You might try speaking the business name such as "Airport Club" instead of "gym" & have that business with its' address in your Contacts list.

Actually, that's what I started with. No joy.

Again, what bothers me most about this is the lack of any documentation from Apple regarding just HOW we're supposed to use this feature.

I don't have a 4s but isn't this covered in the manual (which you can
download into iBooks for free)?

Not really. There are examples of location-based reminders in the manual, but none of the "tricks" resorted to by people who've posted to the very long threads on Apple Support groups are mentioned there, nor are there step-by-step instructions for adding locations beyond "work," "home," and "here" (where I am right now as determined by location services) to assist Siri.

So, there are examples that say "when I get to my gym" on Apple's discussions and in Apple support documents, but nothing that tells me how to inform Siri that my gym IS my gym. Sometimes when I tell Siri "remind me to do x when I get to the Airport Club" she'll pop open the Maps application and plop a pin there to tell me she's found it, but I have yet to figure out how to turn that into a reminder without opening the Reminders application myself and doing it without Siri's "help." Other times she'll respond "I can't search near businesses, other times she'll respond "WHEN (emphasis added) would you like me to remind you?" (I've not answered her "It's WHERE, not WHEN," but it actually says in the manual that I could answer this one with "never." I'll try that next time I attempt to set a location based reminder.

Relationships are obviously extraordinarily important in making the location-based reminders work. I can't just say "remind me to get cash when I go to the bank" because there are hundreds of banks in my community (well, dozens, at least). So, I think Apple could make more explicit step-by-step instructions regarding HOW to tell Siri what MY bank, MY grocery store, MY veternarian, etc., are (and I certainly hope the answer isn't to put all those addresses into my "Me" card in Address Book!).

Yep, that's the one, Bekah. The Forbes page had an illustration of a
test result, but it was unclear whether or not it was MY test
result. The Slashgear site actually has a "click here" link to run
the test, and my result was good, so I'm OK. This is getting to be a
PITA, though.

Howdy.

I think there is some significant misinformation going around about
DNSChanger.

DNS Changer seems to have first appeared in 2007.

Here's an article about it with some specific info about this piece of
real malware.

<http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57322316-263/fbi-tackles-dnschanger-malware-scam/>

Here's a paragraph from the article linked to above:

> The Mac variants of the malware, found starting in 2008, were known
> as OSX.RSPlug.A, OSX/Puper, and OSX/Jahlav-C. These have been
> distributed through pornographic Web sites disguised as required

Here's a Forbes update article on DNS Changer:

<http://www.forbes.com/sites/billsinger/2012/04/20/update-first-estonian-arraigned-in-dnschanger-malware-case/>

I have also seen a note (looking for a link) that says that some kind
of threat reduction "service" for this malware "expires" in July 2012.
I'm not sure what this means and perhaps someone can find this
information.

This is a piece of malware that has been around since 2008 but is
gaining new publicity.

No need to panic about this at all but I think more information is
needed on why this is being republicized.

In short, it is possible to have a latent infection that is currently being masked by special servers that were set up long ago to fix this problem. Those servers will shut down in July. IF you are infected, your problem could surface with unpredictable results (most likely, loss of your internet connection). Hence the drive to make sure everyone is clean before the servers are turned off.

Checking is VERY simple and safe. One click...

http://www.dns-ok.us/

It is unlikely you are infected. Think of this like the Y2K bug. Not likely to hurt you but the actual event is unpredictable, so the FBI is trying hard to warn people.

Also the FBI is, not surprisingly, proud of having located and shut down the organization responsible for the malware. They would not want that good publicity undermined by the potential bad publicity when the servers are shutdown and thousands of internet connections "break" all at once!

Cheers,
tod

Howdy.

Ah, now I remember.

I think you can also just look in the Network panel in System
Preferences and go to the DNS tab in the Advanced section. If there
are strange IP addresses present that are listed in the DNS Servers box
ABOVE your normal DNS Server IP addresses then this is an indication of
being infected by this problem.

However, apparently the infection rate for this is very low.

Aw FUD!

That Trojan is 5 years old according to the FBI.

Have you researched this at all? Go to http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/november/malware_110911 to read more. Please note the date.

"11/09/11

Six Estonian nationals have been arrested and charged with running a sophisticated Internet fraud ring that infected millions of computers worldwide with a virus and enabled the thieves to manipulate the multi-billion-dollar Internet advertising industry. Users of infected machines were unaware that their computers had been compromised—or that the malicious software rendered their machines vulnerable to a host of other viruses.

Details of the two-year FBI investigation called Operation Ghost Click were announced today in New York when a federal indictment was unsealed."

