DoNotTrack+

Posted by: "Dave Clark" dc1999@gmail.com   dave24c

Mon Mar 5, 2012 7:15 am (PST)

I've had installed in my Firefox browser on this MacBookPro DoNotTrack+ from http://abine.com (free, so far) for a couple of weeks, and it reports that I've blocked 11,794 cookies, tracking and such from advertisers and websites I visit. Have no idea if that's accurate, or even how to check the number, but going to try to find out. As near as I can tell, there's no effect on my browser's capability, and no websites have told me to disable "blocker" software.

DoNotTrack+ notes what company is tracking you, and it even sets forth that there is NO tracking. I went to the LA Superior Court and CA Secretary of State sites, and each were reported that NO tracking was going on. But, the CA State Bar website showed Google Analytics was tracking, and it had been blocked. When I went to the USPS site for zip codes, DoNotTrack+ showed that an entity named "Webtrends" was tracking me, but it also had been blocked.

Just my $2 worth. YMMV

blocked domain?

Today when I tried to go to Amazon, I got a page with this message:

Sorry, but www.amazon.com is blocked on this network.
This site was categorized in: Ecommerce/Shopping

Contact your network administrator

If I click on the link, it opens a page with a form to put in my
email address, name,

and a message, which it says will go to my network administrator.

Other URLs work fine. I haven't changed anything, except for adding
duckduckgo

to my bookmark bar. I use Camino, but the same thing happens in Safari.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Contact your network admin directly if you have one. Don't use the form. If you are working over a corporate or business network, it would not surprise me at all that Amazon is blocked.

If this is your personal network, that's odd.

Quality firewire expansion card

Posted by: "martin trotter" ha4mnu@googlemail.com   trott3r

Hello,

I have received my external optical drive enclosure and tested it on my
mac. I would now like a firewire card for my PC.

Having read the firewire wiki page it seems to suggest that firewires
performanceis very much dependent on the quality of the chipset on the
card.

Have people on here had this experience themselves of variable
performance dependent on the quality of their firewire card?

Any recommendation as to which chipset to look out for or brand of
firewire card for a PCI slot or PCI express x1 slot in a PC?

Even ones to avoid will be helpful.

thanks for your time

Martin

Not so much anymore. There were issues of quality, but FW cards are old technology and it hasn't changed in years. Any reputable card will do. Even in the past, the biggest issue was the chipset used in the external drive enclosure, not the system controller card.

Oxford chipsets are the standard with "Oxford 946" the latest (?). Sonnet has historically been the go to manufacturer for FW cards, but there are plenty of perfectly good cards out there. Anything that has a good reputation should be fine. Look for the feature set you want (port combination, USB, eSata, whatever).

Unless you are using other FW devices that have high bandwidth requirements (A/V devices) or you want to connect a lot of drives, you should not need a additional controller card. Your Mac's internal bus is fine for 3-4 drives in a chain if you are not a video editor.

Lo,

Thanks for the information I am having trouble locating anything that
isnt a VIA chipset.
I have not found any oxford chipset in the UK so far.

I have found dynamode and startech brands but still VIA chipsets.

The Mac has an onboard firewire port so i was looking for one for the PC box.
USB2 doesnt burn a DVD at 16x so i was hoping firewire would.

I am curious why you would ask a Mac support group for advice about a PC expansion card.

Because firewire was more popular on Apple Mac computers and not on PCs.

I have a mac mini which the enclosure works on the firewire port and i
would like to use it on the PC box.

My girl and I bought a FW card for her pc years ago. I don't know what the brand was, but I can dig it up and have a look see.

I do know that it was Firewire 400, had 4 ports, and served it's purpose well.

Give me a bit, and I'll see if I can find it.

Are you trying this at work or on a personal home or cellular network? As previous poster mentioned, a lot of work sites are blocking sites which they don't believe their employees need for official business.

I noticed that your block message specifically states that the site is "categorized" as "e-commerce." This suggests you are being blocked by the owner of the network.

Intel Xeon E5 Processors - New MacPro Soon?

Posted by: "Denver Dan" denver.dan@verizon.net   denverdan22180

Mon Mar 5, 2012 8:15 am (PST)

Howdy.

Articles have appeared in multiple places about the release next week
of the new Intel Xeon E5 processor.

Here's one from Electronista:

<http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/03/01/intel.xeon.e5.ready.to.go/>

This chip has been shipping to computer makers for some weeks now and
the speculation is that the official release of the new processor will
be paralleled by the release of new work stations including a new and
faster MacPro tower.

Speculation concerning the Mac Pro have been rampant lately. One of the
more popular rumors is that the model will be discontinued entirely.
This seems to make sense being as the iMac line is now in the powerhouse
category.

We shall see.

The Mac Pro is a staple of the professional media community and cannot be replaced by iMacs. I have seen no rational argument for "pulling" the Mac Pro that takes this very large and influential part of the Mac community into account.

I do not expect significant redesign or upgrades other than simple processor and port changes. The Mac Pro is the pinnacle of the tower PC. There is nowhere to go. The Mac Pro will fade away over the next few years, but until they pack the equivalent of an eight-core Mac Pro into a Mini or iMac, Apple will not remove it from their line.

Mac Pro is not long for this world, but it will last another year at least.

Those of us that currently use and need MacPros will not be purchasing iMacs. I for one and probably most others will be buying or building hackintosh boxes first.

If Apple does not want to sell top of the line hardware that for our needs it will be their loss, as I am sure millions of hackintosh boxes will replace them.

Here are some links that discuss the impending demise of the Mac Pro:

http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-11-01/tech/30344726_1_mac-pro-apple-laptops-laptops-account

http://www.businessweek.com/technology/apples-mac-pro-may-be-fading-away-11012011.html

http://www.ign.com/articles/2011/11/01/report-apple-to-discontinue-mac-pro-desktops

These are but a few. Of course, there are discussions on both sides of
the rumor mill. That's only natural when it comes to Apple.

I had a PowerMac G5 way back when. I did enjoy the tower and
expandability of the machine as well as the processing power, but moved
away from it several months after the introduction of Intel Macs.

I think that a high-end iMac would suit my purposes now.

Howdy.

Yes, lots of speculation on MacPro tower line being discontinued.

However, the iMac is just simply not a "powerhouse" when compared with
the more powerful Xeon line of server class processors, the ability to
have quad, hex, dual hex, and dual quad processors, along with
expansion slots for things like eSATA cards and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
monitors, along with higher end ports for audio and video, as well as
two internal optical drives and 4 internal HDs, and a lot of RAM.

Let's hope the tower doesn't go away. I'm in the market for the new
one right now.

I doubt that the people who need Mac Pros to do their work would want a Mac that didn't allow the swap-out/addition of components such as disc drives, HDs, SSDs, sound cards, video cards, port cards, etc. I just can't see Apple abandoning high-end, professional users.

I have a similar setup. The only method I've found is cabling them
directly to the main unit, in my case, my MBP.
