What I had to do was make certain I had complete contacts on iCloud, then, on my Mac, turn off iCloud, then turn it back on, at which point there was a new synchronization and the "On my Mac" group was no longer present.

Oops, I guess I answered the wrong question (and perhaps incorrectly (the earlier answer was more complete).
In Address Book, on your Mac, you'll see the tab at the top of the left page if you're displaying in two pages. If it shows two heads, click it, and you'll see all your groups. That's where you'll see an "On my Mac" group and an "iCloud" group.

So you're saying it is possibly a holdover from trouble shooting from the code writing, that may or may be not should have been turned off. OK.
How do I delete them?

"Are you taking the mickey" is the British equivalent of the American, "Are you funnin' me?" In other words, to take the mickey is to tease or mock someone, usually (as in Otto's example) gently and with good humour.

No, it is not necessarily gently and with good humour.

iPod Touch and iOS version?
Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com davec2468

My original version iPod Touch has iOS version 2.2.1 installed.
iTunes says this is the "current" (latest?) version.
But:
<http://www.everymac.com/systems/ >apple/ipod/ specs/ipod- touch-specs. html
says that the latest version that this iPod can have installed is
version 3.1.3.
Why won't iTunes update to iOS 3?
Thanks,

Maybe this will explain it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ IPod_touch
I never knew that you had to pay for an upgrade in the software. I doubt that this is available anymore, but even if it was it would be outdated any ways.

There was a time when Apple charged an upgrade fee on the iPod Touch,
but not on the iPhone for the same upgrade. Now it is free for both.
Since you have such an old version, possibly you would have to pay
the fee, but there is a catch-22 of how to do it at this late date.
My suggestion is that if you have an Apple Store handy to you then
make an appointment at the Genius Bar and they might simply update as
far as you can. My iPod Touch is running 5.1, but possibly your older
version (Mine is the 3rd generation) can't go that far.

I see that a payment is required.
And when I click on "Check for update" on my iPod's page in iTunes,
I'm supposed to be taken to the iTunes Store (I presume) to buy the
upgrade.
But instead, all I get is a message that says that iOS 2.2.1 "is the
current version".

Everything I read says that I should be able to upgrade to 3.1.3.
Instructions say that if I click on the "Check for Updates" button in
iTunes' page for my connected iPod Touch, I should see the option to
purchase the update. But all I see is the "Your up to date" message.
Maybe Restoring is the way to go, then try to upgrade to 3.1.3.
If I restore, all data on the iPod is lost, yes? But I can restore
from an iTunes backup?
Thanks,
Dave

While sitting in a local-to-Toronto language school using its WiFi setup, I got a 'warning' that "[another] device on the network [was] using [my] computer's IP address (192.XXX.1.XXX)".
I exed a half-dozen numbers, not that not having done so would have been a biggie. Are IP numbers (supposed to be) a secret?
So, what caused this 'takeover', if that's what it was?
"Try connecting again later. If you continue to have problems, change the IP address of this computer or the IP address of the other device. Contact the network administrator if you need more information."
Even though the WiFi setup had earlier crashed, it was operating okay at the time of the warning. Was this an anomaly?
Thanx. Oneal

Howdy.
A router passes out IP address numbers from a pool of addresses in the
router. This is the case for both wired and WiFi routers.
It wouldn't be unusual at all in a heavy use situation for two devices
to have the same address but it should get resolved automatically.
An inexpensive router will have a pool of perhaps 50 IP addresses to
pass out. A more expensive router, perhaps designed for a larger
business or for more clients, might have a pool of 500 IP addresses to
pass out.
Many WiFi devices are set to receive an IP address automatically from
the router. On your Macintosh this is called DHCP addressing, or also
called "dynamic" addressing. DHCP/dynamic means that your Mac/device
accepts any IP address passed out by the router.
DHCP/dynamic IP addressing means that the IP address your device uses
can change. In a busy WiFi situation this will often be the case. In
a much less busy situation, such as your home, the IP address in use by
your device may not change very often because of few other devices
requesting IP addresses.
When you see an IP address number that starts with 192 (usually
192.168.xxx.xxx) this is a number set reserved for a private network.
A different type of IP address is called a static address where your
computer/device will always have the same IP address. This is done in
the Network panel in System Preferences (see Manually). The address
that is assigned must be one that is part of the pool in the router so
instead of letting it happen automatically you have to check the manual
for the router and make a note of the range of IP addresses in the
pool.
It's possible to have a mix of both manually assigned and dynamically
assigned IP addresses from the same router.

