Struggling with iCloud, Address Book, and Calendars
Posted by: "James Robertson" jamesrob@sonic.net jamesrob328i

I'll deal primarily with Contacts in this thread.
When I joined iCloud, somehow I ended up with one set of contacts "On My Mac," accompanied by a default "All on My Mac" smartgroup, in addition to an initially identical "All iCloud" group under "iCloud". The "On My Mac" contacts are listed as the "Local" account in Address Book preferences. If I edit a card in the "iCloud" group, that does not propagate into the local group, nor does information entered into the "Local" group, e.g., a new "test" contact, show up in iCloud.
This is the case on both of my Macs (MacBook Pro and Mac Pro). Both are fully updated 10.7.3 installations. Neither of these local accounts synchronize with anything else (even with the "local" set on the other Mac!)
HOWEVER, I can't figure out any way to get rid of this set of contacts! I could delete any other account, but the "minus" toggle in the "Accounts" pane of Address Book Prefs is dimmed for this account on both Macs. On both Macs, the "default account" is listed as "iCloud".
I've tried just to ignore this account, but it creates repercussions, such as duplicate entries on the "birthdays" calendar in iCloud.
There must be SOME way to get rid of this account! Any ideas? I asked at my local genius bar and didn't get any useful help.
Thanks,

Yes, I agree, but my point is, that as almost everything else *is* the
same, you can concentrate on the few differences, which are then much
easier to learn/deal with.

Otto,
They are really not much easier to deal with. They are not impossible to deal with but it is more difficult when I also use three PCs.
I imagine that if I could find a buyer for my five year old Mac Pro, I would probably sell it. But I paid the better part of $4000 for it and a new Pro would probably be more powerful. So I probably could not get $100 even if I found a buyer. Then there's the additional problem, which I hesitate to even mention. I hardly ever use the age excuse, but I AM old, seventy five, Challenges like computing, I hope, are keeping my brain from attrophying but I still have some trouble.

Jim.
You have to be specific.
What does "I choose View>Font Sizes" mean?
What program are you using that View>Font Sizes doesn't work? What
application? Or, do you mean Finder?
What does "R=Text Editor" mean? I have absolutely no idea what that
means. Is it something you see in a program? If so what program?
File Name's in Finder can have Labels applied to them. Labels mean
that the color of the file name text and background can have different
colors. This is official called a "Label." You can assign a term to
each of the color Labels for your own convenience. See Finder >
Preferences > Labels.
If you wish to make the text size for Finder file names and folder
names larger, do the following:
1. Click the Desktop to make Finder active.
2. Choose View menu then Show View Options.
A dialog box will open with settings for the Desktop.
3. Change the Icon size by sliding the slider to a larger size.
Change the File Name and Folder name text size by entering a new font
size number in the Text Size pop up menu.
To make file name and folder names text size larger in a Finder window
do the same thing except first select any Finder window to make it
active. Then pick Show View Options. The font size options are 10,
11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 point size.

If you threw away your purchased Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard install

I didn't toss, Snow Leopard, it was the previous ones I tossed. And because I didn't have any previouis ones my SL disk would not install and I couldn't verify that I even had one.

Only one? Can't. I'll give you the general parameters for which Trash is inadequate.
I work with external drives from 1-4TB, often many at a time and files that can exceed 50GB. I commonly delete files in batches of hundreds or thousands. Frequently my purpose is to immediately clear space. At the same time, I love the Trash for routine deletion.
If I had to "empty" it every time I needed a file truly deleted (which is many times a day), Trash would be totally useless.
Features that should have, but doesn't:
Trash will hold on to anything, regardless of size. There is no limit. I cannot afford to hold 100GB files in the Trash.
Trash will not "empty" selectively. Why on earth would I want to empty out all 2000 files in my Trash just to delete the one 50GB file that I know I want to delete?
Trash holds everything forever and never empties. It has no automatic deletion routines based on age or FIFO principles. Unless I "empty" it completely, no space is ever released.
Trash isolates by user, even on externals set to ignore permissions. If I clear a drive using Trash, and hand it to someone else, it's still full, and there is no way for the other user to "empty" the Trash. This happens frequently to me, requiring a phone call to get permission to "erase" the drive.
Cheers,

In this case I think I have your solution. There is a great
application called TrashIt. Rather than dragging your to-be-deleted
icons to the trash delete them to TrashIt, just put an alias to it on
your Desktop. As I recall, it does require your putting in your
password to effect this deletion, but you can put all your
to-be-deleted files into a folder and then drag the folder onto the
TrashIt icon.

