Yes but we loose YouTube and the HD viewing of YouTube videos, we loose the streetview on Maps and dont get the flyover view either. We loose the RetinaDisplay entirely. This is the worst upgrade ever.
Can we go back to 5.1?

I haven't read all the info everywhere but I haven't yet heard about
anything that I need or want. I don't care about Siri, pano-pix, improved
(or any) FB or other social botheration apps.
I may end up with iOS 6 if I go ahead and get a new Touch this fall --
haven't decided on that yet and it depends on how well my aging T2 holds
out; I already have a T4 that's doin' just fine, no plans to upgrade that
(or my phone or pad). Also considering the new Nano but want to wait & see
it live first.

Greetings,
Yesterday I considered the option of upgrading my recently-purchased iPod Touch 4g (came with iOS5.1.1) to iOS6 using WiFi, vs tethered to my WinXP/SP3 PC (the iPod's "home" computer). My iPod has worked fine so far when connected to a USB port on the front of the PC case. Transferring music files with iTunes has been flawless. Considering the good performance with this setup so far, I opted to run the upgrade using the PC, since I concluded that there would be less liklihood of a major failure if something bad happened during the install - at least I would still be tethered and would have some hope of getting out of a problem during upgrade, and the download speeds would probably be faster tethered than using WiFi.
I upgraded iTunes to the latest, rebooted the PC, and simply followed the prompts that came up when I plugged in my iPod that instructed me as to what to do to upgrade to iOS6. It failed! My iPod was DEAD! It would only display an iTunes and USB plug icon on the iPod display, and after about 5 to 10 minutes of iTunes on the PC indicating, "Preparing the iPod for update..." (or some such similar status), it would time out and give me either an error 1602 or 1604. Looking at the Apple help pages at those error numbers, I followed the recommendation to unplug all other devices from the USB ports, reboot the PC and try again. I tried a different USB->iPhone cable, and both ports on the front of the PC (that have always worked flawlessly for anything else I plugged into them, including USB-powered external hard disks).
I implemented a service call to Apple through their web page, and was pleasantly shocked and surprised that after about 30 seconds from filling in and submitting the help-request form, my telephone rang and it was John from Apple. He did passed ma along to one of the technical experts, Eric, and Eric told me that this is a known problem with some older desktop PCs. He guessed that the problem is that some USB ports are a little under-powered (especially on the front panel of some PCs). I tried a port on the back of my PC, and IT WORKED! The upgrade to iOS6 proceeded as normal when I tried it again, and I was able to restore all apps and data.
Eric indicated that recently-produced PCs should work fine (regardless of operating system) since most recent PCs provide better power to their USB ports. He did not think this was a problem specifically with WindowsXP, but with the older hardware.
I asked Eric if it might be more reliable, considering my problems, to just upgrade by downloading the upgrade directly to the iPod via WiFi, and he agreed that this is probably the most reliable way to do it. I'll follow that advice in the future.
I hope this helps some of you who are considering the upgrade.

Because I am considering an iPhone come February, I would like to know
if the 2 named devices are similar aside from the phone functionality. I
have the Touch 4th gen model and do not believe I would be duplicating
the functions even if I get the newest iPhone as I see using both for
very different purposes..

The iPod touch is pretty much an iPhone without the phone.
When you get the iPhone 5, your iPod touch will be redundant.

The iphone has better cameras, and GPS. Other than that the touch is the same as the iphone minus the phone.
