A trip to the Apple Store led initially to a step in the wrong direction, but then a bit of Googling led me to a simple solution, referred to HERE: <http://support.apple.com/ >kb/TS3998
Quite simple, really:
Open System Prefs: iCloud.
Unclick Contacts, and choose Delete "From my Mac"
Click "Contacts again in System Prefs:iCloud.
Select "Merge"
This deleted the previously non-deletable "On My Mac" group. However, it left a ghost of itself in iCloud, which I had open on both my Macs. There were duplicates of all "birthdays" entries in iCal, with one member of each pair containing no person's name! Quitting and re-launching iCal resolved that oddity.

Hi Dan,
Concept sounded nice but it requires all the people you invite to see an album to become a member. They say this is the way it restricts access, instead of a password and a link. This seem pretty burdensome to the people I have in mind to share albums with (parents and other non technological family) - I don't think this will be that friendly for them.
I guess I have to hope that Apple brings the Gallery functionality to iCloud at some point.

Howdy.
Thanks for following up on this. I uploaded two pix as an experiment
but had not read the part the a viewer would have to become a member to
see an album. That seems to be a problem also to me.
MobileMe Albums were REALLY convenient to do via iPhoto and I used them
for a big family set of albums for my extended family.

I sent an invite to the album to another e-mail address I had to check out how the restriction are set. I was actually trying to figure out how to designate someone a Contributor who can both view and upload pictures to a restricted album. When I clicked the link to the restricted album, it required me to sign up. I think you can see an album without signing in if it is an open album but then it works like Picasa.

resetting pram
Posted by: "Jene" jene42@yahoo.com jene42
Thu Apr 5, 2012 9:26 am (PDT)
my machine 2.93 Ghz quad core intel, 8gb memory, osx 10.6.8 doesn't have a start up chime anymore.
i've repaired permissions on all hds
verified hds
run onyx on full maintenance a number of times
run disk warrior
zapped pram waiting the required of chimes (2) or more
and still nothing works on start up, no chime.
i've even run fsck -y on terminal and disk is fine.
does anyone have additional suggestions or point me in the right direction as to how to fix this problem, or how bad is this pram problem?
thank you

Howdy.
Jene, browse to the Apple support site and look up the command for your
specific model Macintosh to Reset the SMC.
The SMC means the System Management Controller. The procedure to do
this reset can vary a bit between different Mac models. It usually
involves shutting things down, unplugging power cord for a certain
period of time, then doing a restart, or perhaps pressing a button
while unplugged.
The SMC manages a lot of things that have to do with sleep, power use,
energy saving, booting, batteries and charging, and more.
You may see a reference to a Reset of the PMU. PMU means Power
Management Unit and is the same feature but for older PowerPC processor
based Macs. SMC is for Intel based Macs.
The startup chime is sometimes called the "post" chime. Post is
actually POST or Power On Self Test. The Mac chime is a report that
several things are all OK.
If your Mac is booting, if it is working after booting, if applications
are launching, network is working, things aren't crashing, not getting
kernel panic crashes, then I suspect something is wrong in the hardware
area such as a failed speaker, a disconnected speaker, or perhaps
something like external speakers connected but not properly or an
incorrect setting in your System Preferences > Sound panel for sound
output.
Here is a link to a Wikipedia article on POST with info on Intel,
Macintosh, Amiga, and more.
If the POST finds a problem, you might hear one or more beep sounds as
follows. However, if your sound isn't working for a setting or
hardware problem then, of course, your Mac might not be able to make
these sounds.
Beeps made after failed POST check:
1 beep = No RAM installed
2 beeps = Incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = No good banks
4 beeps = No good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config
block)
5 beeps = Processor is not usable
Good luck on running down the problem!

Does it work properly in all other respects? Do you get sound
otherwise? 10-12 or so years ago I had a beige G3 that was that way,
but in its case it was because it was hooked up to an AV monitor, and
the monitor would not activate until it got a signal from the
computer, so I never go the sound. Is yours hooked up to an external
speaker of some sort, such as my old AV monitor? If so then unplug it
and see if the internal speakers, if you have them in your machine,
will sound the chime.

Two questions?
Does it function properly other than no start up chime? Your "nothing works on start up" is not as clear as you might think. Do you still have other sound functions?
What model of Mac as it does narrow the issue down?
I assume that it is a MacBook Pro since there appears only to be 2 Macs that run at 2.93 Ghz, late 2008 & early 2009 MBPs. MBPs have a known issue with the logic and graphics boards. If it is still under AppleCare it is a free repair. If not it cost me $310 flat fee for the repair on my early 2008 MBP.
Dan, thank you for the list of beeps. I have been looking for that.

