And those definitions are very precise, and none of them include "random." RAID configurations may increase read/write speed, storage space, fault tolerance, or all of these, depending upon how the array is configured across the multiple volumes. Wikipedia has a nice discussion.

Howdy.

I get the point of a prefix character to force sort the item to the top
of a list.

However, I thought the OP was doing that with many items in a list
which seems pointless.

I use a space in front of some folder names in a list and that sorts it
to the top. Usually, however, this is for what I call an
"informational" item or a "See Also" item which I also tag with the
Blue label color.

If I added a space to many items in a single folder it rather defeats
to point of doing that, however.

I also use the List View and resort by Kind often, particularly in
folder with many files and sub folders but I do this as a temporary
thing. However, opening the same folder as a separate Finder window
(press Command and double-click the folder icon) and then I can change
the View to list and change the sort to Kind and it remembers this the
next time I open it as a separate Finder Window.

Howdy.

FileMaker is wholly owned by Apple (although you wouldn't know it
anymore).

ClarisWorks/AppleWorks was a subset of FileMaker Pro the database.

FileMaker makes several database programs.

1. FileMaker Pro, several flavors, but this is the big mojo one.

2. Bento is a sort of less complex and lower cost successor to
ClarisWorks / AppleWorks database module.

3. Bento is now available in versions for iPhone and iPad. I've read a
couple of quick reviews of Bento for iPhone and iPad and it seems that
if you planning on using a DB on iPhone in particular that you spend
some time designing it for the smaller screen format.

I just did a search at MacUpdate using the term "database" and it
produced more than 800 results. However, many are very specialized,
some a database servers, etc. Take a look at MacUpdate and do some
searching and if you find an interesting database program ask folks
here if there is any experience or opinion of the program.

I use a FileMaker Pro DB done as a relational DB for my business
contacts and contact management, time tracking, billing/invoicing,
producing taxable income reports, billing letters, and invoiced based
on time on site, travel to different locations, and notes of what was
done on site and by phone, or as research or repair or training efforts
at my home office.

The program that came up first on the MacUpdate search was Movie
Collector Database which has a pretty good reputation for movie buffs
and collectors.

Google Tracking Private Data

Howdy.

There is a great deal of TV, press, online articles, discussion, and
radio talk shows this morning on the issue of Google's change of
privacy policy, on Google spanning data tracking across all user
services, and on Google tracking private data on iPhone and other
mobile devices.

I'd like to suggest that folks use Yahoo to search for more information
on this topic!

The talk show I'm listening to at this time is both a discussion and a
call in type of show and it's running about 70% anger at Google and
maybe 30% people saying it's just a company making what the public
wants available.

I hope folks in our group will do some reading and become better
informed on this recent issue of privacy, on the issue of apps that
extract contact list names and information without your knowledge.

One caller noted that she is a physician and had just traded in her
Google Android smart phone for an iPhone and had not configured any
Google Gmail accounts or Google Plus because she is concerned that she
will be sued by patients who feel that their privacy has been
violated.

Interesting topic.

Denver Dan

p.s. I've added Yahoo to my web browser's Bookmarks bar so I can start
a Yahoo search with a single click.

There is a lesser-known search engine that seems to be as quick and thorough as Google that does not track. It's called Duckduckgo.com.

I only learned of it when I shot pictures of the creator for a newspaper story. I use it fairly regularly and for general search it's very good. And NO TRACKING...

Nice! Is there a way to add Duckduckgo.com to Safari's list of
browsers? The Preference panel locks the user into a choice of Bing,
Yahoo or Google.

I currently have 2 gmail accounts.
One I use as a "spam sponge." I plan to keep that one.
The other I use for membership in a number of organizations. I plan to replace that one with a Yahoo email account.
ALso changing default search engine from here on. Not yet sure which I will end up using the most, but Google search will not be in the running.

Yes. I just did it. The same as for IxQuick, by installing Glims:

and following these instructions:

modifying them for the browser(s) you choose.

duckduckgo has a very nice simple explanation of what Google does
with the info from your searches and why it could be a Bad Thing:

<http://donttrack.us/>

Pictures, too!

My favorite search site until last week (when they folded) was
scroogle.org. Scroogle sent your search requests to Google and sent
you the results, without cookies!

