Why can't I print this?

I'm planning to push myself on my bike today. Because the climbs and descents are bigger than what I usually attempt, I wanted to print a map. Maps are available on the Santa Rosa Cycling Club's website, but when I select "Print" from the file menu in Safari, both my color inkjet (HP PhotoSmart C309a) and my monochrome laser printer (Xerox Phaser 4400 DT) generate blank pages, as do the "PDF>Save PDF" choices from both print drivers. (This happens from both my Macs running OS X 10.7.3)

I'd be very grateful if one of the gurus here could see what happens with their local printers if they attempt to print this map. You'll find the Santa Rosa Cycling Club's home page at <http://srcc.memberlodge.com/>, and the map in question at <http://srcc.memberlodge.com/resources/Documents/King%20Ridge%20-%20Map.pdf>

Thanks so much in advance. by the way, you don't need actually to waste ink to test this. When my print drivers (in Lion) show the preview of the 2-page document in the print driver, both pages are blank in the preview image.

And, this must be a clue: when I copy the same URL into my Windows 7 VMware Fusion 4.1 VM and ask the inkjet to print the same page from IE 9, it formats it to one page and prints a nice map!

I'm running 10.6.8 and so that might be a difference. Also, I am
running FireFox. I launched Safari, though, and put this URL into it,
as well as into FireFox. The two browsers run things differently.
FireFox downloaded the PDF and, of course, as it was simply a PDF I
am sure I could print it from Preview, as I could any other PDF.
Safari put the map right on the screen, and so I tried to print it
from there onto my Samsung laser printer. It printed fine.

Now you tell me, after I printed it :-) I could have done the
preview, but wanted to make sure.

If you can't fix it some other way then my advice would be a screen
capture (command-$, or command-shift-4) and then print that. However,
it worked fine for me, both in the downloaded PDF that FireFox gave
me and direct from Safari.

This is a PDF file and I ran into the same problem as you did because I did not notice that the PDF program shows options at the bottom of the page. If you chose any other print other than this one, you will get a blank page. Run your curser down to the bottom of the page and see if that does not bring up the option menu. It will fade away if you do not keep it active.

James,

I got the same result you did. Blank!

So I took a couple of screen shots and saved them as .png files and compressed them into one file, and you can download it here, if that helps.

Howdy.

I suspect the Santa Rosa map PDF isn't set by the web designer to show
up on screen in a web browser as it should.

This is not that uncommon but there is an easy workaround. This same
workaround can be used for other file that need to be saved.

The following command works in my SeaMonkey web browser.

Click to display the map pdf.

A blank screen may be the result but there is still a linked PDF file
present.

Use your mouse and pick the File menu (in SeaMonkey in my case) and
then choose Save Page as . . .

You should get a dialog box to save the PDF file to wherever you want
on your Mac. Then open that saved PDF and print it.

The term Save Page As may be different in different web browsers.

I tried this in Safari and was able to see the actual PDF map on screen
BUT choose File menu and Save as resulted in a blank file. So I tried
the commands at bottom of PDF page in Safari and the Save command works
and produces a printable PDF file.

I think this is some odd thing with how the PDF is intended to work for
different web browsers. Interesting.

Wow, I've never noticed that options bar before. not only can you print from it, but you can also save it to a PDF file from a button on the options bar. Very useful!

As far as I can tell, there is no longer an OmniPage for Macintosh being marketed, and I'm reasonably certain that the reason the last Mac version is no longer on my computer is because it didn't work under Lion.

David,

Just my opinion but I can see no reason to upgrade your modem until faster
DSL speeds are available where you are. BT are supposed to be working on
this but I don't know how long it will take to reach you. I would buy a
Wi-Fi router to use *with* the existing modem.

I wish I could recommend a specific product. The Apple AirPorts *are*
expensive but so many others get mixed reviews. Our Belkin 54G has been
excellent, and the best value at the time, but their 11n models don't seem
like obvious "best buys".

Yes, you do have a modem *router*: it might not include an ethernet switch
but it does connect 2 networks, the WAN (internet) and LAN (your private
local network.) A router is a device for connecting 2 networks, but the
term has become confused because "routers" for home use generally include a
switch and Wi-Fi networking along with the router function.