Lost Sound Control
Posted by: "Rob Frankel" rob@robfrankel.com robfrankeldotcom

All of a sudden, the Sound Output controls on my MBP (10.6.8) simply
don't work. The output levels are stuck at a middle range,
regardless of my setting. I tried resetting them in the Sound Pref
panel in System Prefs, but that didn't work.
It's probably a damaged file/setting, but does anyone know where a
.plist type file for that sound manager resides?
Thanks,

Do you mean in *folders*?
To select a consecutive list, click on the first, then shift-click on the
last, but shift-down arrow also works for me.
To select a number that are not consecutive, command-click each one.

To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More.

Then, when I click Tell Me More, I'm sent to http://support.apple.com/ and then it seems I must go to http://www.telestrekb/HT3526 am.net/flip4mac- but to download what I need costs money. Is this the only way I can get .wmv files to open?wmv/overview. htm

This has cropped up here many times. You just need the trial version, which
includes the free player. You don't need to pay anything unless you want
the other features.

Thunderbolt eSATA hub from LaCie

Howdy.
Some of us here are posting news of new Thunderbolt products.
LaCie announced a Thunderbolt eSATA hub in January and says it is now
available to purchase.
<http://www.lacie.com/us/products/ >product.htm? id=10574
Price is $199.00 USD.
As I understand this hub, you connect the Thunderbolt eSATA hub to your
Mac via a Thunderbolt cable. You can then connect two eSATA drive
devices to the hub. For example, two external drives or drive docks
equipped with eSATA ports.
The blurb says that up to 12 drives could be connected but on a
preliminary read through I don't know what this requires. eSATA with
some kind of port multiplier available???
I'd ask for some detailed specifics on cables, port multiplier, etc.,
before buying this device.

Unfortunately, they apparently have chosen to limit the capabilities by using a SATA-2 interface rather than a SATA-3:

Recent Malware Threats; What To Do

There is a new Trojan Horse going around that is quite nasty, called
Flashback.
Article: Mac Flashback Trojan: Find Out If You're One of the 600,000
Infected
<http://gizmodo.com/5899352/ mac-flashback- trojan-find- out-if-youre-
one-of-the-600000-infected>
This article will tell you how to find out if you are already
infected by the Flashback Trojan, and it tells where to go to find
instructions on how to eliminate this malware if you are.
(Don't be too upset by the title of that article. I've yet to hear a
single firsthand account of someone being infected by Flashback.)
Apple has already pushed out an update to Java that includes a patch
to make your Mac immune to Flashback.
Once you either find out that you aren't infected with Flashback, or
you find out that you are infected with Flashback and you eliminate
it, it would be a very good idea to go ahead and update Java to
acquire immunity to Flashback.
<http://support.apple.com/ >kb/HT5228? viewlocale= en_US&locale= en_US
Java, by the way, is a programming language that is used for
applications and advanced features on Web sites. It's use has become
very rare. If you think that it is unlikely that you even have a need
for Java, it is possible to completely disable Java so that it can be

There is another Trojan Horse going around that is carried via a
Microsoft Office document. Don't confuse this with the Flashback
Trojan. Apple has already pushed out a security update to protect you
against this Trojan also.
Apple updated XProtect with a definition to
catch the Office vulnerability. They refer to it as "OSX/Mdropper.i."
You should run Software Update on your Mac and install all security
updates.
In addition, if you have Microsoft Office installed, it's a good idea
to install the Microsoft updaters for Office. These include a patch
against this Trojan also:

Apple has made yet another Java update available today to combat the
Flashback Trojan.
It is recommended that you also install this one. It is available
via Software Update:

If you came up clean on the test from the prior post and have had Java disabled for some time - is this necessary?

I read a lot - a LOT! - and the sites I come up with which have what I believe to be virus issues are usually associated with whole texts of copyrighted materials available for free download. I've come across two in the last week or so. The first one was just suddenly super huge screen and some crap with it - I just force quit Safari.
BUT! Today I came across one for the full text of "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brian. (I have the Kindle version - I was looking for something else.) This time the screen said it needed some java setting. Ummm.... heh.... I may have come across a source for the Flashback Trojan?
If you want to see it google "The Things They Carried" and click on the link (down the first page a bit) which says "full online text" and from "rajuabaju.com" . I think you ought not go there if you're unsure about your java settings - it might automatically send you something - I don't know . I clicked the Google link and *I think* I got that message because my java is disabled.
