Thanks for the tip. I've never been able to get the "Remove Pin" option but touching the address bar "X" does the trick. Maybe it's because all my pins have been generated by searches.

If it is from the search of an address, you need to touch the "X" at the end of the address bar in the search to remove the address, which will remove the pin.

Hi all, I don't know what has happened to the sound when a message is sent. Arriving mail gives an audible signal but ... I have opened Mail>preferences and the box for "play sounds for other mail actions" is ticked but for the last week or so I get no "whoosh". Where else should I look?

Howdy.
1. The Recovery partition is only available in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
2. It's a normally invisible partition, created when you install Lion
or Mountain Lion, and with a special version of OS X installed on this
partition. It's for troubleshooting, re-installing the OS, doing a
Disk Utility repair, and more.
3. Two easy ways to boot from the recovery partition.
A. Restart and press Command and the "r" key. "r" for "recovery."
B. Restart and press the Option key and then use the arrow keys to
pick the Recovery partition system.
After booting into the Recovery OS X you can use Disk Utility to check
the HD and possibly repair problems. You can also just re-install the
OS without erasing the normal hard drive partition but I suggest
starting with Disk Utility.
After using something in Recovery partition, you just quit the program
and you should be presented with the option of picking the normal boot
partition to restart from.
Note for the future. After downloading Lion or Mountain Lion, you can
use a special disk image file that is part of the download and burn
your own Mac OS X Lion (or ML) boot/install DVD disc. You can download
the OS again, if you want, just to burn the DVD boot/install disc. How
to do this has been discussed here in many messages and you can do a
Yahoo or Google search for this and find instructions.
Good luck!

Obviously I'm not there to see it, but my guess is that your drive is
not spinning up, as it has not moved in many months. Boot from
another volume and see if you can see the drive in the Finder or even
from Disk Utility. My guess is that it is not to be found.

Thanks for the responses folks. Daly, I think you may be right.
I like to use OEM printer drivers since I do a lot of color managed high-end printing with custom printer profiles and always want consistency, full controls, all printer features, etc. I have my large format Canon printer set up with the Canon driver and print plugin. I thought I did with my Epson 1400 too, but I may have been mistaken. I'll explain.
Prior to updating, my Epson driver showed as an EPSON_Stylus_Photo_1400 driver version 8.67. I thought I recalled downloading it directly from Epson's website when I bought the printer. I went to the Epson website today and it said the Mountain Lion driver was available ONLY from Apple. I don't like to use Gutenberg printer drivers for any high end work, since they sometimes are generic and don't include all the features I want. What further confused me was that Software Update showed the driver version as 2.12, which of course was very different from the previous driver (v8.67) and increased my suspicion that this might be a Gutenberg printer driver. Well, since it appeared I had no choice in the matter, I backed up my system then installed the driver from System Update. Once done, it said I have driver version 9.00 installed, even though Software Update said it was v2.12.
All appears to be working fine and all the proper controls are intact. So, perhaps I had Apple drivers for this printer all along. I do NOT get notifications from Software Update for my Canon printer, and I can say with certainty that those are Canon drivers downloaded directly from the Canon website.
So, there it is. I have no idea where all these drivers are hidden, but would like to be able to inspect this stuff using Finder so I know what is going on before pulling the trigger. This time, it worked out fine. So, thanks for the responses.

A few months ago I wish I had known about holding down the power
button 10 seconds to force my iMac to shut down. In a panic I pulled
the cord more than once when my other tricks didn't work. I hope I
didn't do any major damage. Now I know and won't forget!
I restart my computer a couple of times a week to clear out whatever
is taking up RAM and not leaving me enough to work. The guilty
parties I'm aware of are related to Safari and Shockwave. When I quit
just Safari I get some of the RAM back. But I have to restart to get
it all back. And if I'm going to restart, I'd might as well shut down
overnight.
I just restarted yesterday, so I still have half my RAM and I can't
see much in Activity Monitor right now. But Safari Web Content is at
or near the top of RAM usage, and I don't even have a jigsaw puzzle
open yet!---And now that I've launched a puzzle, Director Shockwave
is taking up 1/3 of my CPU all by itself.

Patsy, RAM for your iMac is very cheap these days. You will be shocked at the speed and efficiency gain if you bump your RAM up (12 gigs here). I think the max is 16 but not sure. For the incredible boost in speed, RAM is very cheap. But it's just my opinion. At CDW I see 8 gig RAM sticks for about $50 each. I purchased sticks from CDW two years ago and have never had any issues. jr

I thought I had the maximum RAM for this model, but I just found this
for my iMac:

I'll consult my Mac guru who set up this computer for me. (He's in my
former city.)
I'm 99% retired, so run into major RAM limitations only rarely, and
can live with occasional restarts. But it would be nice to have more
RAM if it's possible.

The max RAM for an iMac7.1 is 6 GB (she has 4 GB).
The extra 2 GB would help, at least a little, but maybe not enough to be worthwhile.
Since she probably has two 2 GB sticks, she would have to get a 4 GB stick, and set one of the old 2 GB sticks aside.
Presently the cost for this is about $95:

If I use an Apple wireless aluminum keyboard with the 2006-vintage
Mini and hold down the T key, it enters TGM as expected.
If I plug in a new (this year's model) Apple USB extended keyboard
(model A1243) to this Mini and hold down the T key, it boots right
into the OS (10.6.8).
The USB keyboard, otherwise, seems functional.
Have I uncovered a "corner case" of incompatibility between these 2
Apple devices?
Or...?
I can't spare the wireless keyboard for this purpose. Need to
discover why the USB keyboard doesn't want to play nice...
Ideas?
Thanks,
Dave

Found the "Restart in TGM" button in System Preferences > Startup Disk pane.
Thanks,
Dave

I am starting to use the Mail program on my Macs due to getting fed up with Yahoo problems.
In my contacts I have several groups set up.
However, I can't figure out how to get the addresses of the members of a group into the address field in mail without starting to type each one individually. In other email programs I was able to just click on a group name and that would populate the address field.
I don't see a contact box or icon when composing a new message.
What do I need to do?
Thanks,
Bobby

A couple of approaches:
1) Click on the Addresses button on the Mail toolbar to bring up
Address Book. Highlight the desired group in Address Book and click
on the To button.
2) Start typing the name of the group in the To field in the email
you're composing, and the rest of the name will be filled in.

I have 2 partitions on the main boot drive. I want to delete the
first one (appears uppermost in the image in the Disk Utililty >
Partition pane.
Once the first one is removed, can I expand the second (lower)
partition to take over the now-free space without initializing &
restoring data?
Thanks,
Dave
