Terry, you must have something in your system that is showing receipts for those other printers. I don't get updates for the printer that I have. I have never used Software Update to get upgrades for my HP printer.

When you install the operating system, a large number of printer drivers are installed by Apple. You can reduce the number by customizing the initial install. But you can see what you accepted by going to ~/Library/Printers/ and also Hard Drive/Library/Printers/
And yes, I think they install all those drivers in an effort to ensure that just about whatever printer you have, it will work immediately after installing the O.S. If you want to use the manufacturer's drivers, I think you have to delete Apple's, or start your printer from its utility icon.

Maybe someone knows a better way.

Anyway, I believe that if you delete Apple's version of your printer driver, Software Update will no longer offer to update it.

Terry,

I take it back. I just got a upgrade for my HP Printer, although my records show the last upgrade as back in 2007.

You wish. When it happened to me I did have a recent clone, so I then
restored my new hard drive. Apparently Micro$oft knows what hard
drive it was installed on and so it would not allow it.

Boy, can I relate to that situation, which I just went through with MS on a previous purchase of MS Win 7 to use with Parallels 8. I spent days on the phone with MS, but to no avail. Hopefully you will have better luck than me.

Not better yet, unfortunately. I got a guy yesterday who really really knew what he was doing, was quick - didn't have to look every single thing up - and he gave me 3 new product keys to use. Told me to uninstall and reinstall Office, and I did, but in the set up process where it should let you enter a product key, it just said that registration is no longer necessary, and then refused to run - again.

Oh well, think I may have a new solution. But I've been without Excel for 3 weeks now, and I'm treasurer of a 501c3 and it's time to do the annual tax return, and I need Excel to finish it.

Grrr….

Hello you might just want to use open office as its free and you can down load it from Cnet.com here is the link its just like Microsoft but you don't have to buy it or register it.
OpenOffice.org is the free alternative to Microsoft Office. Even on a
Mac, Open Office.org mostly feels and looks like a Windows application,
but Mac users should have no trouble getting up and running with this
multifeatured app. With Open Office, you can create the same
types of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations available in
Microsoft Office and even save them with the MS Office extensions such
as .doc or .ppt. OpenOffice.org also has its own file extensions, which
can't be opened with their Microsoft Office counterparts, so you'll need
to make sure you remember to save with the appropriate extension so MS
Office users can read them. This is made much easier with the
Preferences Panel, which lets you select the default file type for
documents you create

I thought the power key was for initial startup when new, and after that
only for *forced* shutdowns.

I use a "soft" shutdown: ctrl-option-command-eject (or Apple menu >
Shutdown).

I shut my macbook down every few days- should I leave it in sleep mode. I just get paranoid - thus, I shut it down thinking it will reboot in a happier mood.
What is best?
Thanks!!

I have a friend who has an Android and a new Mac and is in the market for a printer that is compatible with both the Mac and the Android. Any suggestions out there?

It seems, from what I've found thus far, there is no printer out there that is compatible with both Mac and Android, so unless someone can suggest a printer, I'm looking at work-arounds.

Do you think Evernote might do as a work-around?

What about Printershare? It appears to fit the bill.

If Al qaeda and the Taliban did not have such a lot of support outside Pakistan and Afghanistan, it would not have come to this.

I have a Mac laptop that has not been used in months. Now when I turn it on all I get is the apple logo and the circle that looks like it is trying to open but it never does.
Any idea what I should do?