I see your point here. If it is only a few very large files then I
would think TrashIt would do it for you, and you would not mind
giving it your password.
>Trash holds everything forever and never empties. It has no

To me that is an advantage, not a drawback. Just look at your trash
periodically and see if there is anything you don't really want to
delete, drag it out, and then delete the trash. Too many, mostly
novices, use the trash for temporary storage, and that is a bad way
to do it. Your trash should never be so bloated that it is a problem.
Just make sure to empty it periodically. If you want, sort your
trash by date and see if there is anything reasonably new you want to
keep before you empty it. This is April 2. Look back through, maybe
3/15 or so, drag things you think you might want to keep out of the
trash, and then empty it. I repeat, the trash is not designed to be a
temporary storage location.

Here I don't understand. Why would you hand an drive to someone with
trash in it? Just empty the trash before you hand him that drive.
Here it is also maybe a security risk. Do you want him going through
your trash? I really think you are over-thinking it.

As Barry states below, Trash is not supposed to be a temporary storage area. It is to get rid of files.

That is because as Barry pointed out it is no a temporary storage area. If the Trash were not being used as temp storage, you could delete just the 50GB you put into it.

FIFO solution:
Put the files in a temporary storage folder instead of the Trash, view the temporary storage folder in List format, sort by date, select the ones you to delete, and move them to the Trash, and empty the Trash.
Don't use it not as intended, have to reinvent the wheel and then complain the developer and everyone else is wrong.

Good point Barry, if it had been intended for temp storage, they would have called it something like Temporary Storage Folder or Location, or Documents or My Documents.
Granted a contextual menu item called Move to Documents (or Temporary Storage Folder) would be nice.

What? If you Empty Trash, it marks the space as available to be written to or overwritten. The same as make space. If you use Secure Empty Trash, it also marks the space as available to be written to or overwritten, then overwrites the space with random garbage, and again the space is available as space on the drive.

Then Empty the Trash before you pass the drive so someone else.

Spoofing the headers is an old trick. I have not seen it recently and I would look for something else besides the headers in common to use in the rule.
And BTW, Bounce doesn't fool them and that is why Apple has dropped that in newer versions of Mail.app.

Easist way to export photos from the library is to just drag them from
teh iPhoto screen to the desktop, or whatever folder you want them in.
You don't need to go into the libary file at all.

This makes no sense to me. If you find the file you want, Option-Drag it from its folder to the Desktop. That should not mess up iPhoto at all. You're just dragging a copy.

Time Machine Problem iMac 2006 running 10.6.8

Friday I had a system freeze on start up. Rebooted with system disk ran permissions and disk check. Restarted - same issue. Got to the grey apple then nada.
Reinstalled Snow Leopard and that's when the problems began. I lost a lot on the HD and when I went to back up using Time Machine off of my Time Capsule the restore button isn't functional. I can open the Time Capsule disk, click the sparcebundle command open the virtual disk and see all of the backups. I can open any of the backups and see all of the files/folders and can open individual files and move them to my desktop which I have done. Folders will not move.
My problem is recovering my Safari bookmarks and Thunderbird files. I cannot copy or move them to my desk top. I want to replace the current profile in Thunderbird with the on residing on the Time Capsule but have hit a stone wall. Is there any workaround for this?

Replacing MobileMe Gallery

Hi all,
What services are you using to replace MobileMe's gallery and how do you like them. I have used Google's Picassa but it isn't integrated with iPhoto so I'm not sure of using it as a replacement.
I like the ability to password protect the images and video I share as well as the ability for others to add pictures which can then be added back to my iPhoto.
Would love to hear thoughts from people who have used MobileMe and where they are going to.

I have yet to find a suitable replacement. The Gallery looks so good on the iPad! I refuse to use online galleries that typically ask you to sign a waver regarding their rights to the images you upload on their site.
Still searching for something...

I thought Picasa Web Albums worked with iPhoto, or do you mean some other
function?

Wow! I don't recall this happening before. In the midst of creating a TextEdit doc it locked up, I couldn't even move the window. But nothing else seemed to be affected.

I used Forse Quit to close Text Edit and it closed and opening again brought back the file.
