I read with interest the comments in this post. May I ask why one needs to
clean any cache? I've used a Mac for 5 years now and never have cleaned any
cache or used Onyx, and have had no problems with slowness or whatever.

I'm like to learn and try new things (maybe -- it didn't work so good for
Neelie), and further comments would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks.....Jim

I've got several different types of PDF "books" on my iPhone 3Gs (iOS
5.0). I'd like to arrange them via type (technical, leisure, language
learning, etc.). I don't see a "New Folder" option or such in iTunes.
How might I organize these to better meet my needs?

Same goes for audio books (ie, MP3s). Is there any way to arrange
them by category or such so that I can browse only -- for example --
French learning audio files?

Thanks,
Dave

In your iTunes library, select the pdf or item and {Apple+I}. Then look for Options/Media Kind, make sure it's either an audiobook or a music file chosen. Find Info/Genre, chose a genre or make one up. A third suggestion is to include the type in the title of the file, like "Technical - Lot's of Love Coding - Author's name", or "Author's Name - Lot's of Good Lovin' - Leisure".

I like using the file title to help sort various type of books, movies, songs. jr

For the audio books, you could also create different Playlists in itunes for each category.

Do you really need to print it? Just keep the messages?

Which model printer and scanner are they? Canon are pretty good with Mac
support.

For basic Mac info have you been to
<http://www.apple.com/uk/support/> Video Tutorials and Manuals.

?

Was just given a Brother 2070 wireless laser (discontinued). I plugged it and installed driver on laptop, et voila! Done without wires.

I like the cheap Brother lasers and have had experience with several. This wireless version has not disappointed, yet. And remember, I got it used. I've also had cheap Samsungs. Okay, but I like the Brothers better. Cheap is cheap. Don't expect these to last five years, and when the parts where out, they are not worth repairing.

Because you said B&W I figure you want laser. If not and you are low volume, you can get the cheapest versions of the Canon, Epson, HP, and Brother wireless inkjets for $50. I have had decent experiences with inkjets from all of them. If you are high volume, get a laser or a more expensive ink jet with very low per page costs. Do NOT save money up front. The ink costs will kill you if you print a lot (as in a couple hundred pages a month). Cheap inkjet printers use more ink in more expensive cartridges.

This is not true of B&W lasers. Most B&W lasers are cheaper by the page than most inkjets. Also faster and easier to maintain.

If you are a business printing at 3000+ pages a month or more, the best deal going is a Xerox Phaser 8560 from the xeroxfreeprinters program.

Cheers,
tod

First, thank you to all of you who have responded to my request for help. I've gone back and reviewed my posts and responses and I've missed a few, to say the least.

Please forgive me if at times I sound confused. I am. I have had a long period of time, well for the last 2 years and 4 months where my abilities to comprehend or perform tasks that used to be routine are waning. Please be patient with me and as detailed as possible in your responses. I would appreciate it. I'm slowly getting it back, but it's just that, slow. I'm a vet, a VA person. I get all my health care from them. The drugs they have been dosing me up with are the culprits I believe. That's why I'm not taking them any longer, and my clarity of mind is slowly returning from the fog and confusion. I'm not there yet, but I do have hope.

I appreciate and need the help given here in the group, perhaps more than you folks know.

Rick

No need to apologize, Rick. As I age, I recognize the slow diminishing of
most of my senses. It's to be expected, in most people.
So, most can empathize with what you're going thru. I like to think I'm so
incredibly lucky, because every day I read of folks who are FAR worse off
than I am. It really helps to keep perspective.
I'd talk to whoever is was prescribed those drugs that are affecting you.
You might be entirely right and the dosage either needs to be reduced or
perhaps a different one offered you.
What's the right dose for one person may not at all be right for someone
else. Check it out.

Much good luck, and do take care of yourself...

Since upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion on my mid-2010 MBP (specs below), I am unable to start in Single User mode

Using instruction from Apple here:
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492

Other than this single issue, the MBP is running very well, with no problems.

Has anyone else seen this issue? Found a solution?

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B0F
SMC Version (system): 1.58f16

Thanks!

This turned out to be a case of unintended consequences.

If you enable Firmware Password to prevent booting from any disk other than the designated startup disk (intended consequence), the single-user mode CMD-S and CMD-V are also disabled (unintended consequence).

This makes sense because once root access is available, volumes can be mounted at will.

Assuming you don't want to plunk down the money for Roxio Toast, try "Burn"

http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html

Does the job and is open source, so free.

If you want to burn audio CDs, use iTunes. If you are making DVD video discs, use iDVD. All these will burn the specific formats directly. Finder level burns works fine too, but I've had more trouble with cross-platform discs from Finder then "Mac and PC" formatted discs from Toast. Most aftermarket drives sold retail for Mac come with a light version of Toast. If you've ever purchased such a thing, you may have an old version of Toast laying around. If so, this is likely to work fine unless it's very, very old.

Cheers,

I have a chance of acquiring some 150 GB Western Digital Velociraptor
drives with these specs:
150 GB - SATA 3 GB/sec interface -
10,000 RPM - 4.2 msec avg. seek time - 16 MB buffer
$40 per piece....

First - is this a good drive? I have good things about these
[Velociraptor] particular drives, though generally not so good things
about WD.
Is this size big enough to install as a boot drive for any and any or
all those OS X versions?
Should I just keep the OS on that and leave the applications on another
drive?

I am currently on SnowLeopard and I am considering installing one or two
of these as Lion or Mountain Lion boot drives as an alternate OS boot
before committing to Lion or Mt-Lion. Could I partitiion it for both
Lion versions, or should I not even bother with Lion, now that Mt-Lion
is out? My production machine has to stay on SnowLeopard until my
clients green-light the move to Lion or Mt-Lion to be compatible with
their systems and print drivers (the digital press and inkjet drivers
from Canon, Xerox and HP are not there yet, so we have to wait for
that!, or not print....). But I do eventually want to get current with
the OS once the bugs are worked out. Any advice would be appreciated.

These drives would be good scratch drives for Photoshop in any case, but
I thought their speed might be good, but probably not as good as a SSD
drive of same size? Certainly cheaper!

Computer specs are: MacPro5,1 [October 2010, bought as refurb June 2011]
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 24 GB
