As to exactly what or why, I can not say, but the iOS needs the support of iTunes to do what it does.

You will find that you may not be able to update the iOS without updating iTunes first, until you reach the level where you can update iOS over the air, which I think is about iOS 5.0. You may still find that you need to update iTunes to make use of some of the features.

You can try to update the iOS without updating iTunes, but my bet is you will get a dialog box saying you have to update iTunes.

Note, I come from the Mac side, but the software for you and me comes from Apple.

been holding off on the iOS upgrade but i'm now ready to do the upgrade.

questions:
- do i *need* to upgrade iTunes before the iPhone upgrade or does one have
nothing to do with the other?
- will the iTunes upgrade run and play nice with Windows XP?

This is not the original article that I saw on this, just the first one that I pulled up. I hope our good neighbor, Canada will join in on this. I would hope Mexico would also join in, but they have bigger problems that stolen cellphones. It would be nice if this were global.

http://phys.org/news/2012-04-wireless-disable-stolen.html

In April, Federal Communications Commission (US) announced that "the four leading carriers had agreed to set up their own databases of stolen phones within six months."

"The system announced Tuesday relies on a centralized database that officials hope to be operating within six months. The database will record smartphones' unique identifying numbers. That way, wireless carriers that receive a report of a stolen smartphone will be able to recognize the device and block it from being used again."

"Cellphone carriers covering roughly 90 percent of U.S. subscribers are participating, the FCC said."

Try downloading to iPad Overdrive application directly rather than transferring from the Mac.

Problem two is that you are getting that error message, which comes up when ever you make a big change to what you are syncing, or are running out of space. And possibly the publisher has placed a restriction on the license with Overdrive. One of my favorite authors will not allow any of his work be played on an iPod, iPad or iPhone. Go back and check at the library site and double check that for the specific book you are having problems with. I doubt this is the case since you got it into iTunes and iBooks will not work on a Mac.

Overdrive says it needs "OverDrive Media Console.app" which is an iMac application.

I tried downloading to the iPad and so far I haven't found anything I want to read. Apparently the iPad and the iMac use a different library.

I'll keep trying.
