One suggestion: power off the iPhone. Hold top button down till you are asked if you want to power off, then slide yes. Wait a minute. Power up and see if anything changed.

Could be a glitch in your Dock's cache.
If you are okay with the Terminal, open a Terminal window and type "killall Dock" (without the quotes). The Dock will restart itself automatically.
You can achieve the same result by launching Activity Monitor, locating and selecting the Dock process, and clicking the Force Quit button.

Thank you to Harry, Jim H, Randy, Chris and Paul for comments and suggestions.

I did solve my "slowness" issue today. I restarted with the Install disk, verified the disk (OK), then verified and ran permissions repair. That did the trick. Everything seems to be working just fine.

It is possible that I deleted something I should not have while using Onyx. I thought I was extra careful, but it's entirely possible that I made an error.

I did try to repair permissions prior to booting with the Install disk, and that just seemed to create more problems. But the booting with the Install disk, then going to disk utility worked great.

I will wait to see if I still get script errors as time goes by. It still maybe coming up on time to do a clean install.

Thanks again everyone.

Nanci,

It might be slow by the latest standards but it should still be usable.
Have you followed Randy's tune-up tips at
<http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html> ?

Of course, this applies to any app that you want in the Dock and isn't
already there. Conversely, if the Dock is cluttered with apps you never
use, just drag them off and they disappear in a puff of smoke (this does
*not* delete the app itself, just its "alias" in the Dock). You can also
move Dock entries around by dragging them.

I myself have had bad luck with WD drives. Hitachi and Seagate have been
good for me.
150 GB will work for boot drives for OS X boot drives (up to and including
Mountain Lion) but I think you will find them small.
Could be good for emergency drives, though. If you obtain an external drive
dock , such as the NewerTech Voyager Q, you can attach the dock to a
FireWire or USB or ESATA cable and mount an internal SATA drive, either 2.5
inch or 3.5 inch. Works great on my Mac Pro FireWire 800. It's
hot-swappable, so you can eject hard drives like they were DVDs. Just one
at a time, though.

Glad the VoyagerQ dock has worked for you, Jon. I have had two in a row fail. OWC replaced the first under warranty, but they refused to warranty the 2nd. I suspect either a design or manufacturing defect, which is why I asked for a replacement. It was out of warranty, but two in a row suggests a problem with the equipment and I didn't feel I should bear the burden of their problems.

Regarding the original post, I have also had a few problems with WD drives, but no experience with Velociraptor drives. I've had the best results with Hitachi drives. What about an SSD drive for your OS and/or applications? They're really fast and the prices are dropping as they become mainstream. Still more expensive than a rotating drive, but worth considering if speed and reliability are important.

One more question: My HP SCANJET 4370 has a USB connection but it my Mac doesn't acknowledge it. If I go to HP's site and download drivers will that help. It wouldn't harm the computer if I tried??
Thanks

That's always a good option, and that will not be a problem, Gary.

I've occasionally "shared my Internet Connection" with my wife's laptop using Ethernet cables between the two devices to avoid two charges for the WiFi access point in hotel rooms during domestic trips (in the US).

Next week we leave for Europe for 2 weeks. Each of the hotel rooms we'll be staying in ostensibly offers WiFi internet access. Is it the case that I should be able to use the Airport Express (N) router I have lying unused on my shelf to create a LAN in the hotel room? We've not needed to do this in the past because our phones could get their internet access using cellular data, and everything I read tells me I should turn cellular data "off" on our iPhones before the plane takes off in the US and not turn it back on again until we're back on ATT soil (weak attempt at a double entendre there).

The specific question, I guess is that the hotel's router will be doing dhcp, and I'll want my Airport Express to do dhcp for our little private LAN in the hotel room. Will that be possible? Is there any preliminary configuration I can do (creating the network SSID and password for example) using Airport Utility on one of my Macs here at home before we leave?

Thanks so much,

Are the hotels limiting you to only one computer on their Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi
routers generally allow multiple connections.

I never knew this existed. It's way cool! (Steve Jobs plays FDR in an in-house broadcast production quality video meant to stimulate Apple's sales force at a 1984 Hawaiian sale meeting).

Sorry about that! It was as simple as removing the local calendars from Calendar, which is where all the extraneous New Events were located. I also discovered that only the calendars listed under 'iCloud' were synched with iCloud.

They weren't, and now I'm afraid the screwed up calendar will get sent to iCloud and I will have nothing but the screwed up calendar anywhere. I've shut down the iMac until I get my head around this (with the group's help, of course). Isn't the new Calendar supposed to use the calendar on iCloud? If so, how would I force it to be populated with the events currently in the iCloud calendar?
