I might edit short videos, could do something in iMovie with my family history photos but nothing huge.

I can't imagine why he would advise that because more RAM increases
performance, especially with graphic applications. And unlike days
of old when increasing memory was a cost intensive endeavor the
prices these days make it a worthwhile expense.
I do recommend that if you plan on maxing out your system to check
out third party resources for memory such as OWC, RamJet, etc.,
instead of buying from Apple and having them install it for you.
Unlike the 21.5 inch iMac the 27 inch does permit the consumer to
self install RAM.

Not being a fly on the wall during that conversation, I can only guess at his/her meaning...
He/she probably discourages buyers from buying the Mac with maximum RAM installed. That is the most expensive way to maximize your new Mac's RAM.
Buy the Mac with whatever other options you want and order the RAM from OWC or other recommended retailer of RAM and either install it yourself or have someone competent locally do that for you. Buying RAM this way is affordable.

The door for memory sticks is at the bottom of my late 2009 27" iMac. Not sure about the newer thinner 27" iMacs. I purchased larger RAM sticks from OWC over a year ago and installed them myself. Their RAM is cheaper than in previous years w any Mac. If you can't install it yourself, have someone help. You don't give the reason the rep at Apple gave for his advice. It is bad advice if you are buying a new 27" iMac. Max the RAM available.
I use iPhoto, Photoshop, and Adobe Bridge to view images. On 4 GB RAM, you choke their usage without the MAX RAM.
If you are buying a new 27" iMac to view quantities of photos, don't scrimp on RAM. It's like the guy who asks the pilot of a plane why there were delayed. The pilot says they are trying to figure out how much fuel it will take to reach their destination. The guy responds: "Fill it up. Fill it up."

In your case (as in my own), maxing our your RAM is likely going from 4 GB to 6 GB, which is unlikely to make a huge difference, and did not for me (a little better, yes).

We use (unfortunately) the Neat software for Mac (not recommended) to manage our finances. It can export to Quicken files (qif) for our accountant.
Does anyone know of a FREE viewer we can use to just look at the files to make sure they contain what we think they contain?
Thanks,
Dave Jones

I tried setting that up, and it first asks for an email address. I tried inputting my existing one and it wasn't accepted.
So what is the process? Do I need to set up a new iCloud email account and then forward my existing email account to it?
Thanks.

OK, I get that. But do you then go by that new iCloud mail address you create? I'm not willing to give up my current one. Or do you forward mail from your existing account to your iCloud address?
Thanks.

Just got a new MBP Retina to replace my older MBP. With my old MBP, when I would leave it for a few hours the display would go to sleep in accordance with my Energy Saver settings, but I set the computer to never sleep. Whenever I returned I would hit an arrow key and it would wake up.
With my new MBP, with the same Energy Saver settings, when I leave it for a few hours and return it won't wake up. I hit different keys, use the track pad, etc. Eventually I give up and do a hard reboot, risking any unsaved data.
Any hints?
Thanks.
Best,
Jim

You can set up various email accounts with the various different addresses in Apple Mail Preferences. They will be displayed separately when you open mail. Be sure you follow the instructions for enabling iCloud on all of your devices.

iTunes today told me on startup there was a new version available. I clicked download/install or whatever it said and Software Update started up and did it's thing searching for update-able software on my machine. It tells me I'm up to date.
Investigating this further I tell itunes to check for updates and again it tells me 11.0.4 is available. I have 11.0.3.
I click "download itunes" within itunes and again software update starts up, "Checking for new software..."
Again it says, "Software Update doesn't have any new software for your computer at this time."
So I google "itunes 11.0.4" and see that the update CAN be applied to 10.6.8, my present OS. I google "software update doesn't update to itunes 11.0.4" and find no reports.
So I am wondering what is the reason for this? I CAN download directly from here, http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ but why doesn't software update see the new version?
Thanks for any insights.
Investigating this further I tell itunes to check for updates and again it tells me 11.0.4 is available. I have 11.0.3.

Howdy.
Something is confused!
Try manually downloading the iTunes 11.0.4 update.
Don't use Software Update.
Use you web browser and go to:
<http://www.apple.com/ > (this is the USA Apple site, your site might
be different)
Then click the Support tab on the Apple page.
Then click Downloads (round gray icon with a down arrow).
Scroll down to the iTunes 11.0.4 item and download it to your Desktop
or Downloads folder.
Then install it.
The download will be a Disk Image File. Disk Image Files are common
and normal. The dot extension is .dmg.
If you need help using a Disk Image File, write back, but learning
about Disk Image Files is a VGTTD (Very Good Thing To Do).
Disk Image Files have been around on Macintosh for a about 2 decades.
