Having the display dimmed when we're focused on the computer is certainly annoying. Staying alert to "press any key" and prevent (or worse, fix) that, is disturbing and counterproductive. And that may happen during many activities, such as a) carefully reading a web page, book or documentation, b) following the progress of a software operation, c) doing a presentation, training or demonstration, d) on a conversation, taking notes between intervals.
Should I Sleep will revolutionize the way your computer enters sleep mode to save energy. It uses a combination of unique heuristic sensors to check if you are actually at the computer before it sleeps.
When the display is about to dim (due to keyboard and mouse inactivity), Should I Sleep will start its sensors. Camera, microphone all other software processing will stay on for only about 3 seconds. After that (and depending on your sensor preferences), sleep will be allowed or prevented. No need to touch any button.
A heuristic approach:
Currently available sensors are Face Detection, Camera Motion, Sound Activity and External Display. The combination of sensors means that sleep can be automatically prevented in any of the following situations:
* Someone is facing the computer
* A moving object is captured by the camera
* Someone is talking close to the computer
* An external display is plugged-in
Should I Sleep was developed with a modular, extensible approach. We believe that the best sleep prevention is done by analyzing as many environmental elements as possible. That's why we'll be actively adding more sensors in the near future.
For the sake of completeness, we have also added the old-style timed sleep prevention. You just choose a predefined time period for the computer to be kept awake. This mode also prevents screensavers.

Now the 9th app in the iNutrients series, iSodium lists the sodium content of more than 1,100 different food servings. This is provided as a means to assist in deciding which foods to eat. Broken down into seven Categories or as a complete, alphabetical list with search function, users can lookup and record their daily sodium intake.
Revere, Massachusetts - Indie developer James Hollender has just released the initial version of iSodium, an iOS Health & Fitness app that lists the sodium content of more than 1,100 different food servings is now the 9th app in the iNutrients series. Broken down into seven Categories or as a complete, alphabetical list with search function, users can lookup and record their daily sodium intake. This is a universal app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
If you are working towards healthy eating, knowing the amount of sodium in the foods available for consumption can be extremely helpful.

The iSodium app provides information about foods and how they are rated for content of sodium. This is provided as a means to assist in deciding which foods to eat. The food servings are rated from EXTREMELY LOW in cholesterol all the way up to EXTREMELY HIGH. The following colors help readily identify which is which:
* Black = Rated EXTREMELY HIGH in Sodium (> 1,000 mg)
* Dark Red = Rated VERY HIGH in Sodium (501 - 1,000 mg)
* Red = Rated HIGH in Sodium (401 - 500 mg)
* Orange = Rated MODERATELY HIGH in Sodium (301 - 400 mg)
* Yellow = Rated MODERATE in Sodium (201 - 300 mg)
* Light Green = Rated MODERATELY LOW in Sodium (141 - 200 mg)
* Green = Rated LOW in Sodium (51 - 140 mg)
* Cyan = Rated VERY LOW in Sodium (11 - 50 mg)
* White = Rated EXTREMELY LOW in Sodium (0 - 10 mg)
Essentially, the cooler the color, the lower the amount of Cholesterol, with white being the coolest color and black being the hottest (think burnt). There are eight tables listing food servings:

* USDA Food Group
* USDA Nutrient Database Number
This app now allows users to record their intake of the nutrient. The information is maintained for one year and is presented in reverse chronological order grouped by day, so the latest data is presented first in the list. Editing allows for: 1) changing the number of servings; 2) changing the date; and 3) deleting records.
Information is derived from the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference: Sodium Content of Selected Foods per Common Measure. There are currently over 1,100 different food servings included, searchable using more than 2,500 names (some foods are known by different names or how they are prepared, e.g., "Egg, Scrambled" and "Scrambled Egg"). A few these have as many as six searchable names.

New York based RoGame Software announces the release of BandMaster for Mac OS X, a phenomenal tool for improvising musicians. BandMaster creates a virtual backing band from songs created in the application's editor. It features unique looping options, a timeline editor, chorus-based time scale and transposition settings, chord analysis, a metronome mode and more. With BandMaster musicians have the ability to create a realistic practice session that for once takes the entire piece into account.