It was the best of Google without the worst of Google. But Google
decided enough was enough and a couple of weeks ago it started
blocking any searches sent from Scroogle's 6 servers. They didn't
last long after that...

Cheers,
Dave

MacBook Pro 8.2; OS X 10.7.3: 3 beeps from gray screen awakening fro

Posted by: "James Robertson" jamesrob@sonic.net   jamesrob328i

Mon Feb 20, 2012 9:19 am (PST)

Couldn't find an explanation for this on the support section of Apple's website:

Early this morning I set my sleeping MacBook Pro (early 2011, 8 GB RAM, 10.7.3) directly on top of my wife's sleeping MacBook Pro and plugged her MagSafe power adapter into my laptop to charge its battery.

When I came back a few hours later the LED on the MagSafe plug was green, but when I opened the display/lid, the screen stayed black. I assumed this meant that the computer had entered a "deep sleep" mode because of near-exhaustion of its battery before I recharged it. I pressed the power button briefly, got the expected "uhh-uhh" noise (which I think comes from the DVD drive), then a gray screen with a "dash-dash-dash" type progress bar that slowly filled in (all of which seemed normal).

HOWEVER, the progress bar never completely filled in. Instead, after filling in about 80%, it stopped, and a repeating pattern of 3 monotone beeps, at about 1 per second, occurred. I stopped this by pressing and HOLDING the power switch, which caused the machine to reboot (also as expected).

Fortunately, (although it booted into my 10.6.8 partition first), when I restarted with the option key held down it allowed me to select my Lion partition and booted into it successfully. At the completion of boot, it relaunched the apps that were running before I put it to sleep last night, but the bottom third or so of the Mail.app main window was scrambled (looked like random horizontal scan lines on a TV monitor). Mail quit without me doing anything (and without any notifications from the OS), and when I launched it again, all seemed well.

My questions:

1. What's the significance of the 3 tones? I found several articles on Apple's website that reference power management issues on older (G4 PPC) computers, as well as a few that talk about incompletely installed firmware updates on Intel MacBook Pro machines, but none that seemed to address what just happened to me.

2. My wife (who's almost afraid of her laptop) said "don't stack them on top of one another." I dismissed her suggestion until I found articles on Apple's website that say "don't stack them on top of one another" (!). However, these articles seem to apply to older machines (the issue is that the way the computer "knows" that the lid is closed is because of a magnetic proximity switch that is triggered when the lid/screen meets Jony Ive's "single machined billet of solid al-u-MIN-i-um." However, what goes wrong here is that the computer on top decides it's asleep when it's not and can't finish waking up when the screen is opened. I infer from the models that appear to be affected that this isn't an issue with the recent machines, but I'm not so sure about this. Any have experiences with this?

thanks,

Just got out my tablet I have never used on this machine.
Downloaded the appropriate drivers (for 2012) from Wacom.
Plugged the tablet into the back of my iMac.
Got a lit amber light on the tablet.
I show under System Preferences/Wacom/About/Tablet/diagnostics - the driver shows.

But I get nothing with my Intuos2 Pen. No movement, no clicking ability.

Anyone know what I am missing, or how for SL to recognize the pen?

Funny you should ask. I just tried replacing my older Intuos 2 with
a Graphire tablet. Downloaded the drivers, installed, restarted and
the newer tablet never showed up in the Wacom System Prefs panel!

Went back to my old Intuos and everything is back to "old" normal.

I'm running 10.6.8 on a 2011 MacBookPro

The problem I have with my Intuous is that the pen seems "sticky".
Slightly time-delayed reactions.

I can't get the pen to work at all. The 2012 Wacom driver I downloaded
specifically says it is for the Intuos2 tablet. I added the Bamboo driver,
whatever it is, but nothing so far. I have used a tablet in the past, but an earlier
model on an older machine. I loved it, when I needed it. Wish I could
get this tablet to work. jr

Re: shortcut in pages

It's worth getting to know keyboard shortcuts. They can save a lot of time
and avoid possible problems caused by excessive and unnecessary mouse
clicks.

If you used Windows before coming to Mac, it's worth remembering that many
shortcuts are the same, except of course that you use the command key
instead of ctrl.

You can find a list of shortcuts here
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343>

You can also download this as a file from here and keep it on your computer
for quick reference.
