Necessary? No.
But updating to the latest version of Java is added protection at no
cost to you, with little effort necessary. Having done so will come
in handy if you ever find yourself needing to use Java. On a Web
site, perhaps.

I don't know about you, but sometimes I forget and turn things back on, forgetting why I turned them off.
I figured that I have not consciously run Java, so I disabled it, only to find out that my password safe software runs on Java.
Install the update, just in case you forget.

Hi Randy,
I followed the instructions from your earlier message and found the machine to be clean. I then went to software updates, (this was about 4:00 PM EDT April 6) and Apple announced that there were 4 updates which have now been installed. I assume, based on time and date, that I will have received the latest as well as the earlier update. Following the terminal instructions was really easy using cut/paste to avoid having to type unfamiliar commands.
Thanks from me, too, for all your help.

Hello Randy.
First let me say that I DO NOT understand Java - what it is, how it works, or where to find "it" on my computer.
I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 24" (2007) iMac. I didn't get the Java update via my Software Update. I've checked twice today and there is nothing there. Would that be because I'm still using Snow Leopard and NOT Lion?
I did download and install a couple updates yesterday, including one for Java. How can I tell if I do have the most current update - the one you are mentioning in your post?
Thanks.

At this point I've heard from hundreds of users who have checked
their machines, and not a single one of them has been infected by
Flashback.
Some research turns up speculation that the original claim that
600,000 machines have been infected might include other operating
systems, and an unknown number of Macs. It may be that next to no
one in the U.S. has been infected.

10.7 ships without a Java engine installed. 10.6 comes with a Java engine installed. See Apple's support downloads area for the 10.6 patch.

Java is a programing language that can run inside most Operating Systems.
I, too, wondered how to turn it off, as it is not as obvious as some think. Go to your Utilities folder and open Java Preferences.app. If you uncheck any of the boxes, it should disable Java.
Javascript is different, but I don't understand how.
On another list someone said that only one of the updates for Java was available for 10.6, but I don't know for sure.

Interesting idea. I'm sitting right now at a Mac running Tiger. I
went to Java Preferences and opened it. There were lots of boxes,
but unfortunately none of them had anything to do with turning Java
completely off.

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with Java.

Today's update is for Lion only.

I don't know how it looks in Tiger, Randy, but in Lion, the left-most tab in Java Preferences is "General" and brings up a window listing, in my case, the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Java SE 6 (version 1.6.0_31-b04-414), each with a check-box to its left.
As far as I can tell, un-checking the checkbox seems to turn Java off.

Resetting startup disk
Posted by: "Andrew Buc" andrewbuc@staxman.net andrewbuc
Fri Apr 6, 2012 2:30 pm (PDT)
For the last few years I've been making periodic bootable clones of
my hard drive, using SuperDuper. SD users will know that when SD has
made a clone, it resets the startup disk to the (presumably) external
drive used for the clone and restarts. The user can then log back on
to confirm that the clone is bootable.
Today when I made the clone, I logged back in and used About This Mac
to confirm that the system had in fact booted from the external
drive, and i found that it had booted from the internal HD. I tried
setting the startup disk to the external in System Preferences, and
it seemed that I'd successfully done so. But when I restarted the
system, it was still booting from the HD. From what I can see, the
data were copied to the external just fine. I realize that in a
pinch, I could boot from the OS X DVD and restore from the external,
but that defeats the purpose of a bootable clone.
I can't think of anything I've done to cause this. I've been making
weekly clones to the current external drive for 4 months, and this
has never happened. I'm on OS X 10.4.11. Any thoughts? Thanks.

SD users will actually know that it does that only if that is how you have changed the default settings. On my system, it doesn't.

Have you tried re-booting with the <Option> key held down?

If that's true, then I must have changed the default settngs when I
installed SD, because it's been behaving the way I wanted it to,

That means the computer is not seeing any other bootable drive.
Either the connection to the external drive has become flaky, or the drive is somehow NOT bootable.

I just spoke to Other World Computing, where I bought the drive, and
the support guy raised the possibility that the cable had become
flaky. I don't have a suitable spare cable, so I'm going to get one
and see how it goes.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner, which does not do that, but I do manually
go to the preference pane and reset to the new clone and then boot
from it so I know it is good.

