The link I provided previously links to reset instructions for the newer systems without disks.

Frank.

Here is a quote of your original post.

" In order to change a Password, when the original password cannot be
located, does
anyone know how to do this?

I could years ago, but who knows now."

You do not mention which password you want to change.

I have several dozen passwords.

I can help with changing a user account password, with finding
passwords stored in Key Chain Access, and perhaps with other passwords
but need to know which one you refer to.

This all came about from a computer owned by some else.

MBP without almost anything that would work. The owner in the Sys Pref was all that was left.

No password to let me get in to change anything.

Took a while but finally got it right.

Everyone should have a bootable installation disc and everyone can!

If you purchase(d) OSX from the App Store, here's how...

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07/how-to-create-a-bootable-backup-mountain-lion-install-disk/

If you have already installed, you can download the OSX again, for free, using the same Apple ID. Go to "Purchases" in the App Store. The Purchases button is on the top bar.

If you have a Mac system that did not come with a disc, there is a similar "trick" to get the installer for your specific system...

http://derflounder.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/downloading-lion-os-installers-for-your-specific-mac-model/

This version will work only with that specific machine. If you have more than one Mac, save yourself a bit of grief and buy the retail version of Mt. Lion from the App Store for $20 and make a disc that way. The retail version will work with any machine, so you'll only have to do this once for all your machines. Probably worth the $20.

If you have a slow connection, it will take a while for a large download to
show any progress. I think 10.8 is around 4.4 GB. At 1 Mbps this should
take about 10 hours. Just how slow is your DSL?

Not sure why these reported backup times are so fast, but it takes over 10 minutes just for my Mac to do the first step, which is Repair Permissions. I haven't timed it recently but I remember the full incremental backup time on my computer as being over 45 minutes. That's using SuperDuper on a 500GB drive.

SD allows you to do a Smart Incremental backup so your backup drive is an exact clone, and it usually takes me no more than 10 minutes. You can still make it a bootable drive, with ACLs, etc. I have booted from my cloned backup drives to test it and they work the same as booting from the original. I have my computer set to do an automatic, smart, incremental backups of both my OS/Apps drive and my Data drive every night at 1:30AM. Before I go to bed, I log out, and log back in while holding down the shift key. This prevents certain apps from loading and helps insure an exact duplicate (according to SuperDuper.

Mike,

Repair permissions will vary with processor speed, RAM, etc. I have 16GB RAM and a 240GB SSD in my computer, so that probably helps. A typical smart incremental backup of my SSD boot drive (OSX and programs) takes about 10-12 minutes total, including permission repair.

********************

Jim....

I emailed David Nanian at Shirt Pocket. Below is my question and his "succinct" response...

Lou

********************

My email to David Nanian:

"I have a question about SuperDuper. I'm on 10.7.4 and everything seems to be working fine. I went to check the latest backup today and my Mac's "Get Info" shows my backup drive "modified date" is July 20th. I do an automatic, incremental smart backup every night, and SD shows that my backups completed successfully. I've also looked at my backup and have verified that files created yesterday were successfully copied to my backup drive. So, SD is doing it's job.

But why does "Get Info" show a date that is a month old? Shouldn't it reflect last night's read/write activity performed by SD?? Does SD reset the bits, codes or something to indicate that the drive doesn't need a new backup?"

And David's answer...

That's something managed by Finder/OSX and can't be relied upon when copying files 'under' finder...

OUCH! They've had, what, 28 and 1/2 years to tweak the Finder to make it accurate!?

I posted this question on Shirt Pocket's discussion forum this morning. No answers there yet. It's really hard to conceive that an oddity this obvious wouldn't have been dealt with in all this time.

Jim,

David Nanian wasn't exactly verbose on the subject, so it is hard to know exactly what he meant or what the "problem" is.

Just for yuks, I manually copied a file to my OSX backup drive to see if it changed the modified date. Finder accurately shows the modified time and date. Interestingly, my backup drive asked me for my admin password to simply copy a small PNG file (I only use SuperDuper, not Time Machine). So, perhaps the drive is locked to "normal" operations. Or maybe it has to do with the fact that it is a SD backup and does things differently?? Beats me, but if files are moved manually, Finder reports the modification date and time just fine.

I just check the SD backup log occasionally to make sure everything is working.

MBP SSD

Looking additional RAM, Perhaps as much as it will hold.

There are many outfits that sell RAM for the Mac and I have not contacted at this point I could use some help from those on this list.

Some time ago, I visited the Apple Store Genius Bar with a memory problem. They recommended "Crucial" as a memory supplier. Crucial.com is the retail arm of Micron Technology, who supplies a lot of Mac memory to Apple.

Crucial memory might cost a few pennies more, but it is very reliable.

Mac users, contact: http://www.crucial.com/apple/

Since you don't specify which Macbook Pro, the answer is "It depends."

Prior to this year's Retina Macbook Pro, every MBP that could come with an SSD came with replaceable RAM in easily accessible slots.

The 2012 Retina MBP has non-upgradeable RAM.

When I have gone to upgrade my RAM in the past, I have always gone here:
<http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/>

For future reference, when you post questions like this, go to:
Apple Menu -- About This Mac -- More Info -- System Report -- Hardware
and include information like Model Identifier, Processor Speed, and Memory.
Hard drive size wouldn't hurt, either.

Thanks, I checked out there site, it looks like a good one.

The Mac is a MBP SSD 10.8.1 Core i7 with 4GB. Installation should be easy.

Gijzette, the link you gave about the power line adapters didn't work. Could you check it? I will be upgrading my TV to HD sometime soon and wanted to get Apple TV and look at movies in my living room that is about 75 feet away from my router (our house goes sideways rather than up) so I know the signal won't be good enough. Your power adapter solution seems like it would work for me, when I get around to making all those changes.

Joan
