How to update iOS w/o a computer

Posted by: "Harry Hinz" harry.ke6rj@gmail.com   samsradiohams

I started an iPad user group in our RV resort. Most are old geezers and need a lot of help. A question came up: how do folks without a computer and iTunes upgrade to the latest V 5? Many are still using earlier than V 4.2

Henry:

Well done on your user group, you're a good man.

There is no way to update to iOS 5 without a computer. My recommendation is to visit an Apple Store (make a Genius Bar appointment) and have them perform the update to iOS 5. Once the device has iOS 5 running, there will never be a need to connect to a computer for an update again, as one of the new features is OTA (Over The Air) updates.

The Apple Store GB will update your device for you -- they did several of
mine -- ***BUT*** and it's a big but! -- you will lose *everything* that is
on the device. This may be OK if all you have is some apps (you can
re-download, *if* they are still available) with *no* data. But if you have
photos, music, videos, bookmarks, etc. then they'll be gone when the update
is done.

IOW what you'll get if the GB does the update is a "new" device -- ready to
be loaded with "stuff" (or restored from backup) -- but none of your old
content.

The GB will ask you right off if you have a backup to restore from. I don't
know if they can (or will) also do a backup on their machines to restore for
you.

You cant upgrade without a computer and iTunes. iTunes is a must. People
should research before buying things.

Isn't it research when people ask questions on forums like this? Even
tho I believe in reading manuals first, I still had many questions that
ultimately got answered here. I think long time users forget their
humble beginnings. ;)

Not when you buy the product and THEN decide to find out if you have
everything required to use it. If you don't have a computer (and really, in
this day and age you should) and/or iTunes, you shouldn't get an iPod Touch
because you'll be wasting your money.

Actually, if we didnt have a computer in every home and every pocket,
we would be so much better off.

If you dont like seeing people ask for help like this, you might want
to find something else to do. You certainly did not like me asking
questions when I first joined the group. Well I wont waste my time with
this thread so... .)

Hi Sue

The advertisements that I see today tell me that the only thing that you need to operate a new iPod Touch is the iPod Touch and a Wi-Fi connection.

(And maybe your Wi-Fi connection could be at Starbucks or standing out in front of an Apple Store)

Maybe buying one as your only digital device would not be a waste of money.

From time to time I think about abandoning my PC and living with my iPod Touch as my only computer. It is a poor tool for the Internet but better than nothing.

We recently purchased an iPad when my wife's laptop died. You may recall the thread. Until we upgraded to iOS 5, it had to be synched to her iPhone via a computer with iTunes. Now that we've upgraded both her iPhone and iPad, they sync without the computer and she has had no need of an additional computer. That may be the case with the new iPod Touch.

By the way, we read a great deal about the iPad on the Apple store site and in user reviews. I talked to a lot of people who have iPads and love them. It wasn't until I unpacked the iPad that I found out you couldn't even use it until you connected it to a computer with iTunes. Apple sure didn't advertise it, and none of the people mentioned it.

If you are running iOS 5 you do not need a computer, you can back up on the cloud, borrow books from the library, and purchase from apple and some other locations. if you wish to upload your own content then you need a computer.

They shouldn't have to advertise it. It's common sense/knowledge and listed in the product description.

Even with iOS 5, if you want to transfer music, photos, etc. You need iTunes. The iCloud's storage is limited unless you want to pay for it.

New to your group. I have a question about one of the old IPods.

Hello!
My name is Dora. I bought 2 used older IPods for my kids. I have music saved on my computer and I wanted to put them on my kid's IPODs. I bought a cord (USB) and connected it to my computer. I then put a file from my computer on the IPod, but I can't seem to find it on the IPod. Do I need some kind of special (reader type) of software to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dora

Hi Dora:

Can you give us some more info:

Which model (nano, Touch, Classic) iPod?
What kind of computer (Mac or Windows)?
What kind of "file" did you attempt to put on the iPod?

Thanks!

HOW did you put the file on the iPod?
Sync in iTunes or treat-as-disk or what?

Hello!
My name is Dora. I bought 2 used older IPods for my kids. I have music saved
on my computer and I wanted to put them on my kid's IPODs. I bought a cord
(USB) and connected it to my computer. I then put a file from my computer on
the IPod, but I can't seem to find it on the IPod. Do I need some kind of
special (reader type) of software to do this?
