Howdy.
I understand the possibilities with PDF and have the Apple iPad manual
in PDF on my iPad but if a non DRM epub book were saved as a PDF when
it is opened in iBooks would it have the same features, the same
abilities, and the same interactive capabilities as a regular epub book
in iBooks?
In other words, what functionality might be lost be saving as pdf and
then reading in iBooks?

Dan,
There's something I'm missing here: why do you want to read an epub book
with the Kindle app when you have the iBooks app? Is this a test for
someone who has a Kindle?
iBooks uses the epub format; just about any reader *except* Kindle can read
epub.
Kindle uses KF8 and AZW.
AFAIK Calibre can convert any non-protected format to another.
Here's a list of ebook formats:-

Dan,
This is the opposite of what you asked in the OP. You need to convert the
Kindle (KF8 or AZW) file into epub or PDF so iBooks can read it. Calibre
should do this as long as the file is not DRM. Calibre is also an ebook
reader.

I'm a bit puzzled why ePub has overwhelmed pdf, to be honest. So many books still contain text that says "see figure 8 on page 27" or something akin to that, or are DESIGNED so that an image is adjacent to a particular column, and all that is decimated by the auto-reflow of ePub.
I get most of my Mac books via my SafariBooksOnline subscription. They've recently dropped pdf for ePub. I'm very disappointed.
I know there are advantages of ePub, but I think the losses exceed the gains for technical documents.
Just my opinion,

Aren't PDFs essentially "images" of printed pages, and therefore take a lot
of space? All of the ebook formats use less space than even plain text, as
well as providing formatting not available in plain text.

They can be like that, but do not have to be.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format
a PDF could be as compact as any ebook format, or could be a lot larger,
depending how it is produced..

So you're trying to go from a Kindle non-DRM book and read it in the iBooks app? Hmmm.... I read on my Kindle app so I really don't know.
The Kindle books are kept in the Docs > My Kindle Content folder. See if you can take a book out and put it into the iBooks folder and maybe sync your Mac with your iPad. ???? (The books are numbered, not titled, so it might not be easy to find one you want to move - I have hundreds of books.) The books each have between 1 and 3 files.
I don't have the iBook reader on my Mac or I'd do it and tell you if it works. (I really only use the Kindle.) I don't have Mountain Lion (later today!) either so I can't even do the iBook Lite yet.

After further assessment of what I want, I guess what I am looking for is a photo and text journal that I can document work photographically with text, include costs and materials too. I don't build for sale anymore. My health is too poor and I don't think I could do a project within a reasonable time anymore. My quality hasn't suffered, just my work speed.
Thanks to you and the other members who have responded. I appreciate it.

Guess that should have been 1:00PM EDT, not EST. I always get confused on that, although I know when to adjust the clock. LOL
