I have a 4s that behaves just as the 4 did. Charges fully and unless I'm on FaceTime or GPS, etc it lasts all day just checking mail , weather and phone calls. If yours discharges or doesn't fully charge take it back to Apple.

Nope, but it did seem to turn on some battery draining apps that were previously off.

No, within a couple of hours of disconnection.

My 3GS is running iOS 5.1. I haven't noticed any obvious change in battery
life, but one thing that continues to drain the battery quite quickly, even
when I'm not using it, is 3G. I try to keep it OFF whenever I don't
actually need it, but this is a pain because it's 3 levels down in Settings
(unlike Wi-Fi, which is at the top level).

If you turn the iPhone off, you would still see a reduce battery level after several hours. That is the level at which battery technology is currently. If it is on, the drain is greater, and the more power hunger apps you have on will drain it faster.

Without having your iPhone in laboratory conditions with the calibration verified, and a known set of apps installed and running, there is no way to gauge if the discharge you are experiencing is within tolerances, or not.

Here is an app that might help. It allows you to create shortcuts to different things in your settings. Icon Project http://lifehacker.com/5859499/icon-project-creates-quick-ios-home-screen-shortcuts-to-contacts-settings-and-more

I use it on my iPhone and iPad.

Thanks. I'll have a look. It seems obvious to me that you wouldn't want to
use 3G if Wi-Fi is available, and ideally I'd want a simply toggle between
them.

Just wondering what do you all recommend for the best turn by turn
application on the market?

I doubt anyone on the list has tried all of them.

I bought and use TomTom.

I like MapQuest. It's free, and in my experience provides excellent
directions (although that probably depends on where you use it). One
downside is that I don't think you can download maps beforehand, so you
need a network connection.

So besides the GPS running all the time you're using it, the cellular data is running all the time you are using it.

So it really is NOT free, if you want to use it. It's free only if you don't use it.

With the MotionX GPS apps (free or inexpensive) you can download and cache the maps before you leave on a trip. Also, their graphics and user interface are excellent.

Hi,

I don't know how these aps work, but here's my experience...

I've used MapQuest. I've never downloaded any maps; I don't know whether
it's possible or necessary. To my understanding it operates by satellite
and I have to have my 4S on so it uses the battery; I think it uses less
battery when I turn the 4S off but have left the app open. I've never paid
a cent. I have to recharge on long trips. Directions seem pretty good;
maybe not excellent.

I don't know whether it's free or not; my son pays the bill, but he never
mentions a problem.

If I wasn't so happy with MapQuest, I'd probably try Waze. But for now I'm
a very happy camper.

I've used a TomTom GPS, glad that's behind me.

Without a doubt I would recommend MotionX Drive GPS Drive. It is so good that I have stopped using my Garmin. Voice capability usually costs $2.99 a month, but it is on sale for $9.99 a year. By itself the app is cheap. When I visit another state my Garmin would take 15-20 minutes to find a new satellite, while my app is ready to instanly find an address. One can increase the distance to find a restaurant nearby, while my Garmin stopped listing them after a few miles.

Youre probably referring to the Garmin hardware (I have one too - $450! a big waste of money!). I use the Garmin app. Its not perfect, but its pretty good. I find that the iPhone finds the satellites quickly, regardless of which app I use.

The best way is to connect the iPod to the pc then sync. If you only have a few pictures emailing them to yourself is another way . If you have iCloud on both devices that is the best way.
