I've been trying to download a free SP Real Media Player into my new iMac with Lion, and get a message that this download is dangerous for my computer.

Is this true?

Randy;

I agree - there are some REALLY useful features. You might not use them every day, but there they are. At least for today.

I just goggled "addresbook to csv" and of the many hits was this one, which looks good:<http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/9312/address-book-exporter>

In trying this, I just exported as .csv (and also as .tsv) to the Desktop from SeaMonkey. Whether I dropped the file on Excel or used Excel's File/Open menu, the file simply opened. I certainly didn't use Excel's Export command. The data was perfectly aligned in correct columns. Oh, I see that you must have meant Excel's Import command.

The Import command does give you the dialog, though I found it actually worked better and faster just to directly open the CSV without using Import and having to adjust the columns.

Anyway, how nice, not to have to get a third-party utility to do what is so easy with free SeaMonkey and Excel. Thanks!

And if by some rare chance you load a website that *does* require Java, simply turn it back on in your browser preferences.

I learned to drive on a car with a manual transmission, and drove one for many years. When I switched to a car with an automatic transmission, I was troubled (for about a month) by a nagging feeling that I was forgetting to do something important. ;)

Sorry, I don't remember how this thread started, but if you want to see your Hard Drive on the desktop, at least in the last version or two (or three?) of the operation system, go to the Finder ( as in, click on the Desktop, for instance) and once in the Finder, to go the Finder Menu. Choose the Finder menu then Preferences.

In Preferences, click on "General" in the icon bar across the top. In "General," under "Show these items on the Desktop" click to put a checkmark by "Hard Disks."

It's much easier to do than to describe.

You may be thinking of the fact that you can use the Go menu to make
the User Library temporarily visible. That's now invisible under Lion.

Earthlink is my ISP. I get messages on Mail on my MacBook and my iPhone, and occasionally via their webmail access using Safari.

My Earthlink mail is POP. On my Mac Mail, I have the options for the POP account set to remove mail from the Earthlink server when it is downloaded. On my iPhone I have the options for the POP account set to remove mail from the Earthlink server only when it is removed from the inbox on the iPhone. So, if I download email on my iPhone, it remains on the Earthlink server unless I move it out of my inbox on my iPhone, and it will still be available for download on my Mac if I haven't moved it on my iPhone.

When I check email using webmail, if I delete a message it goes into a Trash folder and remains there for 14 days.

I think Louise needs to check how she has her set up on both the G4 and the Mini. They appear to be set differently, like maybe the Mini never removes email from the server when she downloads them, and the G4 removes them only after deleting them on the G4.

Can previous generation MacBook Pro be downgraded to Snow Leopard?

Posted by: "Tight Guy" jcrowe@jcrowe.net   jcrowe1950

Hi Folks,
There is a pretty decent sale going on for last generation (early 2011) Macbook Pros at various places. My 2006 MBP is growing long in the tooth, but I want to have the Snow Leopard capability of running Rosetta for old PowerPC apps. Does anybody know if, given possession of the Snow Leopard install DVD, that OS downgrade is possible? Thanks in advance for any info.

It's certainly possible if the machine you buy came with Snow Leopard originally. If it was a machine that originally came with Lion already installed, then I don't think you will be able to downgrade it.

Sorry,

in one version of Address book there is/was an option to export (or maybe at some point in the past I downloaded a script for it) but here is another option...

export as vCard, and then go to this website:
<http://labs.brotherli.ch/vcfconvert/>

change the format from LDIF to CSV and then you can work with your data...

Junk mail

I'm generally very lucky with avoiding junk mail - touch wood! My ISP stops a lot and I have several rules to deflect others.

However, the last few weeks I occasionally get an odd one slip through - the odd part being that they appear to be sent by me to me, offering me some sort of weird job where I can earn big money but do nothing. I know I can just hit delete, but I'd rather stop them. I have looked in long headers but can see nothing common in any of them to latch on to for a rule. Bounce doesn't work.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? In particular anyone else seen this gimmick of sending from me to me?

Any thoughts welcome
