MobileMe Replacement

If you have been using MobileMe for webpages, iDisk and some of the
other features that are being curtailed or dropped, there is an
article at MacWorld about a company that is putting together a full
substitute for it you can find it here:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1166565/
macmate_offers_replacement_service_for_mobileme.html

or

http://macw.us/Ic7FoA

I know some have talked about losing their iWeb sites, and asking
about alternatives. Pricing looks good assuming it works well. The
service is in beta, but they want people to know before they start
piecing out their MobileMe stuff.

MacMate
http://www.macmate.me/
$89 for the first 15 months.

Terry, it is good you are looking forward, but they are not going away that fast. Apple may not being installing them in every model, but they are still selling them as a external for the MacBook Air. It just does not fit the design of the MBA, and the low end Mini.

I did a quick search on Amazon, but I don't see what format they are in, so hopefully someone else can answer that question.

I don't know how downloaded movies from Amazon are played, but I have moved some of my movies from disk to a hard drive. These play will DVD Player just like a DVD. Streaming videos I have rented from Netflix play through a browser. Movies I bought through Apple iTunes, play in iTunes.

I hope you have a huge hard drive or RAID if you plan on storing movies that way. I have 117 movies on an external hard drive and they take up almost 800 GB of space. (I used to travel a lot for work.)

BTW, I don't think you are going to find many old movies in downloadable or streaming format. I think you are stuck with buying a DVD for those, since there is just not enough of a market to have them converted.

It is the same with older books, that have not gone to public domain, you just can't find them in downloadable audio format, or CD or cassette. I know there are a couple of books that I would love to "read" again in audio format.

Depends upon your definition of 'old'. I've been able to find most of
Bogart's old stuff online, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, etc. Depends
upon where you look.

Thanks, that's very useful Randy. Are there any decent OCR programs
for a)recent versions of the Mac b) the PC and c) that support right-
to-left languages?

ABBYY FineReader Pro $100
http://www.abbyy.com/FineReader_for_Mac

Note that ABBYY is the best of a field of applications that are not
all that great. OmniPage Pro was by far the best for the Mac, and it
is a shame that it was purchased by Caere/Nuance and then never
updated again. I still maintain a Mac that runs OS X 10.4, in part
because it runs OmniPage Pro perfectly and nothing else can touch
OmniPage Pro.

> b) the PC

I don't use Windows much. There is a version of ABBY FineReader for
Windows, and I can only assume that it is very similar to the Mac
version:
http://finereader.abbyy.com/

Of course, there is still OmniPage for Windows, and that should be at
or near the best OCR product on the market for Windows, even with
right to left languages:
http://www.nuance.com/for-individuals/by-product/omnipage/index.htm

> and c) that support right-
> to-left languages?

The good news is that there is a version of ReadIRIS for the Mac that
will do this:
http://www.irislink.com/c2-1685-189/Readiris-12-for-Mac.aspx

The bad news is that ReadIRIS is generally not a really good product:
http://is.gd/By4ycZ

I don't know of any other OCR products for the Mac that are
specifically designed to be able to do right to left recognition.

Daly, would you click on a tiny URL like this, if it came from a good long time family friend? The source is trustworthy.

this is crazy check this out http://t.co/Hn***7Fh (I changed the link, so it is safe.)

She accidentally forwarded it to 70 close friends. BTW, it is the same link that was sent to me by a spammer.

You don't need to be able to read the whole URL to determine if you want to go there or not. Usually the domain is enough. I generally avoid ones that end with .ru, .cn, or say .me, or snakeoil.co, suckerbait.us, stupidestblog.com, etcetera.

In fact, someone posted a full URL to another yahoo list, yesterday. It included a URL that ended in apple.uk.com, asking if the offer was legit or not. It was a scam site. Apple uses apple.com/uk in the UK.

What is your last sentence in reference to?

There MIGHT be hints, but at least in my experience (I'm NOT a geek) some of the long ones are absolutely incomprehensible, and no better at all than a short one. I depend on the source of t the link for the most part.

It IS possible to verify the tinyURL prior to navigating there, however.

Thanks so much! That was exactly my problem. Curious that Safari handles some .pdf links like this and that other browsers apparently do not.

Thanks to everyone else who suggested other ways to get a hard copy printout as well.

(The ride was beautiful, by the way).
