Thanks, Chris and Dan.

You can tell that I'm new to the App Store for the Mac! ;-)

As far as my progress, Lion did not show up in the App Store anywhere, including under 'Purchases.' I'm planning a visit to the (physical) Mac Store for another reason today anyway, so I'll see what I find out there as far as getting a backup of Lion.

Do you have either SuperDuper or CCC ? If so, my not just use that to make a clone of your system to an external drive, and use that as you recovery drive.

I actually have a SuperDuper backup of Lion from my iMac, Chris. I'm looking for something that will do an update to Snow Leopard on my MBP when I'm ready (when I've convinced myself that there's really nothing I need on it that doesn't run under Lion.) I would buy it, but I can't, and I think that if I have it on one computer I own, I should be able to install it on another anyway.

I know I could "recover" the iMac system on the MBP, but could I use SD to just install Lion on it? I don't want to wipe the contents of the MBP in order to do this.

Hi,

If you are going to send money to update from 10.6, why not just jump straight to 10.8 ? Really, it's working fine just here. it's not that different to lion, and as far as compatibility goes, lion and mountain lion are very similar.

The part of the answer is that I tend to be more of a dinosaur than an early adopter, Chris. :-)

I'm unconvinced that I like the tack Apple has taken with 10.8 but, in any event, I'll probably wait for at least another iteration of ML before jumping on board. In the meantime I would like to have the iMac and the MBP running the same system.

As I posted before, see the free utility Lion Diskmaker:

http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/

This enables you to make a DVD or a flash drive , SD card to boot from
and install Lion.

Works well!

You DO need the original Lion installer file.

That's the problem, Harry. The only version of Lion that I have is the one that came with the new iMac, and it does not have an installer...it's already installed. Guess if I want both machines to have the same system it will have to be Mountain Lion!

... And we al know what happened to the dinosaurs ....

Seriously, I would say the differences between 10.7 and 10.8 is a lot less than that to 10.6, so if you are going to upgrade, just jump straight to 10.8

Cheers Chris

I would bet that the 10.7.4 combo updater won't include the disk image file, but I'm downloading it as I type this.

Interesting enough!

I'm looking for a good mac burner that doesn't cost too much. I've a Mac OS X 10.4.11. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have 3 separate external drives of 2, 1.5 and 1 TB respectively. Installed ML onto one of them and no more problems. One of the group members was kind enough to suggest doing that as a test. Works great on that drive. Hardware isn't the issue then. I am really loathe to wipe the internal drive that's having the issue. My backups haven't included system files and the like, only the music, video and others that support my apps. Is there a list whereby I can copy the pertinent files and then move them back into the clean install one at a time to make sure they aren't corrupted?

People with much more knowledge than I should respond as well, but I must be misreading this statement. Your 1 to many seconds "freezes" could be PRECISELY the fault of a failing hard drive containing your operating system as the CPU attempts to fetch information from a drive that's having trouble providing it. Indeed, the fact that the OS installed on another drive works fine would make me worry MORE about my boot drive. My response wouldn't be to wipe it and reinstall onto it; my response would be to copy the information that's on it that I need before it becomes truly unreadable.

Earlier today I used Onyx to clear my browser and user caches.

Ever since then I'm having a HUGE issue with SLOWNESS. Every window, every application, every EVERYTHING is taking ages and ages to open.

Is this because the computer has to sort of "rebuild" the files each time I open something new?

Plus I'm getting a lot of "script errors."

I've never had this problem using Cache Out X

Running 10.6.8 on a 24" iMac, circa 2007.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
neelie

Forgive for I have sinned - I forgot to say which browser(s) I'm using.

The worst of the slowness is happening in Firefox 14.0.1, but Safari 5.1.7 is almost as slow.

If you can find one, let us know. I can't. There were never any FW <-> USB
2 adapters either, for technical reasons that also apply to FW <-> USB 3.
