Rather than booting the CD by holding down the C-key there are at
least two other ways. Hold down the option key when booting is one.
The other is to go to your system preferences and change the boot
volume to the CD. One of those ways might work????

I think you are right in implying that Crucial believes the iso file is of a bootable disc.
>

I tried holding down the 'Option' key and restarting, and then holding down the 'D' key and restarting, and both times my MBPro started using my main drive. Yes, I have only one optical drive, although I do have USB optical drive that I purchased for my wife when I bought her a MacBook Air.
> Or reset the startup disc in Preferences and restart. Does it see the CD as an option?
No, it does not show the CD Drive as an option.
> Does the CD mount at all? Do you know if you can boot from this optical drive? You can test this by holding "c" while booting from your original installation disc (if you have one).
Yes, the CD does mount, and yes I can boot from my optical drive when I insert my original Snow Leopard disc.
Do not know where else to turn other than pressuring Crucial to come up with a fix.
Thanks for your help Todd.

I did put the iso file on a 16GB bootable flash drive I have, and can boot off it, but I cannot see the iso file on the disk.

I tried holding down the 'Option' key while booting, but to no avail, and when I opened system preferences I noticed that the CD Drive was not available as a boot drive.
Thanks for your help. Barry.

I am guessing the 3.4MB iso file you downloaded from critical does not have an OS on it, so it can not be selected as a boot disc.
Apparently you will have to boot from something else and then upgrade the firmware on your SSD drive. As in the past, you can not run from a drive and change its firmware.
Critical needs to give you corrected instructions. Have you checked out their site?

Looks to me that, regardless of what Crucial has told you, this is
not a bootable disc, at least not for your particular machine. I
would now do two more things. One is, assuming you have a bootable
external drive, to copy the files to it, boot from it, and run
whatever has to be run. The other is, if you have another machine,
which requires a different minimum or maximum OS, to see if it will
boot that machine. Another tack would be phoning Crucial and seeing
what they can tell you.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good wifi extender? I've moved a computer into my piano studio and evidently the ethernet port isn't working on the computer, so I'm going to have to use the Airport instead, but my wifi signal is terrible because the furnace is between the Dlink router and the studio.
So, I need to get a signal repeater or wifi extender. And they will need to set up without being connected to the computer, since the ethernet port isn't working.
The computer in question is a Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7.
Thanks much!

Why not just a simple AppleExpress?

That's one of the ones I looked at today online.
Here's a related question - I have wifi set up which reaches about 70% of my house. There's an ethernet cable that runs from the router into the basement of the 30% that really doesn't have wifi right now. Could I hook another router up to that ethernet cable and create wifi that way?

It's unsual for an ethernet port to stop working. Are you sure it's not the
cable? Have you tried another?

Oh - yes, I should have said - the first thing I did after having the ethernet port not work was to go to the router which is connected to my son's computer by ethernet cable, take the cable out of my son's computer and plug it into mine. I KNOW his cable is working, so it's definitely the port.
And the crazy thing is that I've never used the ethernet port in this computer before, ever. It's always been upstairs in my house where the only thing available is wifi.

Unfortunately, I have one of these HDs requiring replacement. <VBS> I have a 2TB AL-Pro External HD. 1TB is updated hourly by Time Machine. 1TB is updated manually as a clone of the internal HD, via Carbon Copy Cloner. I have 10.6.8 OS. Once the new HD is installed, and I run the install disks, will I be able to use the Clone as the Source and "clone" it to the new blank HD? Or do I need to reinstall all of the apps individually?
Apple told me today that I could repopulate the replacement hard drive from TM, but I thought TM basically copied the files, not the apps.
Trying to sort things out before the new HD is installed.
Thanks in advance for your advice and help,
Donna
