I downloaded the firmware in the form of a 3.4 MB iso file. Crucial Tech Support told me to burn it to a blank DVD, insert it, press and hold the C key while re-starting the Mac, and then simply follow the instructions to update the firmware.

Most likely the CD is not seen as a bootable drive. You could try rebooting with the CD in and the <Option> key held down, to see if the CD is shown as a possible choice in the list of available boot sources.

These days, I think any such firmware upgrade should include instructions for creating a bootable Flash drive.

The instructions clearly imply that the iso file is of a bootable disc. The problem likely lies in the details.

Try holding "option" as suggested, or even "D" (which is used to run the hardware test off of DVD or hard drive). Do you have only one optical drive? Or reset the startup disc in Preferences and restart. Does it see the CD as an option? Does the CD mount at all? Do you know if you can boot from this optical drive? You can test this by holding "c" while booting from your original installation disc (if you have one).

I just ran in to a similar fussiness on a bad 2007 Macbook. It refused to boot to a half-dozen or so known boot discs of various kinds. It simply ignored them. Eventually we got it to boot from a Snow Leopard disc and reinstalled the OS. Never did figure out why it didn't like the other discs.

Cheers,
tod
