I don't think I've seen TotalFinder mentioned. I just started using it, so
I can't say a lot about it. One cool thing is that you can call up Finder
from within any program, then dismiss it and return to where you were.

It does double-pane comparisons, drag copy/move across windows, etc.

I got mine in a bundle from MacUpdate (I think.)

Here's the site: http://binaryage.com/

It looks as if it can sort folders to the top of the pane.

I put the preview edition of 10.8 for developers on my machine. I lost iPhoto and pages and could not re-download them since they both said installed in the Mac store. It also had something called iTunes connect which made no sense to me when I clicked on it. I also couldn't downed a lot of apps from the internet that I lost.

The learning curve was much worse than any edition of Mac OS X that I have run across. I found that the only thing I liked was messages which you can get in beta for free on 7.3 until the whole distribution comes out for downloading.

I do use the cloud and the cloud ID on 7.3 but it is predictable. I would not recommend updating to Mountain Lion when it comes out. I think the 5GB free allowance is to low and I am happier with predictability.

I am only a medium user of the Mac and luckily I kept a bootable version of 7.3 just in case. I erased my hard drive and put 7.3 back on. Now I have all my icons and things work better all around.

We must remember that this is a developers preview, and nothing more.
There will be quite a bit of improvement as time goes on and new
releases are distributed. This has been true of every pre-release of
the os that I've ever had.

What does Mountain Lion do/change that requires a learning curve?

The cloud is the main learning curve. All of a sudden your documents no longer appear on your desktop. They are in the cloud until you open them. I found it hard to remember the names of the documents. Of course I may have done something wrong. I found it confusing.

There has to be the standard file requestor, no?

I kind of find it hard to believe that there would be no provision to
store these files locally as well. If not now, I'm sure there will be
in the near future.

This is a first release, folks!

And by writing about this here, you have violated the non-disclosure agreement you made with Apple to obtain the developer preview, unless, of course, you were using a pirated copy.

Crap.
1. Your described problems do not occur to everyone.
2. You are complaining about problems with an EARLY BETA of software unlikely to be released generally for 6 months.

Owner and moderators:
I do NOT think any discussion of beta software that is under an NDA belongs on this forum.

iCloud refuses to log in

Posted by: "rossrasmussen" ross2752@mac.com   rossrasmussen

Tue Feb 21, 2012 10:22 am (PST)

I'm setting up iCloud on a old(er) MacBook Air (the original one). The
response to my login is:
Unable to communicate with iCloud due to a problem.
Try signing again [sic]
On the login screen it says Unrecognized Apple ID or password.
I've checked the Apple ID and Password (went to appleid.apple.com) and
the id is verified.
I've restarted and swore, which is my last resort.
Anyone have this problem or a solution?

I was receiving an "incorrect password" message from my iCloud email account earlier today. The problem has since gone away. Most likely to have been a temporary issue with one or more iCloud servers.

Tracking, Browsing, Annonymous Browsing

Howdy.

Learn more about internet tracking issues.

We've had a discussion here related to Google and the recent changes in
its privacy policy and Google tracking data that people didn't know
about (like your Contacts on your iPhone).

An hour of today's February 21, 2012, Kojo Nnambi radio show (WAMU in
Washington, D.C, NPR member station) is on being tracked online and on
how you can avoid being tracked and browse more anonymously.

Tor Project

The show had a lot of discussion by experts and and questions from
callers about the Tor Project.

I've heard of the Tor Project before and think it is trustable. It's
an open source/free project that has a software download for Macintosh,
Windows, Linux, and Android for anonymous browsing.

I don't know, yet, if the Tor Project software also works on iPod
Touch, iPhone, and iPad (iOS) devices.

While I've heard of it I haven't tried the Tor software and have just
downloaded it to experiment with.

<https://www.torproject.org/>

If you want to download a podcast of the show, here's the WAMU link:

<http://wamu.org/>

Podcasts are at very bottom of home page.

WAMU is the American University public radio station for talk and news
in Washington, D.C. It's not the local classical music public station
but rather specializes in news, talk, information, literature,
politics, and science topics.

BTW. if you are interested in finding streaming radio, like for WAMU
in Washington, DC., here's a great site for finding streaming radio all
over the world.

Hi all,
Seems like I can't quit firefox, have to force quit.
Tried shutting down and restarting. Cleared cache and cookies. Have the latest version 10.0.2.
Do I need to delete firefox and then reinstall will that help.
Safari is working just fine.
I had my hotmail and yahoo mails phished I think as contacts were getting emails from me that I did not send. Deleted all my contacts and changed passwords, wondering if that has something to do with it. Don't use these accounts anymore.
I have a macbook running snow leopard 10.6.8, 2GHZ intel core 2 duo, memory 4 GB
Want to purchase a new desktop apple in the near future as my applecare is up this May.

Barbara,
I recently had the same problem. It was probably related to an add-on that I installed. Try going into Tools and manage your ad-ons. What worked for me was to turn off all of the add-ons and one by one turn them back on. Somehow it worked and Firefox is working well for me now.

I think the add-on route is the most likely culprit. I'd start with Barbara's advice. Tell us how that works. Probably not related to the phishing attack unless you were "infected" at the time. If shutting down all add-ons does not work, I would use something like AppCleaner to completely remove Firefox and reinstall. You'll have to reinstall your add-ons one by one as well.

Cheers,
tod

I have the same issues with the newest FF, also it always starts up with most of the tabs in offline mode too, most annoying. For me, even without extensions / add ons, it is the same.

Try shutting down any extensions you've got, in case one (or more) of them is preventing shutdown.

Free or Inexpensive Shipping Label Software

Posted by: "missladybee" beadedimages@earthlink.net   missladybee

Tue Feb 21, 2012 3:04 pm (PST)

I have an online business and use Endicia software for my shipping labels. It's a great program with a monthly fee and integrated into the postal service system for purchasing postage.

Before Endicia for Mac there used to be a free software program named after some sort of a fish (Shark or something like that). I can't remember the name and it probably doesn't exist any longer. Anybody remember such a program?

What I am looking for is a simple, free or very inexpensive program that will print 4 x 6 labels with both sender and receiver address information, no postage. I have messed with the label printing feature that is built into Mac's, but it only printed the receivers address, no return address option.

Anybody know of any such shipping label software for Mac's?

Thanks,
Barbara E
