How much RAM? I'm wondering if the "hibernation" and "swap" files could be the culprit. These would be the two largest temp files with one the size of your RAM and the other twice that size. [experts please correct if I have this wrong]
So if you have 8GB of RAM, the two files would total slightly more than 24GB, and there are other temp files. This may expain the before and after boot space question, though it should not result in locking up.
Unless you have 16GB of RAM and are running many, many apps, or maybe running Windows apps in a virtual machine (which may create additional swap files). If your running this kind of system, you'll need more than 100GB free.
Cheers,

I am considering updating from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and need to know if the 3D Graphics software from Nevercenter named SILO is compatible with Mountain LIon. Does anyone know? I have looked on several lists of compatible and non-compatible programs for ML, but haven't found SILO. Thank you.

It appears that the developers think that it is:
http://www.nevercen
However, you can ask them to be sure:
info@nevercenter.
