What Font does the iPad use?

Posted by: "Bill B." bill501@mindspring.com   kernos501

Tue Apr 10, 2012 5:59 am (PDT)

I imported my OS X Safari bookmarks to my iPad Safari. I have a number Folders in my Bookmarks Bar named with just a symbol (like a musical note for Music). Several of these show up as boxes on the iPad, meaning the unicode character is not defined for whatever Font the iPad is using.

I'd like to see what characters the iPad font contains by downloading a copy to my MacBook Pro, if possible.

TIA,

Bill

I can't specify a current model, but I have been using an Epson Perfection 3200 for several years. I scan docs, photo prints, 35mm photo neg strips (color & b/w), and mounted 35mm photo trans with great results. I would highly recommend Epson.

Does anyone have some insight as to which model number would best suit my needs?

Hi Carole,

I bought a Canon LIDE 700F and continue to be pleased with it. I've
checked that it is available on your side of the pond.
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/scanners/film_negative_scanners/canoscan_lide_700f

It is powered by USB so it doesn't need a power brick. The film
scanning is done with a LED-illuminated light source on a flexible
lead that you place over a film carrier - unfortunately this won't
take mounted slides. With a max resolution of 9600 dpi the quality of
scanned film is surprisingly good. There's a positive/negative film
setting. I use Mac OS 10.6.8.

Howdy.

I put "Russian" in quote marks.

It is intended to be a caution to the reader that the report of the
number of infected computers was not to be trusted because the
information came out of Russia. It was intended to be a caution that
the original information might not have come from a legitimate Russian
source at all.

Eastern Europe and Russia have a significant history of producing
malware. This is not new. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the
Soviet controlled countries in Eastern Europe and after the fall of the
Soviet government we saw a big increase in the amount of malware coming
out of those regions. There were even nasty things written for the
previous Mac OS 9 that came out of Eastern Europe.

This is not to say that Eastern Europe is the only source of malware.
It's certainly not but it is not exactly zone with a good reputation
for dealing with malware.

Apple's Mail on the Mac allows for signatures, which you can then choose within the message you are composing. I've got over 50 in there, although I'm writing this on my iPad....

There are Mail app plug-ins that contain collections of quotes in signatures. Some will randomize the signature for you. Try Hawkwings.com for Apple Mail. I don't use one so can't recommend.

Top menu Mail > Preferences > Signatures > +

You can set one automatically or post pick one from the signature menu (next to From).

Add different sets for different accounts. Use a little ascii in there -

Thanks Jim,
It was yours I noticed most often. Do they come up automatically or do you have to choose one each time? I was hoping for random selections from some source.

At the bottom of the Preferences menu for Signatures you can choose Random, Sequential or None. Choose an account, then look at the bottom of the list of sig lines. I think you have to put your own lines or quotes in. Maybe Jim has info on this.

You can set the default to whichever you want.
I think you can create "stationeries" with different defaults.
You can select any particular one that seems ore appropriate for a given message.

Howdy.

These are generically called "Signatures."

Many email programs allow you to create signatures. There were
originally intended as a way to provide business contact information
such as name of company, phone number, and often a "This is a private
message__." etc., etc., etc., note.

How fancy a signature can be depends on the email program.

Apple's Mail program lets you create a signature in Preferences. You
can have different signatures for different mail accounts.

You can also drag a graphic into a signature in Apple Mail.

There are Signature add ons that you can download that add signatures
and that also randomize the choice of them.

Note that for a fancy signature, i.e., one with graphics, fonts, bold,
etc., to arrive at the destination intact that the destination
recipient has to have an email program that understands html.

I use an email program named GyazMail that lets me create signatures
but not fancy html ones. However, it will display an html based fancy
signature in an incoming message.

A great source for fun signatures is Ambrose Bierce's "The Devil's
Dictionary." Ambrose Bierce was an American satirist and epigramist.
The items of his "The Devil's Dictionary" began to appear in a weekly
newspaper in 1881 (ending around 1906). Here's a free one from Ambrose
Bierce to start you off with.

Netflix streaming problem with Airport Extreme

Posted by: "Vixpix" vixpix26@hvc.rr.com   nyskater

Tue Apr 10, 2012 11:23 am (PDT)

Does anyone here know about the issue that Airport Extreme is having with streaming videos on Netflix? After experiencing numerous buffering interruptions during a movie last night on my Smart TV, I did an Internet search on it and found out that it has been a known problem with dubious fixes. My Internet speed is fine; the issue is with my wi-fi.

Any suggestions? I just recently received the AE as a gift. It has the latest upgrade. Before that, I did not have any buffering problems with Netflix.

Are you possibly in Germany? Your email domain suggests that.

It is possible that because of your location and/or email domain, it used a server that gave you the German language version. You may have to go to

http://support.apple.com/downloads/

and download the English or en version of software updates. It sounds like from your PS that you resolved this by going to MacUpdate, which probably only has one location for update servers, in the US, and that is why that update worked.
