one of the greatest complaints I have is that the Central Point Software
knockoff called Directory Opus. This is the best thing since apple pie but
sadly, has not been ported to the MAC. BUT, if you ever go to a Doze machine
for your ham radio digital software, get this program!

to answer your question, just use the Finder application. it is free, comes
with the OS and does most things relatively well.

I use cmd-option-v to move files that I've copied using cmd-c between Finder windows/folders.

Howdy.

Charles, what do you mean by a file manager?

The entire Finder is a file manager, of course, but that doesn't seem
to be what you are aiming for.

Are you looking for something to automate routine tasks?

Howdy.

I use Dropbox and I drag n drop files all the time from any Finder
window to the folder on Dropbox I want the files to be in. Zero
problem. Dropbox then takes over and uploads the files to my cloud
account on Dropbox and I check the progress via the Dropbox Menu bar
icon/menu.

That may be part of what I need to do. I shudder at the notion of getting someone at Comcast to do anything beyond implementing canned scripts, however. It took them two or three visits to get my home telephone, wired internet, and television service implemented. It took another 2 or 3 visits for them to program the "CableCards" in my TiVo.

Since it sounds as though you may have responded to Comcast's offer of a "free" service upgrade, may I ask if that all by itself enhanced your internet experience?

Your post led me to a Google search for your cable interface, and THAT eliminated (I think) one of my own misperceptions; namely, that a WiFi access point will have antennas protruding from it. The pdf that I found that describes your interface box's feature set shows a few pictures of it: no protruding antennas (of course, Apple's WiFi access points have none, either, so my preconceived notion was baseless even before I looked up your device).

Looking at the specs of your box listed by its manufacturer did surprise me a bit. Among 3 pages full of images, text, and protocol acronyms, nowhere can one find the characters 802.11 (followed by b, g, n, or ac). I'm guessing, but have no reason to have confidence in this inference, that the model number could be decoded to mean

smc "Cable" "Docsis3" "802.11g and n" "voice"

I've been away from home for the weekend; my family know better than to dive behind my desk. When I get home tonight I'll take the "deep dive" back there, try to decipher whatever identifying information I can find on my cable box, and also try to wrest my Airport Extreme Base Station from the rats nest to lessen the likelihood of rf interference with its signals. My uninformed speculation is that rf interference is NOT what causes my periodic problem with WiFi transmissions, because my "vipers nest" doesn't change (it may LOOK like a den of snakes, but they're not capable of movement!).

Using www.speedtest.net on my Macs, my download speed measurement went from about 25Mbps to 55Mbps & upload speed from about 6Mbps to 12Mbps. I've enjoyed comparable speed increases on my iDevices as well.

Thanks for that. Guess I have some work to do.

Do you get voice service from Comcast? If so, did they require you to pay for battery backup for your access device (which is buried inside my current device)?

Thanks again,

Thanks Brent, that's a good plan. I have to say that getting help from Bell is problematical. I didn't know when I switched providers that Bell is obstinately pro-Microsoft; coupled to worse customer service than any I can think of this becomes a serious challenge for a dedicated Mac user. I know I can have Mail back in control, it worked for a few days when first I switched. Once I signed in to Outlook, however, net mail became my only path. I do not have any version of Outlook installed on my iMac. It seems that, like Facebook, once you are into Outlook there is no way out. (Ooh, that's too many "ins and outs" but I can't think of a better way to phrase it.)

I don't use bell.net and that is the reason I got an error message since it could not find my account on their servers.

Yes, Charles, Little Snitch just might help him. As a side point, I tried
Little Snitch about a year ago because conceptually I like the idea of
monitoring outward connections to the internet. In practice, though, I got
tired of answering its constant requests for clearance. I got rid of it --
it just wasn't for me.....Jim

I am older and have great difficulty understanding people on the phone especially females. I never answer the phone these days - my wife does but is a computer phobe. We get about 20 calls a day and only about two of those are not junk calls. We have registered with do not call and have blocked many numbers. Few weeks ago we were getting a call from some organization every ten minutes for some hours - number had been blocked but it rings once. For me now a telephone has lost its utility - I keep it as many organizations seem to need a phone number. We do not own a smart phone and have no desire for one. Carry a cell phone but mostly for emergencies and communicating with my wife when shopping.

Google blacklisted my account because of messages being sent. I reset my password and my gmail account works. However Yahoo groups server still has me blacklisted I guess. I receive posts from groups using my gmail address but cannot post there from my mail program using that email address. I still have the gmail address listed in the group membership as my primary and can post to the site from the web page.

I am no way a computer expert but have had to use computers for communications since the late 60's or early 70's. Initially to instruments used in my work and later in communication with others. For many years had a dumb terminal linked to a corporate mainframe. At one time we had 11 incompatible e mail programs - the unix based one was the only universal. In printing a document had access to over 1500 printers in offices in a number of cities in the US and Europe. Security was always an issue and obviously still is. Phone and net security has now become a central issue in national discussion in the US and likely elsewhere.

He means an app that safely keeps your passwords for you, encrypted and password protected. Some versions offer other services like syncing between other devices you own, or to an encrypted cloud. (I do not suggest ever storing your personal and confidential information on someone else's cloud or server.)

Examples of a password manager would be 1Password, Passwords Plus, Callpod's Keeper.

I am using icloud for my iPhone4 and iMac to sync.

Is it best to enter new data on the icloud rather than the iMac? Data doesn't seem to update to the cloud/iphone if I enter it on the iMac address book.

What causes address cards to duplicate?

Thanks.

Most commonly, sync'ing by more than one method -- iTunes and iCloud, for example.
