Now that Reminders is an OS X app as well as an iOS app (even before that for the person who has both an iPhone and an iPad, it's possible for that person's electronic alter ego to be in two places simultaneously. Let's assume I set a reminder on my iPhone for when I get home; however, my iPad is at home. So, I would think that Notification Services would see that "I" (in my iPad guise) am at home and remind me right now.

Am I missing something? Is iCloud more intelligent than that? Shouldn't it specify which electronic gadget needs to be at the location specified to trigger the reminder?

I took the plunge and bought a new Macbook Pro Retina. It's a gorgeous machine, very fast, love the keyboard, etc etc.

BUT my HP LaserJet M1217nfw doesn't work with it. I spent a few hours online trying to figure out how to make it work, and then more than an hour on the phone with Apple support, and no luck.

So I'm shopping for a new printer. I can still use this one with my older Macbook Pro, so it's not a big deal. Would rather not spend the money, but so it goes…

What I want is a black and white laser printer that will make photocopies too. And it absolutely HAS to work with OS 10.8.1!

Any suggestions? BTW, I have a Brother printer that I hate, so am unlikely to go with Brother. And am so disappointed in the lack of customer service from HP that although I really like this printer, I think I'll stay away from them, too.

Thanks for any and all help!

Patti

Yes, been there, done that. Can't make the download work because I have to be able to get into the printer utility and it's just not there.

This Apple page has a comprehensive list of Mountain Lion compatible printers:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669

If you don't like HP (and there are plenty of reasons not to like them) and you don't like Brother, you are going to have a hard time finding a really good laser printer from a company that is going to strongly support the Macintosh, especially in the price range and with the features you are likely looking for.

For multi-function laser printers, my preference is for Brothers:
http://www.brother-usa.com/MFC/#.UFhGSY61NUA

I've heard that the Brother DCP-7065DN
http://www.brother-usa.com/MFC/ModelDetail.aspx?ProductID=DCP7065DN#.UFhINY61NUA
is a dynamite unit, and it is currently on sale on Amazon for only $100 plus free shipping:

Howdy.

Patti, the HP driver download link that Jim S responded with should
work fine.

You access this HP driver download link with your web browser and not
via the Print panel in System Preferences.

This HP driver info says that your printer should work fine with:

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Download the driver installer file to your computer via Safari.

Then install it.

Usually after installing a printer driver you don't have to restart the
Mac but it wouldn't hurt to restart and might help.

Yes, I KNOW it SAYS that it should work fine. I've been to that link and downloaded the software.

I've restarted the computer, unplugged, turned off the printer, and re-connected it to the computer.

The computer "sees" the printer - when I open Print and Scan in System Prefs, the printer shows up on the list. And when it was turned off, the computer knew that it was offline.

But I've clicked "print" for several different types of documents including this email, and they aren't printing, and they're not showing up in the printer queue either.

Here are some of the instructions from the HP website: the problem is that my menu doesn't contain AirPrint anywhere. And at the beginning of the instructions, it says that the only way to use this printer with Mountain Lion is to use AirPrint. I have Generic PCL Printer on the list, and then lots of printer manufacturer's software, but no AirPrint.

Now what?

I think that the problem is that when I go to add the printer, it sees this HP printer and under kind it says USB. It needs to say Bonjour for it to work.

Patti

Click the Use box, and then select AirPrint from the pop-up menu if it is not selected already.

Hello all,
I hope I am doing this right this time. I am sorry for hijacking a subject but I have not posted much in any groups over the years- but this one seems to be helpful and I hope you can help me.

I migrated my 2008 macbook pro to the new retina display macbook. None of my emails will allow me to send. This is it - the one I am sending this from. I just got this email approved so I could send this.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling, I have checked all settings. I am an experienced tech user and know about passwords. I did the connection doctor and it says all but 2 are okay. The 2 that are not okay show green for mail.optimum.net but not for smtp.
They all say they are okay but as soon as I try to send an email, none of them work. They says that they are offline.

What have I done? I have tried all that I know but I am out of ideas.

It is not passwords.

They all have the correct settings. I can't even mail out of my cloud account- if I went online via the "cloud" I could but I can't from my mail program. This email is the only one that works. This account is new and I made it after I started using this computer. All other emails were migrated.

I am thinking it my have something to do with a library file- but I could be totally wrong.
I hope you can help- I need these emails to work for me.

thank you ahead for anything!

SystemPrefs/Network, tell us what this panel says.
Apple Mail/Preferences/Accounts, tell us everything
except your password. DO NOT tell us your password.
Who is your ISP? The people you pay for internet access at home?

Also, SystemPrefs/Security/Firewall, is the firewall turned on or off?

Your computer is very new - when did you get it? If it's under 90 days old, you can call Apple for help.

Call 1-800-myapple

they will do their best to help you get things working.

I'm grateful for the helpful answers to my questions about sharing files between the MacBook Air and my two other computers.

Jim, you asked what kind of files I want to share, and did I want to share remotely, or when the three computers are in the same location. My immediate need is to share within the house, but as I'm going to be in Toronto for the month of October, it would be convenient to share remotely — is that going to be difficult? Thanks for pointing me to AirDrop for within-the-house sharing. I'll investigate it, because it seems that would handle a lot of my needs.

Dan, I was intrigued by your suggestion that I should rename each Mac and rename each of the hard drives on each Mac so it tells me which Mac it's on. I have always had different names for the boot drives of my computers of course, but you're right, for the external drives it's a good idea to rename them so they're clearly identified with the master drive. Fortunately I've never been tempted to keep the generic Macintosh HD on anything.

Thanks for the rest of your practical advice about File Sharing. I've been remiss in not investigating this properly. And I never considered using the same admin password for the three computers! And the alias idea is one I'd never heard of. Thanks for your willingness to endure further questions if necessary.

To Adrie in the Netherlands, thanks for your advice to use Dropbox. I do have an Airport Express but not with a hard disk connected. I would welcome any further information on this.

Again, thanks to all. I've been reading you for years. This is a great group.

Howdy.

Rick, browse to MacUpdates web site and do a search on variants of

Time
time and material
time tracking
job tracking

You'll need to take a look at some of the results to see if an app can
do what you want.

Also look at the commercial program called Clients and Profits.

<http://clientsandprofits.com>

Clients and Profits is aimed at people who do creative work who need to
track time spent on projects and track materials and other things.

Clients and Profits had a big user base with Macintosh users in
advertising, marketing, design, but Clients and Profits did not make a
graceful transition from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X and lost a lot of its
users.

But take a look at Clients and Profits because they may have fixed the
transitional problems by now. Clients and Projects might be overkill
for your needs and it can be a bit expensive.

You might look at C&P's Job Tracker for something less comprehensive.

Check On The Job from <http://mac.appstorm.net>

You can also do your own time and material tracking database in a
program like FileMaker Pro or its little brother Bento.

I made my own consulting relational database in FileMaker years ago.
It tracks clients contact info, appointment dates with time tracking
and whether by phone, in person, or other, materials, travel time and
mileage rates for taxes, taxable items, things done onsite, invoicing,
reminder letters, and notes and even directions to a client location
and/or other info and even graphics and images if needed.