IP addresses are generally public knowledge. The IP address block 192.168.YYY.ZZZ is reserved for private "not routable" address. It only works on the local network side of a router. The Toronto school's router uses 192.168.1.XXX, my router in Hawaii uses 192.168.1.XXX. No conflict, those addresses don't get past the router. On the DSL side of my router the IP address is 72.235.YYY.ZZZ. The router changes 192.168.1.85 [my computer's current IP address] to 72.235.YYY.ZZZ. It also changes my wife's computer IP address of 192.168.1.62 to 72.235.YYY.ZZZ. How the router decides which address to change inbound traffic to is another story, too long for today.
> Even though the WiFi setup had earlier crashed,
A possible scenario for this is:
"Another device" connects to the WiFi network and gets IP address 192.168.1.XXX
"Another device" is idle when the system crashes. It still has 192.168.1.XXX as its IP address
System reboots, address XXX becomes an available address in the routers DHCP address space
You connect to the router and get IP address 192.168.1.XXX
Everything works fine until "Another device" tries to access the internet. Now there is a conflict.
Happens all the time. In System Preferences just "Turn WiFi Off" and then immediately "Turn WiFi On";

Syncing Notes on iPod Touch?
Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com davec2468

I'm trying to sync Notes data on an iPod Touch (first gen) with iOS
3.1.3 so I can install the data on an iPhone 3Gs (iOS 5.0.1).
I've followed these instructions:
<http://support.apple.com/ >kb/HT4191
but when it talks about...
"
If notes are not syncing as expected, check to ensure that the
feature is enabled for that account in Settings > Mail, Contacts,
Calendars > Mail Account.
"
I don't see anything about Notes in that pane.
What am I missing?

Did you get it working?
But my reading of the article you quoted, <http://support.apple.com/ >, says,kb/HT4191
"To sync Notes over the air you need one of the following devices with iOS 4 installed:
iPhone 3GS or later
iPod touch (3rd generation or later)
But you say you have:

It's true. But sync via wifi is not the only option. Via USB is
another, and doesn't seem to have the strict iOS requirements.
But for some reason iTunes un-checks all the "Sync Notes" options I
check, once the syncing begins.
There is another possibility to sync Notes via a mail account, and
I'm currently exploring that avenue.

Not to mention that a physically tethered idevice syncs much faster than
over wifi.
We do both here with our iPod Touches. Just depends upon the
circumstances. For a quick one app sync, wifi is fine.

My iTunes would not open from the dock and could not quit it. I downloaded another copy and when I tried to install it I got an error, 'can't install this version of iTunes, a newer version is already installed.' Since I downloaded from Apple itself I assume that this error is in ERROR!.
Maybe the problem is somehow the recalcitrant existing iTunes. Anyone got any ideas?

iPhone 5 New Tech Touch Screen & Release Date Rumors

Howdy.
Several interesting stories about Apple using a new type of touch
screen color technology for the next generation iPhone screen and
rumors of a fall release date.
The current touch screens use a touch sensitive glass panel with an LCD
screen beneath.
The new touch screen could be "In-Cell Touch" which means that the
touch sensitive part is built into the display color part of the
screen. This could mean a thinner and lighter screen.

It's a good thing I didn't really need iTunes, I only use it to watch TWIT podcast. [This week in tech].
Anyway, iTunes must have been badly locked up. I think I restarted the computer,, and it may not have shut down because it was doing the rotating gear thing '[or whatever you call it]
When I saw that I just shut it down and started up again, and iTunes clicked iTunes and it worked. Weird.
