Thanks for that, John. It turns out that as I was trying to play my iTunes, my computer (downstairs) went to sleep, effectively leaving my ATV with only the option of grabbing the music from the cloud.

Perhaps not on this group, but other groups (although only a few in a group) have experienced the same thing in the past. You apparently think I've sent multiple mails deliberately, but I don't know why anyone would do so.

A few years ago I was receiving the same message multiple (10?) times an hour from a Yahoo group to which I belonged (and still belong). Yahoo only fixed it after many days.

You remember correctly. As of iOS 6, iTunes Match is an all-or-nothing deal. If you activate it on a mobile device, you cannot have a local music library on that device.
So if you are ever out of range of wifi (and cell service on a device that has it), you will have no music on your mobile device. Unless, of course, you know beforehand that you will need to turn off iTunes Match on that device and load music onto it.

Not true - you can download anything stored "in the cloud" aka in your
iTunes Match Library to your device AFTEr you enable it. I have signed up
for iTunes Match since it was first available in the beta and keep a lot of
playlists on my local device.

All that's required to stream music from iTunes on your Mac to your AppleTV is to turn on Home Sharing which you can find in the Advanced menu in iTunes. IIRC, the AppleTV will ask for your password when you set it up.

And don't let your computer go to sleep, because the AppleTV won't see Home Sharing if computer is napping.

They can not "vanish" if large amounts of RAM fail to become available for
reuse when the app responsible is closed down*. There is something wrong
here and it would be useful if Patsy gave us more info, such as how much
RAM is in use when Shockwave is in use, and how much when it is closed.

*Most of it should become available when the app is merely idle. Only a
small "core" amount of RAM is necessary to keep an app running but idle.

Howdy.

Try the cleaner disc several times.

Otto also suggested trying different brand DVDs.

However, the slot loading type of DVD / Optical drive in the Mac Mini,
iMac, and laptops have a fairly poor record for reliability.

I've probably burned more than a thousand DVDs and CDs in the tray
loading optical in my MacPro and it's still going but I've come across
a lot of folks here, neighbors, and friends, who had to replace the
slot loading type.

You could probably replace it yourself with some study of how-to-do-it
videos.

Or, just a thought, you could get an external DVD tray loading
burner/player that you could use and then move to a newer Mac is/when
you get one.

Otto, you are a genius! I dug out my old Leopard install disks, installed iPhoto onto Lion and did as you said. Also wiped details from AutoImporter prefs for good measure. At last, after years, it works as it always should have!

It has iPhoto left on it. 'Connecting camera opens: says 'No application'(!)

This setting obviously holds even if iPhoto is off so where is the altered value held?
It seems not in the com.apple.iphoto.plist as I can see no intelligible reference to 'camera' or'connect' or 'picasa'. Any idea where it is? When I know, I'll be happier about deleting the unwanted iPhoto.

I was having a lot of trouble importing an audiobook CD that I just wanted to play on my computer or on my iPhone and then delete. I used Get Info to input the Author and Title, imported the CD and then attempted to describe it as an audiobook (under Get Info, Options, Media Kind: audiobook). Sometimes it would not allow me to do that, the "Media Kind" choice was grayed out. I also saw little clouds beside most, but not all of the tracks, some had no cloud and some had a cloud with a line through. I realized that it had to do with their being automatically uploaded to the cloud through iTunes match that I foolishly signed up for. I am trying to get out of iTunes match, but I did discover that if one clicks on "ITune Store" and then on "Store" in the menu bar, one can turn off Genius and iTunes match. Both of these "services" if that's what they are, IMHO are useless, or as Steve Jobs would say, "c--p' (I just finished his biography).
