I assume you want to upgrade the OS?

It is fairly simple but first you have to tell us which mini it is as this
dictates the latest OS X version you can install. See if you can identify
it here
<http://lowendmac.com/mini/mac-mini-index.html>

You can also go to Apple menu > About this Mac and tell us what it says for
Processor and Memory.

Okay.
This is the very first Mac Mini.

You have 256 MB of RAM; it can accept and work with 1 GB.

You have some form of MacOS 10.4 (Tiger); the most recent version of MacOS that this machine can run is 10.5.8 (Leopard).

How you upgrade depends on your needs and your budget.

Simply replacing the 256 MB RAM stick with a 1 GB one, quadrupling your memory, would cost $25 and be do-able yourself:
<http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/item/6559/OWC2700DDR1024/>
<http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/mac_mini_g4/>

I'm not sure where to get Leopard at a reasonable price right now.

Right now you can get an Apple-refurbished-with-full-warranty Mac mini 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 for $520:

Howdy.

Nanci, speaking frankly, your Mac Mini is now an antique.

Neither Lion nor Mountain Lion can be installed on it.

It has a thimbleful of RAM/Memory and that's just not enough. I
suspect it runs very very slowly.

Your Mac Mini has a PowerPC processor and those were discontinued a
number of years ago and replaced by Intel processors. Current
applications, systems, drivers, etc., are now all designed for the
Intel processor.

If you can, buy a new Mac. The speed alone will expel you out of your
tube socks and you will have to Scotch Guard the rug to prevent launch
burns. If you get a new Mac, the first thing most folks do is order
more RAM. Good thing to do.

If you can't get a new Mac, I'd strongly suggest getting an Intel
processor based used Mac. If you do this, ask for help here first
about the model you are thinking about getting BEFORE getting it. Some
of the earliest Intel Macs are also now too old to have the most recent
OS, Mountain Lion, installed (I have one of them).

If you decide to keep your current Mac Mini, then spend about $25 or so
USD to upgrade the RAM to 1 GB as suggested by Jim S. It really does
make a difference. Then try to find a copy of the Mac OS X 10.5.x
Leopard operating system. You could try eBay for that. But note that
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is the end of the operating system line for your
current computer.
It is possible you might have to pay more for Leopard now than Apple
charged for it back when it was new.

If you do decide to get more RAM, many folks here have had good
experiences with Crucial RAM, Data Memory Systems (DMS), and OWC all
three of which provide good service and have good prices.

Good luck!

I had that problem with my older HP, a 5500 as I recall, when I went
to either Leopard or Snow Leopard. However, it was AFTER I bought the
new all-in-one that I heard about VueScan. I tried the demo copy of
VueScan (which inserts $ watermarks in the scan until you pay for it)
and it did work. In my case, though, my old printer was having other
problems anyway. If you can still return the new one you might want
to download a copy of VueScan and see if it works on your MP350.

Thanks Barry but I had the new one for about 6 months. A small piece of glass fell into my old printer would not let paper feed without jamming. I couldn't get it to work and could not be without a printer for more than a day or two, so I quickly ordered a new one from Amazon with 2 day delivery. The next day I turned the new printer upside down and gave it a good shake and the piece of glass fell out. I didn't cancel the old printer because I had ordered a wireless one and thought it would be a great help to me with both my wife and I having computers running at the same time. I kept the new one in the closet for 6 months until a couple of days ago after I installed ML and went to scan a picture (I am not even sure if it was printing or not) and found that it didn't work and Canon was saying they were not going to update the drivers for ML. I just had to go into the closet and break out the new printer and install it. It was ML supported by cannon and I just downloaded the new drivers and software from their we site. Now I am posting in a Yahoo Group to see if anyone local wants the old printer for free. It will work fine for Windows and/or Mac up to Lion.

When you state, "Apple has been of no help" do you mean you showed them your computer demonstrating this problem at the "Genius Bar" in an Apple Store, and they tested various things, and were still unable to help you?

Or do you mean you discussed your problem on the phone?

If the latter, then (1) you should try the former, and (2) what exactly did you ask, and what did they suggest?

Oh, and the last "PB" (Powerbook, in Macintosh parlance) was discontinued over 6 years ago, and cannot run Snow Leopard, so perhaps you could be more specific as to what computer you have there.

