I have one old G4 computer that I must maintain because it controls a SCSI based scanner. As I have migrated to newer computers in the rest of my studio I have lost the ability to communicate with the G4 over ethernet.
Now I cannot get to it or from it to any other computer in my studio.
the other machines on the network are; 2 G5's running OS 10.5.8 and a
Macbook pro running 10.6.8.
These all speak to each other over the network just fine as well as an Epson 9900 printer.
I have been told there should be no problem, but there is.
Is there some bit of networking software I don't have or some setting that will fix this. the G4 was able to speak to another G4 running 10.3.x with no problem.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Howdy.

The main thing is to be sure that the Mac OS 9 Control Panel > Sharing
has the TCP/IP check box checked on.

You might also need to take a look at the TCP/IP Control Panel to be
sure Connect via Ethernet is turned on.

That should let OS X and OS 9 communicate.

What I'm not sure about is whether you can connect via IP addressing or
if there could be a problem with a newer Mac OS X computer running an
OS X system that has AppleTalk all removed and discontinued.

However, you should be able to also share via IP addressing and a
static IP address assigned to the Mac OS 9 computer.

I haven't used Mac OS 9 for 10 years now so I'm doing this from memory.

Time to get a new scanner J.Z. It would be MUCH faster, have MUCH
higher resolution, would be MUCH cheaper than your SCSI scanner, and
work on your Mac OS X machines.

Thanks Dan for your help.

It looks like following your instructions I created the workflow
described in the link I provided.

I run it and it finds 209 items (email messages) and changes the "/"
character to a "-".

Then I run it again and it finds the same 209 items (I opened the
last one shown in "results" and confirm that it is the same item).

It seems like Automator isn't actually replacing the text (otherwise
how could it find the same text again?).

Any ideas why this is happening?

And I'm a bit surprised that out of (roughly estimating) 750,000
archived messages only 209 had these characters in the subject line.
Possible, but probable...?

Thanks,
Dave

Howdy.

I'm going to be out of town from Friday to late Sunday.

Surely not even the Library of Congress doesn't need to archive 750,00
email messages?????

A double negative. That's what I get for being snarky.

I have started the tedious work of putting back the files one by one and entering my main password every time. Many of the photos have 2 or 3 files that are of different sizes - don't know why - am selecting the one with the size I want. I have the files arranged by Kind and most appear to be jpegs, some of which are from slideshows I have made from travel photos. I've dealt with most of the documents. Of course I have backups but these files are scattered all over the place so cannot be located easily. Many seem to be put back into the iPhoto Masters folders. Many of my iPhoto files have been transferred to Aperture which I now mainly use but I don't know if they are safe there from this Trash problem and there's no way to test it by deleting just a few files from the Trash. So I'm playing safe and working one by one. Doing some every day will take me weeks but at least I've learnt something!

thanks, Pat. i had my iPhone 5 shipped to me, and it was supposed to be here two days ago.
i wasted 2 days, because they kept changing the delivery date.
this pdf will help out a lot, i am sure, when the dang thing finally gets here.
