I am trying to set up Smart Folders to hold flagged posts from mail lists (like this one) I'd like to remember for future perusal (ie, "Boy, that is one smart idea. I'll save this one in the "Smart Ideas" folder!).

For single groups I subscribe to the solution is straightforward: create a Smart Mailbox for messages received from that group AND that are flagged by me.

But I subscribe to more than one Mac support mail lists, and I'd like to have all such flagged posts from several lists appear in one Smart Folder.

Is there any way to do this?

Thanks,
Dave

I see what you mean. Perhaps this will work if the Smart MailBox is at the
Inbox level?

Just tried that. Smart Mailboxes appear under their own category, not under
any existing folder. I set up one for 'Flagged' and messages I marked as
Flagged in *any* folder appeared in the 'Flagged' box. I don't see that you
need to do anything extra.

Thanks Otto for your reply.

I don't understand what you mean. As far as I know rules don't care where the destination folder is, and rules are applied as the messages come into the Inbox.

Could you please clarify what you mean?

Thanks,
Dave

Otto,
I want a separate Smart Mailbox for each subject, which may include flagged messages from several mail lists:

Smart Mailbox "Mac" to contain flagged messages from:
Mac mail list
OS X mail list

Smart Mailbox "Cars" to contain flagged messages from:
Audi mail list
Ford mail list

I don't see how I can do this.

Thanks,
Dave

Unless all your "car" messages have something in common and all your "Mac"
messages have something in common, we need to be able to nest conditions
and I can't see how to do that. Strange that Apple didn't allow this.

There might be a way round this. If you have all the 'From' addresses in
your OS X Address Book, you can put those cards into groups and test for
the groups in Mail.

So, in Address Book, you would have a card for 'Mac Mail' and one for 'OS X
Mail' which you put in a Group or Smart Group. You can then test for that
group in the Mail Smart Mailbox conditions. Ditto for the 'car' addresses.

WOW! I had no idea.

Otto, this is a creative, "outside the box" solution. Very cool.

I'll start on that tonight.

Thanks!

On closer inspection I see that the rule in the Smart Mailbox is "Sender is member of group:". But messages to a group list are send from individuals, usually, so your suggestion -- as creative as it is -- won't work for me. Unless I collect all the members' addresses in my Address Book.

I guess I'm hosed.

A Regular Expressions option in the Rules would be a very powerful addition to Mail. I'll send a suggestion to the Mail feedback address. Again.

Thanks,
Dave

But isn't the "sender" the group, not the individual? For instance, you
will receive this reply from macsupportcentral@yahoogroups.com, not from me
directly.

BTW I didn't think of that solution (I didn't realise what groups it
referred to). I found it here

First of all, I would copy, *not* move, the whole iPhoto Library
folder/package to an external drive, or to another folder on your internal
drive if that's your only option.

If you don't have an external drive, I *strongly* recommend getting one.
What happens if your internal drive fails?

Do you have a USB flash drive large enough for iPhoto Library?

I was mistaken about the "not the files". I thought iPhoto was like iTunes
in that you could delete the file "pointer" from the database but then had
the option to delete or keep the actual file itself. This doesn't seem to
be the case.

The actual image files are in Originals, and also in Modified if you've
made any changes. I don't know what Library6.iPhoto is used for but mine is
only 4 kB so it can't hold any image files. I also have Library.iPhoto (4
kB) and Library6.iPhoto.bak (1 MB). None of these have been modified since
2009 so I suspect they are remnants of older iPhoto versions and are no
longer used. I'll have to move them and see if iPhoto complains, or do some
research.

So, in your case, I would add the entire Originals folder back into iPhoto.
I'm curious how the missing photos got removed, though. Do they have
anything in common?

I think New Album is for grouping photos you already have so I don't think
it will help.

I do have 2 external drives which I use for Super Duper, which is one for my iMac and one for my Macbook.. I also have 16GB memory stick which would be ample for iPhoto.

I was closing iPhoto last week and it was 'not responding' (which was unusual) so I did the force quit to close it. This is all I can think of which might have caused the problem but I didn't notice the missing pictures until yesterday.

I'll select the iphoto Originals and paste it to the memory stick, then try dropping it into iPhoto, fingers crossed. This will have to be tomorrow now.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hmmm? Did not seem to work for me, but perhaps that is because I still have my original CD drive still in my MBPro. Am waiting for OWC to ship me my new 480GB SSD, and then I will replace my CD drive.

I am with Otto on slamming Apple for this type of practise.

Thanks to Tim and Otto for your replies.

That's a possibility Nick. I did not have the opportunity to use this until after replacing my internal drive with an SSD.

This is Mail version 5.3 (2011). I can't find a newer version.

When I go to Preferences > Accounts, and Account Information, there is no +- at the bottom of the right column. The left column "Accounts" lists only my alum.mit.edu, which is the one I want it to send mail "from" but it doesn't. There is a +- at the bottom of the left column. If I choose "+" it goes to "Add Account"; if I log in it asks for things like Description and Incoming Mail Server that I don't know. Anyway it looks as if I don't need to add that account, just activate it somehow. Help?