With BandMaster musicians have the ability to create a realistic practice session that for once takes the entire piece into account.
BandMaster consists of three main parts, a control strip with an array of playback controls, a timeline editor and a songform view. The timeline editor can be hidden to just display the song form and control strip. Song creation is template based. Included are six base groups with 26 templates containing various Blues forms, variations of the 32 measure AABA form and more. An additional 1100 song form templates based on common standards are available for download free of charge.
Song editing takes place in the chord grid view. Roots are assigned to selected beats via toolbar buttons and chord definitions (i.e. MAj7) via a popup menu. Similar to a traditional spreadsheet BandMaster's chord grid supports all common copy and paste as well drag and drop operations. Sections of songs can also be dragged between windows. Double-clicks select contiguous sections of identical chords and clicks in the number strip select along grid lines. BandMaster also includes a text based input tool as well as other mass edit tools like Replace and Transpose.
Macros are a unique feature in BandMaster that uses common building blocks like the IIm7-V7 chord progression for example to allow editing of entire groups of beats or measures. Progressions are based on the root of the first chord in a selection. Employing the IIm7-V7 macro on a group of 4 measures of Cmaj7 transforms it into Dm7 / G7 /. The same macro can also be applied to just one measure in 4/4 time with the result of 2 beats each in Dm7 and then G7. This combination of templates, spreadsheet editor and macros allows for very speedy song creation without any typing. The song form editor also features a page view mode and font scaling to allow for reading from a distance.
The timeline section of the application uses a familiar track based interface with some essential differences. The timeline ruler in BandMaster takes choruses as its base and automatically adjusts to the number of choruses set in the control strip. It is also used to adjust chorus loops and sections which are described a bit further down. Instruments - as there are bass, drums and harmony instrument (or piano) can be punched in on a chorus base in the grid below the timeline ruler and track headers to the left contain typical track controls like solo, mute and popups for instrument selection.
A distinguishing feature of BandMaster is called a section. Where the timeline is the graphic representation of the allotted choruses for a song, sections are simply contiguous areas in that timeline. There are the Time Scale section with 8 settings from half-time to double-time, the Transposition section and lastly the Trade Fours section. Sections can be applied independently over any group of choruses. With these features it is possible for example to set up a song structure that starts out with the bass instrument only in half-time and then adds drums and piano in the 3rd chorus. After 4 choruses with all instruments the song could then enter a transposed section (maybe up a semitone), add a trade-fours section after another 2 choruses and finally revert back to the original key in the last chorus possibly again at half speed. Altogether a very realistic scenario. To practice all these transitions between tempi, keys, solo sections etc. BandMaster features an assortment of
looping capabilities.
Loops are handled in a very unique fashion in BandMaster in order to accommodate the practicing musician. At the base is the song form which is looped quite simply by assigning a number of choruses in the control strip. A secondary type of loop in BandMaster is called form loop. It allows the user to select a section of chords in a song form and just loop them. This is very handy when practicing transitions, turnarounds, etc. Yet another form of loop in BandMaster is called chorus loop. This is extremely useful when employing sections in BandMaster as in the example above.
In addition to easy song creation and very unique playback options BandMaster can display crucial analytical detail in the analysis window. in It shows relevant chord/scale information and automatically updates itself with the current selection in the chord grid when editing and during playback. Chords are displayed in closed root position in the notation display section of the window. Listed below are guide tones, chord tones, a selection of compatible pentatonic, hexatonic, heptatonic and octatocnic scales as well as upper structure triads where applicable. Like the large counter window the Analysis window is semi-transparent which is invaluable when displaying it on top of a maximized song window.

The app's designers enhanced the user experience with realistic paper texture feel combined with 3-D "page flipping" effects and browser cropping or adding camera-roll photos into entries.

"The app helps you vividly express your thoughts through the use of images and text in a realistic diary environment.
Personal thoughts are kept locked away inside the Safe Diary app, protected by an encrypted password that the user chooses. No one can read the journal without this secret PIN.
After opening the app, users can start writing quickly by tapping "write". The design of Safe Diary includes more room to write entries and edit images than other apps, making the experience more pleasant and efficient.
The app not only encourages people to write about their lives, it also makes it simple to add photos. Users can choose from either the Camera Roll or newly taken pictures. Images can be rotated, resized, and moved into position.
Safe Diary is one of the first apps to support grabbing and cropping an image from inside a Web browser, and adding that image to the diary text. With just the swipe of their finger, users can draw a line around an image they find online to copy it (for example, a round photo of earth or around someone's head).
The image can then be quickly added to their personal journal in the app. The user can rotate, scale, and move it to fit their taste. Text will automatically flow around the photos and browser images that users insert thanks to a smart algorithm built into Safe Diary.
"Text flows nicely around images for a visually impressive page layout without any extra work from you," Adrian Sule said. "With Safe Diary, it's easy to create a keepsake that you'll enjoy looking back at again and again."
The app offers several convenient ways to find diary entries. In Calendar view, users can quickly jump to any entry according to date. "Read" shows a list of entries with helpful snippets of text and images. Users can check specific days for personal thoughts or click to read / edit them in a larger view.
Users can also browse their entries in a smart scrollable list, then tap to open in full screen mode. The search box will filter entries by keyword for easy access. Users can flip through pages with a realistic 3-D book effect that uses flipping and image curling animations.
Another way Safe Diary protects private thoughts is with an iCloud backup that keeps a copy of writings safely online. Users can pull down on the homescreen and release to sync. Users can also email all entries to themselves as PDF files or use the iTunes file share feature.

Today, they announce the release of their new 1.2 version which features single player, and multi-player modes using Game Center. The game shows players how many letters are in the word and if it is a noun or an adjective, players can also use the word in a sentence. Now players can play head to head word challenges using auto-match or invite friends to play and chat in game.
Chicago, Illinois - BiBa Soft, a small app development company, released their word game Play Dictionary last month receiving five star ratings and rave reviews. Today they announced public release of their new 1.2 version which features single player, and multi-player modes using Apple Game Center. Now you can play head to head word challenges using auto-match or invite your friends to play and chat in game.
"We wanted to create a unique word game that was more than just building a word from another or unscrambling a few tiles to spell a word. Play Dictionary allows people to use the dictionary like never before in a multi-player interactive word game," says Larry Brunken, co-creator of the game. "With the addition of Apple Game Center users can just open and invite friends to play together, we will use it in all our future games."
The game shows you how many letters are in the word and if it is a noun or an adjective, you can also use the word in a sentence. Choose to buy a letter and it will show letters in the word as a clue. You can also use the "ask a friend" feature to email or send a message of the definition during the game to a friend so they can help you answer in real-time to play along. There are more then nine addictive levels depending on the size of the word, creating a challenge for even the most literate English professor.
Mr. Brunken states, "Our goal is to release a collection of fun interactive word games that engage people of all ages."