Sorry, meant MacBook Pro. Major brain fart.

I was at the Genius Bar and of course I didn't get the blue screen there. The man I worked with had never heard of anything like it so just ran some diagnostics, repaired some files and sent me on my way.

Today the blue screen showed up where it doesn't normally. Just running Thunderbird, Firefox and Adobe Reader. It will typically flash on and off a few times before it remains. I was hoping someone here would recognize this and have a easy answer.

I think another trip to the Genius Bar may be in my future.

thanks,
Paula

From your description, I have to agree with the "Genius" -- I've never seen or heard of anything quite like this.

Here is a link to a similiar situation at Apple Forum:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3353396?start=30&tstart=0

There were several suggestions, even getting a new mac, including problems with Adobe Reader and Flash, turning off graphic switcher in Energy Preferences, but two suggestions that ypu might try are basic:
1. Shut down completely. Unplug all cords to the mac. Wait ten minutes and replug/restart.
2. The old standby: Shut Down completely, Restart, but hold Apple+Option+P+R. Wait for two chimes and release the keys.

You may want to read the entire thread. jr

If there are no other symptoms such as a system crash, I suspect a
video/display problem, such as a loose/bad connection. Can you provoke the
fault by moving the lid/display?

I have posted this previously, but it doesn't seem to be making it to the group

This is one of my most frustrating Mac days ever, and I've been at it since 1984.

System: iMac 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, 24 inch, 500GB HD with 389 used.

I just updated from 10.7.4 to 10.8. Before I switched over, I was having intermittent system wide freezes. Everything would pause from between a very brief blip to a 4-5 second freeze. I posted this problem a couple of weeks ago on this group and got no suggestions on that one. This is really annoying to say the least. So far, knock on wood, iTunes hasn't yet frozen....crap....two quick ones there. This means no audio disc burning...bad bad bad

The second problem is the icons for time machine, bluetooth, wifi, volume, language, volume, and user menus will not drop down. Sometimes they go away completely. A click of any kind surrounds the icon with a darker grey box and they will flash the menu ever so quickly, but not usable in any way, shape or form. This started in 10.7.4 and I thought it was an OS X issue, but apparently it isn't. Is this a battery issue or a settings issue??

Last but not least, I mentioned the .mp4 file I have tried putting in drop box on the mac, but the app on the iPad first gen doesn't see it. I installed the video app, but it doesn't see the video either, even though the iPad screen in iTunes says I have 3 GB of video on the iPad.

So far, on 10.8, several programs are dead, one of which is my favorite audio player app, Vox. It is just deader than a doornail. I liked it a lot because it would play any format in a nice interface and I didn't have to convert anything.

Would someone please help me fix this stuff?

Rick

Howdy.

First, if your Mac was freezing before upgrading to Mountain Lion, why
would you expect the upgrade to fix those problems?

Installing software and upgrading the OS when the computer is not
working properly just isn't a good idea.

Secondly, did you check your important applications and drivers to see
if they were compatible with Mountain Lion before installing Mountain
Lion? Visiting the software makers web sites and checking for Mountain
Lion compatibility before installing ML is a good thing to do.

Do any of your now non working applications require Rosetta?

Thirdly, what have you done to try to fix these problems? At the least
have you rounded up the usual maintenance suspects, so to speak?

1. Repaired Disk Permissions.
2. Booted into Safe Disk mode.
3. Run a maintenance utility like OnyX to delete caches and do other
good things?
4. Booted into the Recovery partition and run Disk Utility's Repairs?

Your previous post made it to the group, and I posted answer:

We can do a ton of diagnostic work, but it sounds to me as if you
have a hosed system, possibly with bits from past OS's that aren't
compatible running.

Your best bet would probably be to do a complete clean re-install of
the OS.

Do you have an external hard drive with a bootable OS on it? If so,
when you boot from it are all of your problems gone? That would be a
big sign that a clean install of the OS would fix your problems.

Howdy.

Before upgrading to a new AirPort base station, do some checking
around.

A new and faster WiFi protocol is now out. It's called 802.11ac.

The ac is faster than 802.11n, and it seems to have the ability to be
directional.

Of course if you were to get a new 802.11ac WiFi router and the WiFi
cards in your devices are still 802.11n speed then it's won't do much
good.
