Thanks Fred. I'm not by my iPad right now, but I'll give it a try later.

Sticky track bar button workaround?

Posted by: "Biglt" eltay3@yahoo.com   eltay3

Wed Jun 6, 2012 8:32 am (PDT)

I have a PowerBook G4, with a with a track bar button (sorry, I'm sure there is a more accurate description for what replaces the mouse button, I just can't remember it) that is intermittently fluky. I realize that I will ultimately - and metaphorically - need to take a rock and pound the cover off it to exorcise it's demons. In the meantime, is there some "keystroke" workaround? Something that will replace the function another way. I have a mouse on the way that should do the job, but that is just one more thing to carry.

Thanks,

Are you saying the button is broken? What function are you trying to replace?

i am NOT sure it is possible to go from a 2011 iMac with Lion pre-installed back to SL.
please call apple and/or someone and ask before you go much further.

Keith, I just talked to OWC. you CAN go back to SL even if your machine came with Lion installed on it.
BUT, that will void your warranty. i guess that's the breaks. it seems worth it to me.
i don't think my machine will have it's warranty (extended 3 year) voided because it came with SL.
i hope this helps.
good luck.

The only iMacs SOLD new with Lion were the LATE 2011 models.
The MID 2011 iMacs were all factory-delivered with Snow Leopard.
This refurb clearly had Lion installed later.

I would check with Apple, not with OWC.
("Hey, Apple: I have an iMac12,1 [or iMac 12,2] that I bought from you refurbished. You sold it with Lion, but I understand these came originally with Snow Leopard. Is there any problem if I choose to re-install Snow Leopard on it?")

Both the Mid 2011 21.5" and the Mid 2011 27" iMacs were sold with Snow Leopard. Obviously, Apple installed Lion on this one during the refurbishment process.

There is no logical reason why the warranty on a stock Mid 2011 iMac that came originally with SL should have that warranty voided by re-installing SL.

If it were a LATE 2011 iMac, ALL of which came with Lion, then I could understand the warranty issue.

The answer is that yes it is quite possible to reinstall SL on that
model of iMac
but it's not simple. You need to have the Snow Leopard install disc but
even that is
not simple. I went through the process for my early 2011 Macbook Pro
which I installed
an SSD and 8GBytes of memory. The version of SL on my install disk is
10.6.3, which will
not boot on that hardware.....so instead I used another Mac to do the
installation in target
mode over FW800. This was into a secondary partition on the SSD. After
the install, it will
still not boot until one applies the 10.6.8 combo update again in target
mode. If you don't
feel comfortable with that level of tinkering, you might be able to find
somebody who will
do it for you. Your alternative is to see if you can find a 10.6.8
installation disk either for
sale or for download. Using that would make the process much more
straightforward.
Good luck.

But in that case I doubt that 10.6 would even install (or, if you were able
to do that), run.

I've now tested changing the Stop Time in a film/movie (actually I tried
2), a video podcast, and a YouTube download. In *all* cases the change
worked and playing stopped at the time I had set. It's worth mentioning,
though, that the remaining time shown in the iTunes top bar does not
reflect the changed stop time: it is still based on the original time.

I suppose that not many people are very interested in this. UntiI now I
have only ever changed the Stop Time when creating ringtones for my iPhone.

So, if there's a bug, I don't have it!

small Firewire network - other ideas?

In my 17 years of Mac use, I had never networked two Macs together until last night, when I connected a simple Firewire cord to my old 2007 iMac and my new Mac Mini - I was easily able to transfer old files to the new machine and started to wonder if there was anything else I could do with this arrangement? My old iMac still works fine, but I plan to use it only as an extra hard drive. BUT is there any other way to use this small two Mac network? - - thanks!

What are the sizes of the 2 internal drives?

Yes. This is off-topic.

There are many MC forums/groups/lists where this can be continued.
