Howdy.
You should be able to use CCC to copy everything back to a new hard
drive. The new HD should first be formatted which Apple may do for
you.
You could also use Time Machine since it will backup all files on a
drive unless you have accessed Time Machine preferences and then the
Time Machine Options and excluded some folders from backup.
I think it is a better course for a reliable system over time to
install a new and fresh Mac OS X system then use the Time Machine
Restore to move applications and data back to new HD.

I tried holding down the 'Option' key while booting, but to no avail, and when I opened system preferences I noticed that the CD Drive was not available as a boot drive.
Thanks for your help. Barry.

I don't know if this has been mentioned or applies, but you can burn the iso file to the disk or burn the disk image to the disk (or used to be able to). I double click on the disk image so it is mounted first, then burn the cd in the Disk Utility, by highlighting the mounted disk and then Burn.

My notes on my iMac (Mt Lion), iphone (3GS OS6) and my iPad 3(Os6) are all set to sync to iCloud. However, if I enter a note on my OS 6 devices it show up on my iMac. However, if I add a note to my Notes on my iMac it never syncs to the OS devices. Is this a flaw in Mt Lion as I do not think this occurred in Lion or Snow Leopard?
Many thanks

After a lot of fiddling around here is what I found that I needed to do: Go into Notes and under Notes->Default Account click on iCloud. After my upgrade to Mt Lion I never checked the notes default account. When I checked the iCloud, a note from my iMac showed up in all my OS devices. However, I don't know how to update all the old Notes that are on my iMac.
Thank,
Tanya

I don't know if anyone else is watching the key note but these new
iMacs are EXACTLY what I was hoping for. I am SO disappointmend that
we have to wait until November for 21.5" and DECEMBER for 27". But I
will be ordering a 27" as soon as the store opens.
New "Apple Fusion Drive" technology is exactly what it should be -
128GB SSD with either 1TB or 3TB hard drive built into same drive and
Mountain Lion automatically moves what it uses most to SSD and what it
uses least to HDD based on each users use pattern.
This will be my XMas present to myself, no doubt. Been waiting to
upgrade since the 27" first came out.

I also watched the live feed of the event, and I too was really impressed with the new iMac's, and especially impressed with the new iPad minis. I will most definitely be ordering one as soon as we are able to.

While both are lovely, you do realize that the iMac is still about a inch thick in the display. I don't know why they made such a big deal about the edge being only 5mm thick.
I am an Apple Enthusiast, but what does a 5mm edge do for me other than (real stupid) eye-candy? Does it make it work better or faster? Or does it make me think that Apple thinks their customers are really gullible?

Aesthetics are an important design criteria, just as much as function. Apple knows this and does both better than most others. Yes, these beauties don't need to be that thin at the edges, but it doesn't half look stunning. The fact they are thicker at the centre really doesn't 't matter, you don't see that....
You must have noticed that apple products seem to find their way into an awful lot of tv shows or films these days, that need computer props. They don't do that because of their USB ports ...

Not just props. They are commonly seen in news, science, and other factual
programs here in the UK. Quite often the Apple logo on the laptops is
covered, so it's not simple product placement.

A POTS phone line can be tested easily for connection with DMM and simple phone set.
How does one test an RG-6 coax cable, for example, for a cable TV signal or broadband signal? I mean short of carrying around a portable TV or such...
Maybe a simple detector circuit and DMM?
Thanks,
Dave

Success!
I pulled the HD out of this old Mini (2006) so it was open anyway. So
I removed the optical Superdrive and took off the top of the drive.
(The manufacturer surely doesn't want users opening this: tiny
screws, some hidden beneath labels.)
The lens is easily accessible once the top is removed. A few
judicious blasts of canned air on and around the lens, and then
careful cleaning of the lens itself with alcohol and a Q-tip.
I burned one disc without any errors. Not a huge test case, but
that's much better than the previous experience. I think it's fixed.
To reiterate: the drive had burned fewer than 50 discs in its life,
so I suspected that the problem was accumulation of dust. I think my
success here bears out that theory.
FYI...
Cheers,
Dave

Installed 10.6 onto newly configured mini.
After migrating from old drive, used Software Update to apply 10.6.8 combo updater. All went as expected.
After reboot, the usual log-in screen comes up (with 3 users' identities listed -- migrated from old system).
No matter which user I choose and enter the password, the result is the same: the password is accepted, the blue screen appears (the usual first step toward launching the finder, etc.), and then... the log-in screen comes back up.
Repeat ad infinitum.
I rebooted in safe boot mode (shift key held down), but the symptoms are the same.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Dave

OS X 10.6.8 (I think... it won't boot so I can't verify)