<snip>

"Beginning in 2007, the cyber ring used a class of malware called DNSChanger to infect approximately 4 million computers in more than 100 countries. There were about 500,000 infections in the U.S., including computers belonging to individuals, businesses, and government agencies such as NASA. The thieves were able to manipulate Internet advertising to generate at least $14 million in illicit fees. In some cases, the malware had the additional effect of preventing users' anti-virus software and operating systems from updating, thereby exposing infected machines to even more malicious software."

Granted it did have the following update:

"Update on March 12, 2012: To assist victims affected by the DNSChanger malicious software, the FBI obtained a court order authorizing the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) to deploy and maintain temporary clean DNS servers. This solution is temporary, providing additional time for victims to clean affected computers and restore their normal DNS settings. The clean DNS servers will be turned off on July 9, 2012, and computers still impacted by DNSChanger may lose Internet connectivity at that time."

But the FBI article had nothing about it infecting Macs.

Now, have you researched the site that was linked into the Slashgear article, dns-ok.us? Who is VixieFreehold, redbarn.org, Paul, Victoria, Vixie or Vix.com? Why do they live in Woodside, CA and have all their domains hosted on the East Coast? What do they do? They aren't a AV company. They actually don't seem to be a company at all.

So?
If you were infected and did nothing about it, you're still infected, and your internet access will vanish in July when the FBI stops maintaining the servers they took over which are at the other end of the (altered) default DNS addresses in your computer.

Apparently it can infect the Mac OS, according to at least 4 AV companies. I don't know, but I would assume (yes, I know it what it means) that it has been included in Apple's security updates or ProtectX. Apple "tight-lipness" is sometimes a pain, since I can not find it on the Support page.

And in July if they have not taken steps to check for and remove the infection, after 5 years, do you think they deserve internet access. I think of it as culling the herd, natural selection, or putting a little chorine in the gene pool.

Jim, you and I often agree, but we seem to be arguing semantics here. If you don't like FUD, do you prefer sensationalism (with old news) or yellow journalism?

But I did find this, and it's quite helpful in explaining the non-enhanced options.

Thanks for the offer, Alan. Yes, I would be very appreciative if you could send me the script.

I suspect the Leopard and Snow Leopard instructions will be the same. Since we are only talking about file locations, following the Snow Leopard instructions, at worst, will simply not work.

Re: USB Wireless Problem

Since you did not seem to get any replies last time, and the company appears to have closed. Have you looked at the manuals or web sites of other brands of USB WiFi antennas?

I realize it is about a $100 accessory, but they do go bad. Also is the software compatible with your current OS. Since the company closed, and was not sold, there will probably be no software updates, let alone support, as evidenced by the site removal.

Previously I didn't have to enter and confirm a string of numbers, but after my wifi supplier changed the name and WEP address of my router, I always had to fill in those numbers in order for it to connect. At the time of the initial problem, I e-mailed the company several times with no response.

2007 iMac to 2012 iMac

I'm thinking of upgrading my Fall 2007 iMac, with OS 10.6.8, to a new
iMac with OS 7.whatever version of Lion that is.

Is there a site where I can find out which of my apps and such may not
work with Lion?

I haven't paid attention in the recent past because I wasn't planning to
move up soon.
Now I face that possibility and am looking for info.

Many thanks...

Hi Keith,

You can just go to System Profiler, then look at Software:Applications. Look at column Kind - you can sort by that column. Any app that doesn't have Intel or Universal won't work on Lion and you will need to get the newer version to run on your new iMac.

DVD won't work

A few years ago (2007) I created and burned a DVD (using iDVD) on my iMac 24" (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). I don't recall what version OS I would have had on the iMac at that time, but I am currently using 10.6.8.

In the time since, I had a hard drive failure and now have a 1TB HD - not sure if any of this makes any difference.

I recently got the DVD out in preparation for taking it on a trip with me. When I inserted it in my drive to view it, I got this message:

"File Not Writable - an error occurred while loading the project. This project seems to be write-protected and can't be opened."

I went into "get info" and unlocked the file, tried again, and it still will not work.

What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do to view this DVD on my computer?

I forgot to say that when I went into the iDVD program in an attempt to burn another copy, I got this message:

"Project Locked by Other User - The project Suzi's Birthday Cruise 2007 is locked by the user neeliec2000 (user ID 501): 209-10-09 20:03:58 -0700. The project can't be opened at this time."

I did end up creating another "user" folder when I restored all my data from my hard drive fail, but I can still access all my other data that was created under neeliec2000.

I'm baffled.
