Great answer for working on the desktop or a single folder. I have no problems with a single folder.
I've imported lots of stuff from the Windoz days. Seems to come in with random Icon & text size and show icon info settings.
I have not been able to find how to set View Options globally, or to set Icon Size to over 128 on the desktop.
Any suggestions?

Define globally? If you mean in Finder windows and on the Desktop, it is not available in one setting adjustment. It takes two adjustments, one to do all Finder windows and another to do the Desktop.
Dan gave you instructions on how to change the size of the font and icons on the Desktop. Are you asking how to get the most icons and labels on on the Desktop or are you asking how to change the font size to 128pt? 16 pt is the largest size available without a hack or Universal access.
Besides the more you have on your Desktop the slower the computer runs in either Mac OS or Windows.

Globally === Set icon size in ALL folders.
I have been setting Icon size in individual folders since 10.4.6. I asked about setting icon size globally.
Show View Options DOES NOT set icon size in "all Finder windows". It only sets the icon size in the current window, and in all directories created in the future, if [Use As Defaults] is selected.
I want to set the icon size in several hundred windows. Show View Options does not do that.

p.s. I have 2 spreadsheets referenced every day, 1 folder and 5 hard drives on the desktop.

How does one "use the Dropbox Public folder" for this?
If I drag the disc icon to this folder, it will not allow dropping
there. If I drag the "VIDEO_TS" folder from the DVD into the Dropbox
Public folder, Finder starts to copy 4.8 GB. If I try making an
alias, Finder still wants to copy all contents of that folder.
If the solution is simply to copy the contents of the DVD to the hard
drive, I don't need Dropbox for this; I can share over the LAN using
System Preferences' Sharing feature.
If you've successfully done this (viewed a DVD from another Mac)
using Dropbox, what steps did you take?
Thanks,
Dave

One way to view a DVD from a different Mac might be to use DVD sharing, like the Macbook Air does...

Using OS X's disc sharing capabilities to share a DVD movie disc,
neither the MB Air nor mini are supported:
"MacBook Air and Mac mini do not support playing DVD movies or audio
CD media with Remote Disc. ... To play DVD movies, audio CD media, or
copy-protected discs on the MacBook Air or Mac mini, use the MacBook
Air SuperDrive."

If you click on a folder containing files, I don't see any way to increase the font size in that folder. It seems to be about what fonts the user does not create. Tiitles on task bars etc.

This might've changed with more recent versions of OS X, but Finder > View

don't know what you mean by task bars, though.

Hi Otto,
I wasn't aware of that. I just looked at what sites were listed in the share option of iPhoto. I will try it out. Does this allow pictures added to Picasso to be synced back to iPhoto?
Thanks,

I don't know. I installed the app years ago but don't use it. I suspect it
might be one-way only (iPhoto -> Picasa Web). BTW it's "Picasa". ;)

I dug up my Unix for the Mac book circa 2003
Posted by: "Jim" oldtechie@wi.rr.com jimpurcell2001
Mon Apr 2, 2012 6:49 pm (PDT)
Unfortunately the stuff in chapter one must have changed. After setting the terminal name, it says to click the button at the bottom 'use settings as default. Thkere is the single word 'default' , wasn't sure whether that meant USE the already set defaults or what. I apparently does mean to set use my wettings as default, but it does' end there.
This is where things really change. It says click on file, but there is no such menu item in Terminal Settings. I'm supposed to create a file for the settings, but I can't. Now it does seem that that word default does set the defaults. At least some things I changed, lie Terminal Window name and window size.
I have to work really hard to match the book to this version of terminal.

Can I ask why you thought the manual for a 9 year old version of the operating system was the slightest bit relevant?
And can you try proof-reading your messages for typos, punctuation, spelling before sending?

Jim,
What do you want to do? Terminal works fine with the default settings
(although you might not like the font size and colour!).
If you want a reference, you need to use one that's more up to date. Try
<http://www.michael-hogg.co.uk/ > oros_x_terminal. php

Making an ebook question
Posted by: "HAL9000" jrswebhome@yahoo.com jrswebhome
Mon Apr 2, 2012 8:10 pm (PDT)
I have put together a story that appeared in the NYTimes several years ago from clipping the text and images from the web page. This is only for me and will never be used any other way.
I want to view this story and pictures as an ebook, that is to say, when I view the text I can change the text size like any other ebook. In addition, I want to view the images at their original resolution if possible, two finger scrolling to 100% if necessary.
Is this possible using an app like Calibre? Or is it even possible.
The complete file is now a RFTD file with images. I can make a pdf, but the dimensions are so large, I can't force the pdf to smaller dimensions, or can I from the app TextEdit?

I've used Calibre for years now and I don't believe it is capable of the
functions that you want.
Calibre is more of a cataloging and transfer program than a display
program, although it does have that capability.

Correct. If you make and move a *copy* in Finder, then that's OK. If you
move an original, it is lost from iPhoto and there will be a discrepancy in
the database. Exactly the same happens in iTunes.

Not over thinking, though I am often guilty that. In this case it's quite the opposite. I very large portion of what I delete, I simply need gone. Totally. No fuss, no muss. Delete and done. Why do in two steps what I know I want done in one? Frankly, it annoys me that Mac OSX finder has absolutely no ability to do this.
Graveyard is one of the simplest utilities I have. I LOVE simple utilities. Drop file on Graveyard, confirm (optional), and it's gone. I love that. Nothing else I've found (and I've looked far more than is healthy) does this.
BTW, 1802 Software makes several other equally simple, useful, and almost free utilities, mostly oriented towards media tasks.
Cheers,
