The conversation is wandering over related topics. I do erase or repartition drives I wish to completely clear. Unrelated to my need for true delete.
Why I delete with Graveyard rather than using Trash:
Graveyard allows me to do in one step, rather than two, something I do many times a day - delete files specifically to clear space.
Further, because I use Graveyard, I do not have to empty my Trash many times a day. This permits Trash to do what it was designed to do - protect me from mistakes when casually deleting files.
I use Graveyard only when I am confident that I want to delete a file AND clear the space. I use Trash for everything else. I keep my Trash for a long time. If anyone was following the threads on how Time Machine backs up, and the potential "holes" in TM backups, one can see that allowing Trash accumulate for a significant period of time adds an extra layer of "undelete" protection.
Cheers,
tod

When I checked Software Update from my Mac Pro, I was told my software was already up to date. So, I followed the link to Apple's support site in your email and downloaded the .dmg file. When I tried to open it in the Finder, up came an alert dialog I've NEVER seen before, with the following text:
> There may be a problem with this disk image. Are you sure you want to open it?

So, I opened Java Preferences, which told me I'd need to install a Java Runtime, and it downloaded and installed Java SE 6 1.6.0_31-b04-413 (without scaring me first).
It's possible I've used the Java applets I need in my medical practice exclusively from the Windows VM on my Mac Pro since installing Lion (the Java applets sometimes have problems with my two-monitor setup when painting windows on the screen, and the encapsulated environment of the VM shields the applets from figuring out two-monitor screen real estate).
Still, I'd never seen this warning dialog from prior versions of the Mac OS when updating Java. Has anyone else seen it?
Thanks,
Jim Robertson

Thank you, Otto!
I don't read every post or issue of the digest, and I often scan lightly
rather than paying close attention. I thought, looks like mistakenly, that
I'd seen a mention of what wiping a drive really does.
BTW, I owe whomever it was that described the imperfect tracing of a data
track with an erasing track as analogous to driving a tire perfectly
congruent its earlier track in snow or mud.
As a former analog silver-halide-based photographer, I learned that perfect
edges are not attainable, no matter how fine the silver grains are. The
reasons are 1, no matter what the nominal grain size (fine/low ISO, or
coarse/high ISO) grains aren't all exactly the same size; and 2, if a
single photon hits and activates a single grain, that energy bump often
bumps and activates one or more adjacent grains that weren't hit by the
photon. I thought this idea might help clarify things a little better than
the tire track. Glad you liked it.
As to relying on erased Trash for secure removal, vs. UNIX "rm" commands in
Terminal, it's the same issue of erasing with a tool that follows the
recording track more-or-less exactly. The main difference with rm commands
is that they're instant and not reversible. rm-d stuff is almost-guaranteed
to be gone forever, unless those infinite bucks are available to attempt
recovering the bits of fuzz. Trash commands are reversible for a while,
depending on what's being recorded on the drive, and whether it overwrites
the tracks freed by Empty Trash. This is probably because the Apple's "do
no harm" ethic attempts to give the user an undo option for a while,
but UNIX is heartless.
Regards,
Peter

Re: Streaming video with VLC?

It turned out to be much simpler than I thought:
Insert the DVD in the old mini. Quit any DVD player that wants to start.
(Make sure you've got the user name & password for the old mini.)
Open VLC on the new mini.
Choose File > "Open Disc...".
Choose the Disc tab, click on "VIDEO_TS Folder" button, click the
"browse" button, and navigate to the old mini.
Click "Connect as..." and enter user name & password for the old mini.
Open the DVD disc and choose the "VIDEO_TS" folder.
Click the Open button.
It plays! As if it were in a local DVD drive.
It's a little bandwidth sensitive, but not terribly. I can't download
large files without VLC "hiccuping" or closing the window, but
otherwise it's like I have a DVD drive in the new mini...
Thanks for "listening"...

That's good to know.
Of course, DVD bit-rates are high by the standards of networks of just a
few years ago. Is this via wifi

Howdy.
I've been trying a new service called Zing Zang. Should work with
iPhoto. Current a beta service but should become commercial.

Thanks. I'll check it out. I hate to toss out something that might
have value to someone.

Some people collect antique Macs and software. You might put it on
eBay, or go here:

Lots of folks in impoverished communities, the third world, etc.,
could use your old computer and old software. Contact one of these
and see if they would like a donation of your old software (you
should be able to get a nice tax deduction in return):
