The Nexus 7 “Smart Cover” in action — how should Apple respond?

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 03:10 PM PDT

Today I received my Nexus 7 “Smart Cover”. Okay, it’s really just a bulky case, but it closely mimics the function of Apple’s innovative means of screen protection. I ordered it simply to compare it to Apple’s original version of the Smart Cover.

As you have probably heard, the Nexus 7 contains an unadvertised feature — magnets on the front right-side of the device, which very much imitate the iPad’s sleep/wake functionality.

Should Apple be upset with this unadvertised feature?(...)

Possible next-gen iPhone prototypes surface in Bangkok

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 01:54 PM PDT

Apple’s iPhone media event isn’t expected to happen for another 6 weeks, but the tech world is fairly confident in what the handset is going to look like. Since May of this year, we’ve seen several parts surface from different sources that all point to the same two-tone design.

And more evidence of the theory has surfaced today. Some new pictures are starting to make their way around the web of what some folks believe to be a finalized prototype for the next iPhone…(...)

Photos of Apple’s NC campus show solar farm and new tactical data center

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 11:42 AM PDT

The sneaky folks over at Wired just flew a 1949 Piper PA-11 (Cub Special) aircraft over Apple’s Maiden, North Carolina campus to see what the old Cupertino company was up to. And apparently, it’s building stuff.

The publication’s “iSpy Plane” managed to grab photos of a number of new structures on the campus, including Apple’s 100-acre solar farm, and its mysterious “tactical data center” we learned about last month…(...)

How to bypass iPad jailbreak detection on Amazon’s new video streaming app

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 11:01 AM PDT

Yesterday Amazon launched Amazon Instant Video, its new video streaming app for the iPad. The app lets you either stream or mark for download and later offline viewing any previously purchased video from Amazon. It also allows Amazon Prime users to stream over 120,000 videos for free.

Jailbreak users were quick to note that Amazon put a block in place to prevent them from using the app. As we reported this morning, Amazon even confirmed the problem, basically saying that if you are using a jailbroken iPad, there is nothing they can do for you.

But don’t worry, as usual, the jailbreak community has your back…(...)

iPad slaughters competition, gains share in Q2

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 09:56 AM PDT

The iPad is increasingly looking like a big success story for Apple though investors have been largely ignoring the fact due to their fixation with the iPhone, which fell three million units short of predictions in Q2 2012.

During the June quarter, Apple sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase over the 9.25 million iPads sold in the year-ago quarter and up from the 11.8 million iPads shipped in Q1 2012. In just twelve months, Apple increased its share by almost seven percentage points, from 61.5 percent in Q2 2011 to a whopping 68.2 percent in Q2 2012.

Samsung and Asus also gained, the former on the heels of its Galaxy Tab lineup that Apple thinks copies the iPad’s look and feel, and the latter based on strong sales of own products and the Nexus 7 which Asus makes for Google…(...)

Even smarter Smart Cover could be in the works, patent hints

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 09:15 AM PDT

A much more capable Smart Cover could be in the works as a newly surfaced patent application indicates Apple’s been researching a next-generation iPad cover which combines a built-in keyboard with a flexible display itself driven by multitouch technology.

Coincidentally, a recent rumor asserted Apple was researching bendable displays and exploring ways to use flexible panels in mobile gadgets (Samsung’s already on it). As for the smarter Smart Cover, it could also incorporate solar panels for easy recharging under sunlight, in addition to inductive charging, smart pen input and even a battery engineered inside the case in a variety of ways…(...)
