I just wanted to add my two cents... I also highly recommend the Moshi keyboard protector. I've had mine for three years and it feels transparent. It has saved me several times. There are others out there on amazon for a few dollars, I bought one just to compare, I went back to my Moshi. Highly recommend.

Sellers advertise using the top/sexiest capability of the device.
If they call it "CDRW" and don't mention "DVD", it is unlikely there is any DVD capability.

True; it couldn't hurt to try.

As far as I can tell, Yahoo email seems to be a major weakness of the iMac.
I have several Yahoo accounts and one Gmail. Periodically, the iMac will not recognize one or more of the Yahoo accounts and I can't get mail. It keeps asking me for the password, which has not changed. However, no problem getting email on the iPads.
I know I can delete and redownload the Yahoo accounts, but that is seriously annoying.
I hate to keep using the PC because I would like to ditch it.
Why can't Yahoo and Mac get together?

My guess is that the weakness lies with Yahoo, but one thing to do is make sure you are signed in at Yahoo since I'm often automatically signed out when I check it. You can also read your Yahoo mail via Safari should you so desire. I've found that clicking the Cancel button when I get the repeated requests for my password keeps it at bay for a few days.

Yahoo automatically signs a member out after two weeks. Even if you use it daily. WordPress signs you out after 1 week. Goodreads every time. It's just like that. Remember your password -

Howdy.

I think you have an issue that is not quite as iMac related as you
think.

I have several Yahoo email accounts, have had them for many years, they
work just fine, almost never any problems, and this has been the case
on multiple different Macintosh models.

Do you use your Yahoo email as web based email via your web browser or
do you have accounts set up in your Macintosh email program for each of
your Yahoo email accounts and use Yahoo mail as client email?

I would doubt that your iMac hardware has anything yo do with your Yahoo problems. It is most likely a Yahoo problem.

I won't pussy-foot like the others. The problem is not with your iMac.

I am on 4 Apple related lists, and I'm seeing a lot of problems with Yahoo, particularly with passwords. Also if you have been following the news about the internet, you will read about a lot of hacking and such. That means lots of extra internet traffic.

Let me guess some of the web sites you are visiting are taking longer to acknowledge and maybe even longer to draw the pages.

When your computer sends out a request to a Yahoo mail server, the server requests your password. Well, if it takes a (relative) long time to reach the server, it may time out and that causes the request for a password. But since your Mac already gave it, and yahoo did not recognize it, you get a request to manually enter your password. Just like back in the good old days of dial up.

That and Yahoo just seems to be having a lot of service related issues lately.

It must be your iMac surfing settings as mine never has issues w Yahoo, unless they occasionally slow or Yahoo has an occasional blip, but I never have any problems with my iMac at Yahoo. I'm in and out everyday, no problems.

How do you keep cookies on your browser? Sounds like your browser is set to erase all cookies once you quit the browser. Yahoo does request my password about every two weeks. That's for all users.

> I know I can delete and redownload the Yahoo accounts, but that is seriously annoying.

Don't see why you should choose to do that, but your choice.

Yahoo and my iMac w Mountain Lion and Safari 6.0.5 work beautifully. Investigate your computer settings.

This is a fairly common problem. It's not unique to Yahoo, or any particular ISP.
It is due to a timing issue between Mail
and your ISP. Mail gives your account password before your ISP's
server is ready for it. When the server is finally ready for it, the
password has already been given, and the server must request it again.
Thus you get a request for you to manually give your password.

Doing this fixes the problem for most users:

Launch the Keychain application, located in your Utilities
folder.

in the Edit menu, choose Keychain List. Now in the Shared column check both System and Login.

In the upper left column, highlight Login.
In the lower left column, highlight Passwords.

In the right window scroll until
you find your internet service provider's incoming and outgoing mail servers.
They are usually called something like:
"mail.yourisp.com"
and
"smtp.yourisp.com"

For Comcast they are:
"mail.comcast.net"
and
"smtp.comcast.net"

Double-clicking on each (in turn) will bring up a window with tabs at the top
which say Attributes and Access Control.
Select Access Control.

Then select "Allow all applications to access this item." Make sure you do this for both
the incoming server and outgoing server
keychain items.

Hi all,

I've been having some yukkie modem problems for the last couple days and a technician is coming out tomorrow to check stuff. So far I've got a new modem because the prior was still on warranty from AT&T. The old one was only 8 months old but it just stopped working and the phone tech told me to take it back - no problem.

But the new one wouldn't work either. I called tech support and after a bunch of tests we tried it on the jack in the kitchen - nothing. That jack works fine for the phone. So a tech is coming tomorrow morning. After we hung up I tried the phone on all the jacks in the house and it worked everywhere. Then I tried the modem on the other jacks and it didn't work anywhere. Oh my.

So I tried my little mobile hot-spot mifi and picked that signal up on my computer just fine. All is well I seem to have a LOT better speed and 5G is pretty good monthly amount. (I bought the mifi a couple years ago for completely different reasons - travel and laptops.)

Can a mifi be a workable modem on a permanent basis? Any drawbacks? I could let the AT&T go and just use it.

If the mifi works well and gives you enough speed, then the only issue is
cost. How does it add up per month?

BTW DSL modems need a microfilter (splitter) to separate data from voice.
Did you use one when trying the AT&T modem?

I'm thinking that the cost is about the same if I give up the DSL.

We had the filter in on the first try but then the tech told me to take it off. I think I might try it on in the other jacks.
