Howdy.
I've been waiting for months to purchase book 6 via iBooks (for my iPad) of David Weber's terrifically fun Safehold series. Book title is "Midst Toil And Tribulation. "
I just got the book and saw a note by the author that he requested the book be sold without DRM copy protection.
My question is, is it possible to read this non DRM digital book on my Mac desktop or on an Android tablet (if I had one), or on the Kindle app on the iPad, or, would it be possible to read it on TV via a Sony Playstation or Apple TV???

It all depends on the format of the book, but in general, yes. If the book is MP3 or AAC then almost certainly yes. If it's another format it depends on whether that platform has a player for that format.
The same is true for e-books. If the format is one that there's a reader for on that platform the you can read it.
In both cases if the format is not one that the platform in question has a reader for there are conversion programs to deal with that so the answer is probably still yes.
More but not as related: The Kindle app will read any book in .mobi format. There are also a couple of other formats it will read. If it's in another format there's a freeware program called Calibre that will convert pretty much any format to .mobi format. It does a very good job with epub and other common formats. It's a bit iffy sometimes with PDF or HTML but it'll do a reasonably good job most of the time.
Some PDF files are made of scans instead of text and those can't be easily converted although they can be read as they are in PDF readers. Converting them requires you to use OCR software and then do extensive proofing. OCR software, if it's any good, is about 95% accurate and that other 5% can get pretty weird. :)
Some of this info is from a friend in another group but I understand it as I am a huge e-book reader. - Hope this helps.

Howdy.
Thanks for your note. I sort of knew some of what you wrote about but
as of yet don't have much specific experience with it.
I've downloaded and looked at Calibre for I think the first couple of
things I experimented on were DRM and it therefore didn't work.
The standard Apple iBooks store books are in the epub format.
So I have this new book today, it's in epub format, no DRM, how would I
get it from the iPad book backup folder done via iTunes to something /
some place, where it could be read by the Kindle reader app on the
iPad??
Sorry to seem dense on this topic but it seems like maybe it's
deliberately made confusing by Apple and other digital book publishers.

If I remember correctly - it's been a couple years - I was successful making a pdf out of it and emailing it to myself. Then it should ask you where you want to open it. Are you talking about moving stuff around within the iPad?

Actually - checking it out - that can't have been right - I'm in the Apple Book shelf on iPad and I see no way to create a pdf or to move anything anywhere off the bookshelf - within the bookshelf yes, but not convert from epub to pdf file (which can be emailed).
Sorry -

Howdy.
That's exactly what I am doing.
My goal with this post and questions is to learn more about DRM and the
possibilities of digital books.
For example, so far, I've tried the Kindle app, the Apple iBooks app,
the Nook app, and the Playback or Playbook app from Google and without
a doubt I prefer the Apple iBooks app for it's better text quality on
the iPad screen, for better features, easier to use, and for being able
to access the Apple iBooks store from the app itself.
So If I do buy a Kindle non DRM book I'd like to read it in the iBooks
app. I'm just doing some learning.

Howdy.
Bekah, I think I'm learning here. I'd like to figure out how to get a
Kindle non DRM book into the Apple iBooks app for reading since I
prefer the quality of text and features in iBooks to Kindle app (and
much better than the Nook app).

Apple stock briefly hit $701.44 USD on the NASDAQ today and then dipped back to a current $698.00.
Does anyone have any sense or thoughts that the stock might be split?

Sorry if you tried the directly from HP download and I missed that.
You only mentioned using the Print & Scan panel.
Try this:
A. Reset of the Printing System.
This often fixes problems with printing.
1. Open Print & Scan panel in Sys Prefs.
2. Do a right click (or Control left click) in the left Printers pane.
3. Choose the Reset Printing System command that appears.
No printer drivers are deleted doing this routine procedure.
However, your print queues will all disappear from the Printers list
pane. They are supposed to disappear. These are print queues linked
to a printer driver.
Doing the reset does other things under the hood.
After doing the Reset command, you will need to add your printers
back. If you have a USB connected printer, it should add itself
automatically. If you have an Ethernet connected printer, use the
plus/add button and find the PPD/driver file for or see if it appears
in the list. Sometimes you may need to reset the Mac after doing the
Reset command in order for a USB connected printer to appear
automatically
If "A" doesn't work (Reset), then do the usual 3 suspects and:
B. Round up the 3 usual suspects (yeah, I stole the line from
Casablanca).
1. run the Repair Permissions command in Disk Utility.
2. Boot into Safe Disk Mode (press Shift during boot).
3. Use a utility like OnyX (it's free) and use it to delete every
cache file you can find listed in OnyX.
Good luck.

Thanks for that. I've done everything except the clean caches with OnyX.
Here's the problem - the documentation states clearly (if you read the fine print, lol!) that the printer will only work as an AirPrint printer, not with USB.
I found this nifty video at the HP website that explains how to set a printer up to do E Print. At one point in the video it says to open printer utility - you get there by clicking printer setup in the system prefs/print&scan window. This is what it's supposed to look like. sorry about the huge size - I don't know how to make it smaller.
But this is what mine looks like - there's no printer utility available:
So I can't find a way to finish the steps in the video (link here-this part is about 3 minutes into the video: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadInst?swfsequence=1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=219&product=4075472&softwareitem=bi-95171-4&sw_lang=
thanks for the help. After doing everything except the OnyX it still isn't working. I added the printer back, the computer "sees" it, but no printing in the print queue.

Thanks for the suggestions. I suspect that the Mailbox font is wrong on my Mac. Problem is that I do not have that item under Fonts & Colors!

P.S. I am off-line more than I am on-line due to failure to wake from sleep / failure to boot problems w/ my Mac Pro. I try to reply as soon as I get online.

Hi,
My iMac (OS X 10.8.1) has trouble restarting.
I used to have a lot of stuff on the hard drive, but have moved most of it to external drives.
On restarting, it just hangs.
I have to do Cmd R and reinstall the system. Which takes about 40 minutes. Doesn't happen every time, but it happens a lot.
I ran disk utility and repaired the disk and permissions.
Is there a way to erase the disk and reinstall the operating system. Or, would you suggest first trying to do Cmd. R and restore from a time machine backup?
Thanks,
Brett
