800-123-DIAL? -- on iPhones

I wasn't sure how to phrase the subject, so hopefully my explanation will make sense.

I've started a new job with a company. Our 1-800 number has our acronym as the last four digits. So, we put our number in our email signatures, on letterhead, etc. as 1-800-123-DIAL (this is just an example, not my company number).

However, we've run into situations where people get our email on their smart phones, and the telephone number is highlighted to click-and-call. However, the phones aren't catching the acronym at the end... and so it's defeating the purpose.

We don't want to be redundant and put 1-800-123-DIAL (3425), because it eliminates the option to click-and-call.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what we could do to "fix" this? Has this ever come up before? As I mentioned at the beginning, I don't know how to phrase it, so I'm not sure what to search for online.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Jim

I can't think of a work around for this but I personally hate that kind of
phone numbers.

Not to sound condescending but can't you just put the actual number? The
whole purpose behind having a number with a 'keyword' or acronym is so it
is easy to remember when hearing advertising. Putting a number in a
signature so they can tap/click to dial means they don't have to remember
it so putting the actual number in the signature would let them dial and
using the acronym in other advertising would be easy to remember.

Very few if any devices would dial a number with letters in it either in
signature or via text.

Not condescending at all... we could do that, but I wanted to ask the experts in the group if there was a work-around in some way.

The problem also is that emails are read both on a phone and on email.  We are getting prepared for a major national marketing campaign, and I was just hoping to find a sweet-n-simple solution to it.

However, it sounds like that's not the case.

If anyone else has a suggestion, I'd like to hear it.

Thanks everyone!

I am with you on that. I'm not sure why, but I prefer just numbers as
most of the mnemonics aren't full words and hard to remember which
letter is missing.

It would be an interesting case study to see who prefers straight
numbers to mnemonics.

I'm far from a marketing guru but I do handle it for my own company and see
quite a bit of materials from vendors and usually e-mails and
correspondence list the full number so you can easily add to contacts,
etc. Printed materials show the actual and vanity numbers and auditory
materials will say the vanity number several times and the actual number
after words.

So email is typically:
John Doe, Senior VP
ABC Corp
1-800-555-4222
7 Corner St
City, ST. 10002

Business cards/slips are
John Doe, Senior VP
ABC Corp
1-800-555-4ABC (4222)

Verbal advertising is:
Call John Doe at 1-800-555-4ABC that's 1-800-555-4222

I add probably 3-10 people per day to my contacts from clients to vendors
to sales leads and being able to copy/paste the info without changing
anything makes it much easier than those who just try and use vanity info.

If you do want ot Google the term is vanity numbers so "Dialing Vanity #
from iPhone, etc"...

Put the numbers in first and the acronym in ().
I personally find acronym phone numbers anoying and counter productive.

Ditto. The letters underneath the numbers are as anchronistic as the old telephone exchanges. When I was a boy, I think they were "MU" for mutual, and "OX for Oxford, then five numbers.

If it weren't for people texting on un-smart phones, the letters would have been as extinct and obsolete as Roman numerals by now. I wouldn't use them as a marketing tool because it totally annoys people who have to think what the _____ letters translate to as numbers in the phone number. I have actually done business elsewhere because the phone I was using didn't have the letters and thought to myself - screw the ____ letters I don't have time to figure it out.

If I were going to use a telephone number as a marketing device, I'd request 867-5309 because it is one of the most recognizable numbers. Or it was in the 80's.

To key in the acronym requires inspecting 26 symbols.
To key in the number requires inspecting 10 symbols.

Thats why its easier and faster to key in the number, rather than the acronym.
Of course, the acronym may be easier to remember than the number; but most people have too much to remember as it is. They will NOT remember either the number or the acronym, but they may key the number into their phones directory; and as someone pointed out, the phone dials numbers only not letters.

The text message for data use can run 3days behind on 3G per att customer service. Sometimes a text via edge is more up to date.

Today my slow speed has doubled from 0.15 mbs to 0.3 mbs. Fast should be about 1.5mbs. My new month starts tomorrow so well see what happens.

Hi Allison,

You need to create or download a silent ringtone to your phone using iTunes then you can assign to a contact. I don't think you can assign a vibrate only to a contact.

You can create a silent ringtone in GarageBand if you have a Mac.

Hello group,

I have been a bit of a lurker but I now need your assitance with adding an iPhone to my verizon plan. I will be buying the 4s by Friday (along with an iPad) and am wanting to trickle my 4 iPhone to the other person on my line. Basically I am adding them, using their line to buy the 4s than wanting to move the 4s to my line and swap the 4 to them.

My question is this something that has to be done in the store or can I just call verizon and have them do the switch over the phone? With my other smart phones its never been an issue but the iPhone is all new territory to me.

Thanks for all the help!