In other words, you performed the test that you should do and which I
always do, and it failed. Something was wrong with the clone. Maybe
the best thing would be to make another clone, onto another volume,
if you have one, and start from a newly-formatted disk

There are two possible problems, and I'm not sure which you have. If
the new clone shows up on your desktop and can be read then the drive
itself is good, and so is the cable. If it does not show up on the
desktop but DOES show up in Disk Utility then it might be good. See
if you can mount it through Disk Utility, or if you cannot see if you
can reformat it.
If it shows up on the desktop then the hardware is all fine, and for
some reason you fouled up the clone so it won't boot. The
option-key-boot shows only bootable volumes, so if this is not
bootable, even if it is a good disk, it won't show up there.

Are you installing the updates in order? I believe that you have to
start with the oldest update that you never installed, and they you
have to work your way to the most recent one. (Check to see if any
of the updates say that they are a "combined updater.")

Hi Randy:
Thanks for your help. That did not work either. But on the Microsoft site, at the bottom, there is a way to update by going into an Office program (Word or Excel) and going into Help and clicking on update. That worked.

thanks dan
as usual a complete analysis of pram problems, thank you.
just to clarify it's a power tower pro 2.93 which i bought from apple as a reconditioned, years ago.
the sound pref never worked right which i found out a year or so later after i got external speakers. i
posted on apple support boards and no one had a solution. other than when i start up i need to turn on
sound prefs to external. pia yes. but better than sending it in for repair and cheaper.
what's started to happen are browser problems forgetting downloads that i've got to hunt for in docs and
other odd things i can't recall right now.
i'll check out POST but i've done the sum check by pulling power cord and hitting start button.
this computer has had problems from the factory that should have been addressed years ago, oh well
as for apps running i am testing photoshop beta 6 now but find odd behavior on computer. yes i go in
and delete phis prefs just to keep things clean.
i know my computer speakers work because when i zap pram i hear the single chime coming through them.
i am concerned because i wonder if apple might discontinue this tower model for a more consumer model
and people like me will be left hanging. to be truthful i thought this might be my last computer from a long
line starting with my Cill
jene
--------------------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -
The startup chime is sometimes called the "post" chime. Post is
actually POST or Power On Self Test. The Mac chime is a report that
several things are all OK.
If your Mac is booting, if it is working after booting, if applications
are launching, network is working, things aren't crashing, not getting
kernel panic crashes, then I suspect something is wrong in the hardware
area such as a failed speaker, a disconnected speaker, or perhaps
something like external speakers connected but not properly or an
incorrect setting in your System Preferences > Sound panel for sound
output.
Here is a link to a Wikipedia article on POST with info on Intel,
Macintosh, Amiga, and more.
If the POST finds a problem, you might hear one or more beep sounds as
follows. However, if your sound isn't working for a setting or
hardware problem then, of course, your Mac might not be able to make
these sounds.
Beeps made after failed POST check:
1 beep = No RAM installed
2 beeps = Incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = No good banks
4 beeps = No good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config
block)
5 beeps = Processor is not usable
Good luck on running down the problem!

Building Mail Templates?

Fri Apr 6, 2012 6:31 pm (PDT)
I mentioned this in another thread but I figured it deserved to be asked properly. Thanks to Randy for trying to answer my unformed question earlier.
I would like to create outgoing mail templates that include standard text and settings. "Stationary" is definitely NOT what I want.
There may be other means of addressing particular problems. For instance, I used to bcc myself using a default template, but that's a direct setting in Mail (though I can't bcc an address other than my own). The biggest annoyance I have at the moment is not being able to preset the From field to match certain recipients (or at least check this which I could do with an outgoing filter. I bounce mail on lists constantly because I forget to change the From field to the correct sender.
The best I've been able to think of so far is to create a folder of sent mails that are actually templates that I "Send Again." Though to create the templates, I would have to send them to the recipient first which is a bit awkward.
Ideas?
Cheers,

Hallo,
this may sound crazy, but I still have a functional Mac G3 with system 9.1 from which I do my music arranging. Recently, the monitor "died" and the local Apple store was unable to test it to find out what happened.
Anyway, does anyone know where I can find a monitor that can work with MAC OS 9.1. None of the new monitors are compatibile.
Just for the record, I do have two newer G5's with 10.5.8 and 10.6.8. I'm just afraid to upgrade the program where I do the music arranging and all the files were done in system 9.1.
Please send suggestions to my E-mail
