Yeah, that's what my brother's former employer and IT department thought. They daisy-chained about 8 power strips, each with a circuit breaker. The one time I visited him I had to pass a stack of computers and monitors, stacked like cord wood. All fried.
He had warned them not to do it, but they told him to mind his own business. About half of the actuarial department was down while they went and purchased new computers and rebuilt the docs on each computer. Took week and a half to get everyone back to work. It would have been cheaper to bring in a pair of electricians on overtime to wire it properly when they rearranged the deck chairs.

I use a surge protector-power-strip on the top shelf, plugged into a similar
thing on the bottom shelf. I've had various external drives & USB hubs
plugged into them as well as my router & DSL modem. Not that many, though,
as each can only hold about 4, maybe 5 plugs due to the various brick sizes
& shapes.
My printers have their own circuit -- I got that put in long ago when I got
my first laser printer, an HPLJII that needed 8 amps all by itself and no
way it could share a circuit with two regular rooms with lamps & radio &
phone-machine & occasional hair-dryer etc. It's been very handy over the
years having that extra plug (4-outlet-type) available for temporary use
from time to time, as well as for the TV & DVR that are now beside the
printers (one of which replaced a tank-type copier machine).

Technically its an extension, a surge protector and a cord multiplier.
Since gadgets are such low amps, its not even risking a 15 amp out let's
capacity to plug in a lot of devices to Squids or Spiders.

It depends upon the external drive.
I have a Drobo, that goes to sleep when not used for a period of time, even if the Mac is in use. It acts unresponsive when later called upon, but finally wake up. I believe there is a setting in the Drobo software, but not on the Mac.
Tell us which iMac you have, the OS, and about the external drive. Someone here might be able to help with that info.

I have not read all of the replies in this post but...
I use an iPhone 4 and Yahoo groups without the problem you describe. I briefly looked at my Safari settings and the only ones that I can see that might possibly have an impact are
1. accept cookies from visited.
2. search engine is Yahoo
3. under advanced, my web inspector is off. I don't know what that is.

JR, something on your iPhone, probably in the Safari settings is wrong. You're using a web browser to access a web page. No one else is having a problem, so it must be settings on your iPhone.
I can get to groups.yahoo.com. I can get to the sign-in screen, but I don't have an account, so I can not go further. I have tried this on both my 3GS and 4S, with success.
Check if Settings/ Safari/ JavaScript is on. If that does not clear it then try Clear Cookies and Data.

I have tried to get a solution on other groups.
Here is a problem I can't solve:
I want to surf Safari app on my iPhone4 and check my YahooGroups.
I DO NOT want to check mail or any digests, I can do that w Mail App.
I want to go direct to Yahoo Groups through Safari app.
Everyone tells me they have no problem going direct.
I question some of these comments.
If I open Safari app on the iPhone4 and try to surf to Yahoo Groups:
1. I am immediately asked to sign into Yahoo.
2. Then Yahoo tells me that my device is incompatible w Groups.
If others have no trouble, what setting do I have set differently?

Are you signing into YG with an ID that is authorized to view the group you
want to view?
More importantly, have you specifically authorized your iPhone with a yahoo?

Restored to new iPhone just now. I can surf to Groups in Safari.
Don't ask me why I had to do this. Thanks for your responses.

What does that mean, to "authorize an iPhone with a yahoo"?
My problem with Yahoo is that it periodically replaces its search engine as my default search engine in Safari, and also replaces my home page with its search page. Very irritating.
And I don't even use Yahoo except for this list.

Yes, syncing by USB cable.
I do not trust or believe in putting my personal stuff on anyone else's server. Not Apple's, not Dropbox's, not Google's, etcetera. I keep mine on my two iPhones and my two Macs. Home or away, I have access to it.
Syncing by WiFi and over the internet can be turned off. Great.
Thank you, Daly.

What sync do you mean? Between what devices, and what cable do you mean, USB? I don't think 1Password syncs to iCloud.
I keep the 1Password data file in DropBox and so it's always available to me on my computer and by using a browser anywhere.
As for synching to the 1Password app on the iPhone, yes - synching to DropBox and synching by WiFi can both be turned off in the app's preferences.

Was on a screen share with a senior advisor at iPhoto and had to put wood in my stove and he ended the session as I took too long! I am disabled from 3 major strokes from a GI bleed from Lyme disease! Thus was not fast enough when Apple puts me on hold for a lot longer as this 27 inch iMac is ever worse than my other 2 ! The second was replaced as the apps kept crashing and Apple could not fix it! Thus it was replaced with this gem! Sorry for negativity but not happy with that last person!!! Never had someone so egocentric and annoying! Now, they are saying they will take it in to check it out! I am hoping it can be fixed or replaced as I even asked another person at Applecare if Apple would buy it back so I could get a new lighter iMac!!! They were very nice and said since you have Applecare on this to wait and let them try to fix it!
Have a 20 inch iMac mid 2007, had 2 other 27 inch iMacs and now have this one and an iPad as well as an iPod touch and iPod nano! Thought about buying an iPhone but will wait for now anyway! :>-((( TY JK

Something must have changed in the most recent Mountain Lion update - I've developed a recurring problem that's got me thinking seriously about downgrading back to 10.7.
I'm on a 3.2 GHz quadcore Intel Xeon system, with 16 GB of RAM, and since the last update a process called "Mingler" (which is part of sync services) has started eating RAM. I'll have 10 GB of free RAM, and Mingler will start up and gradually consume all the free RAM until I get the "You're out of system memory, you must force quite an application" message. The only two fixes are to either reboot, or to force quit Mingler and reset sync services. It appears to be getting more and more frequent, too; used to it'd happen about once a week, then pretty much once a day, and now I go away for an hour and comeback to the "Out of system memory" message.
Any ideas what I can do to fix this?