I think that if you get a more modern router you will see improved performance. 8 years old is VERY old in this business.

I personally would not want a combined DSL "modem" and wireless router because if one function fails, it all fails.

I like the Airport Extreme because it is very dependable and very easy to administer.

Randy asked about possible speed increases when using 802.11ac with N or G
devices.

You may see a speed increase by only changing to an 802.11ac router.
First, your old router may not be using MIMO (basically, multiple
antennas). Second, 802.11ac uses a smart array technology to change the
radiation pattern of its antennas to increase the signal strength towards
the other wifi device.

This was also demonstrated at CES.

I just opened Apple's "Refurbished Macs" page in Chrome; print to PDF; Select-All, Copy from within Preview; past into TextEdit. Result -- all text readable.

I guess it depends on the *source*.

Howdy.

Very often you own ISP (Internet Service Provider) will have a web page
that is updated frequently with service problems, slow downs, outages,
and other problems and alerts such as a DOS attack.

My Verizon fiber optic FiOS provider does this (along with other ISPs).

Here's the Verizon page for this info.

<http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/General+Support/Top+Questions/QuestionsOne/130288.htm>

I post the Verizon page here just as an example that may help others
find similar information on their own ISP sites (and not because I
assume that every has Verizon brand service).

For some of these outage information pages, you may have to log in to
your ISP and into your own account with them.

This is a good thing to do occasionally because you can then check
things like the ISP's spam filter (a pre filter that removes spam, or
should, before it gets to your own email program's spam/junk filter.
Some ISPs may leave it to you the customer to turn on this pre
spam/junk filter.

Good idea. I googled "roadrunner network status san diego" and found this page:
<http://help.rr.com/HMSLogic/network_status.aspx>

It's not very detailed, but better than nothing. I'm sure a similar google search would find similar reports for other providers and areas.

Thans, but I was referring to the status of the internet within the US, not the status of my ISP. Is there a site that monitors and displays this information, that we can access?

Daly gave the push in the right direction. I used the search term internet status.

Boy, it must be a bad day for me when I can not spell thanks.

Thanks Dan and Daly

Re: First Gigabit WiFi 802.11ac Router - Netgear

Howdy.

Required updates would indeed be required.

I added the 2nd item of info to indicate that there are the usual
rumors that Apple is doing just this and updating its AirPort/WiFi
technology to 802.11ac.

In the past Apple has been a "First In" maker and has started using
newer and faster WiFi technology even before it was officially
certified as a global standard. This was the case with the 802.11n
WiFi speed which was found in Apple products months before it became
the official standard.

I think the 802.11ac WiFi standard is somewhat the same and is not yet
certified as an official global standard but some companies are jumping
the gun on manufacturing.

For those who want to read a bit more in depth on this technology . . .
. .

Here's a Wikipedia article link on 802.11ac:

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11ac>

For those curious about IEEE, which pops up constantly in computer
tech, networking standards, speed transmission standards, and more,
here's some info for further reading:

IEEE means the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. This
organization says it dates as far back as 1884 and provides important
global standards the makers and users of all kinds of equipment can
rely on in all countries.

Jon,
That is correct, you need to get a real life.

iPod Touch IOS 4.1 Sync

Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@me.com   hflaxman001

Figured I'd ask here prior to calling Apple. I have 2 iPod Touch 4th
gens, one 8gb and one 32gb. For some reason, the 8gb model will
automatically sync new apps from iTunes, even though the option is
unchecked. This becomes a nuisance considering this smaller model fills
up pretty quickly.

Neither iPod has the option to sync new apps checked, and regardless of
whether both are 'seen' by iTunes or just the 8gb, the 8gb always gets
new apps sent to it whether or not I want them or not.

Is there some other setting, perhaps in iOS that would control this
behavior?

TIA

Harry

Should have been iOS 5.1! Changed the subject tag.

If you're on iCloud, check Settings -- Store

In General Settings do you have iTunes wifi synch turned on?

Sent from my iPhone
