On that site there are manuals and when I click on those and search manuals for time machine I get a PDF.

iPhone Notes & iCloud

Hi,

I would like to transfer Notes from my iPhone4 to my iMac. On my iPhone, I have the option to turn on Notes. Does this mean notes I write on my phone can be transferred to my iMac?

I am required to create a @me.com email address to enable this. What is this? (I am not a Mobile Me user).

Thanks

Terry,

No, that doesn't help. I did copy the page from the site you [provided the link to but mky problem is How to use time Machine to recover missingOAS X items.

I think I clobered the 'users; section of Finder. At least I no longer have one and now when I click on my user name to go to my user section of finder I get a permissions error message.

Howdy.

Well, Jim, if you have "clobbered" your users; section, not sure what
that means, deleted it? then what do you expect but a lot of mess and
trouble?

Why don't you boot from your Lion Recovery partition and attempt to
re-install a fresh Lion than restore from your Time Machine backup?

One critical thing here, Jim, is: do you know what it was that you did to "clobber the 'users; section of Finder"?

So you don' simply go and do it again?

Recovering using TM

I posted about using Time Machine, but I know how to use it to backup, but not how to recover. Does anyone know how to do that. It's like knowing how to build a bomb shelter but not what to do after the bomb hits. :-(

Howdy.

Time Machine has two parts.

1. The backup part which you see in System Preferences > Time Machine.

2. The Restore part which is named Time Machine.app and is found in
your Applications folder.

The trick to restore things selectively is easy to miss but great to
use when comprehended.

The selective restore trick is:

First: Click to select a folder in Finder containing the item to be
restored, or, the folder that contained the file or folder that you
want to Restore.

Second: Then launch Time Machine.app by a click on the Time Machine
icon in the Dock. The app icon is usually found in the Dock by default
but if not then just return Time Machine to the Dock by dragging the
application icon to the Dock. This is the convenient way to use Time
Machine Restore with these directions.

Third: With the folder pre selected, Time Machine will start and then
automatically navigate to the last backed up item for it. This is a
convenience and a time saver.

Fourth: Select the item to restore and then click the Restore button.

Done.

Denver Dan,

My problem was that what I wanted to recover/restore sas either gone or invisible. So even had I known how to restore my 'users' folder I couldn't have clicked it in Finder. :-)

Be in the folder with the files you want to recover. Click the Time
Machine menu bar icon and enter Time Machine. Scroll back in time to
where the file you want to restore is. Select it and click restore.

The "surrounding" folder is "Macintosh HD" (or whatever you have named it).

Run Time Machine with that *drive* displayed in a Finder window, and scroll backward in time until the Users folder appears there at the top level.

Recovering using Time Machine

One of this groups users sent me a link to the Time Machine manual. TNX.
I don't recall anyone writing about recovery, just how to back up.
I had somehow clobered the USERS folder but not my account. assume that the missing USERS folder was why clicking my user name in Finder showed the permissions error message. Anyway the manual sowed how to recover to a date. I had to scroll down in the manual to the section on restoring data, quite a ways down.

But now my USers folder is back and I don't get the error message when I click on my user name.

Here's a link to probably more than you care to know about Time Machine:

<http://www.pondini.org/OSX/Home.html> "Apple OSX and Time Machine Tips"

Coming from another platform and prior CLI experience, you might find a good source of information on many Mac topics in the "Take Control of..." book series from TidBits publishing.

"Take Control of Backing Up your Mac" has lots of information regarding Time Machine and other strategies.

Will be away for several days attending a Titanic murder mystery event.

We all need to see a little humor in all of these recent events and I
just uploaded a Steve Jobs cartoon to the Photos section online for our
group.

User your web brewer, log in to MacSupportCentral, click the Photos
section, and find the new album named Cartoons.

Best wishes to all for a nice weekend and the 100th anniversary of
Titanic's loss.

Re: Flatbed scanner question

Posted by: "Denver Dan" denver.dan@verizon.net   denverdan22180

Wed Apr 11, 2012 10:49 am (PDT)

Howdy.

Before making a scanner purchase, I urge you to visit the maker's major
web site and do some research on the scanner and what software comes
with it and what Mac OS X system version the driver and software is
compatible with.

If particular, check for compatibility and updated drivers and TWAIN
items for Lion's 64-bit system.

Many people use a TWAIN link to scan from within Adobe Photoshop. The
TWAIN thing is just a link plugin installed in a Photoshop folder that
lets you start a scan from within Photoshop and finish it as an open
Photoshop image. This is very convenient. TWAIN plugs also let you
scan from other programs like Image Capture, GraphicConverter, etc.

The issue here is that some scanner makers may not have updated their
TWAIN plugin so it works when Photoshop is launched as a 64-bit
application. This is the case with my Canon CanoScan8800F scanner
model.

I now use the included Canon scanning program as a separate program and
can't use the TWAIN plug in for it if I want to run Photoshop in 64-bit
mode.

However, in recent years, I think Canon has done a fairly decent job of
keeping their scanning software up to date and perhaps a bit of a
better job than Epson has done.

I've owned and used Microtek, UMAX, LinoType Hell, Epson, HP, and Canon
scanners and overall in recent years have been a bit more satisfied
with the Canon.

Be sure to look at the tech specs before buying. The density (aka
DMAX) rating can be important if you intend to scan slides. The higher
the better on this rating.

A software feature called Descreen is important to have if you will be
scanning printed material like magazines, newspapers, books, etc. A
low cost scanner's included software may not provide Descreen ability.

Note if the scanner comes with 3rd party scanning software like
SilverFast. SilverFast is pretty good stuff and is sometimes included
with a variety of scanner models as an extra but comes in a basic,
medium, and full featured version. You can search for SilverFast and
learn more about it. SilverFast is a European company.

Did you recently relocate?

I believe it has been this way for several years now, the same as the OS. But yes, iTunes is influenced by regional laws and licensing.

I jumped over one version no. (from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1, with 10.6 in between). The software update via Apple menu doesn always provide all components of earlier versions, only the most recent ones; that what I have learned about the difference between Software Update via Apple menu and using a regular installer from Apple or download sites like MacUpdate. That also makes sense to me.

Perhaps that was the reason why Software Update via Apple menu did not work for me this time.
