New York, New York - The Whoot, a New York City-based social planning company, announced today the initial release of its website. Mobile applications on iOS and Android platforms will be available for download on February 23rd.
The Whoot (pronounced "Hoot") helps users circumvent the tedium of texting, emailing, and calling friends to determine the landscape of the night ahead. Think of The Whoot as the simple answer to the question "Who is doing what tonight?"
"The appeal of The Whoot is the simplicity of the platform," says William Quartner, one of The Whoot's Co-Founders. "We're focused on helping people make the most of their nights by providing pertinent social information in a way that's actually useful".
At the center of The Whoot are simple updates called Posts that contain the basic information about your plans for tonight (and tonight only). In order to access the site, you create a Post by selecting one of four options - Working, Staying in, Relaxing out, or Partying - which is shared with your followers. Remember, a Post isn't about what you're doing now; rather it's about what you're going to do - or want to do - tonight.
When it comes to being social, making plans begins and ends with identifying people that are on the same page as you for the night. The Whoot aims to answer that question through ease of use and ubiquitous access. "Once we gain a critical social mass, we believe the reach of our platform - offered on the web as well as iOS and Android devices - will allow The Whoot to genuinely enhance the social experience for our user base" says Co-Founder Ryan Coyne.

VoiZapp's new iOS app Read It Later reads aloud web articles saved in Read It Later, InstaPaper, and Google Reader. It was approved with no issues and released for sale. But the App Store version does not work with Google accounts. "While it could be an issue with our code, it feels like our app's Google connection was mysteriously disabled during Apple's review process," he said. "We have asked Apple for immediate clarification - if they have an issue, they should tell us that up front."
Austin, Texas - As an experienced iOS app developer, Dr. Bob Wesson has successfully traversed the App Store review process more than a dozen times. His new app - Read It Aloud - reads aloud web articles saved via Read It Later, InstaPaper, and Google Reader RSS feeds. As usual, the app was extensively beta-tested and proven solid before he submitted it to the App Store for review. And after the usual week-long wait, Read It Later was approved with no issues and released for sale this morning into Apple's App Store. But when Dr. Wesson bought and downloaded the app from the App Store, he discovered to his surprise that it no longer works with Google Reader accounts. It allows the user to login, but does not download a single Google Reader article to read aloud. It appears to work fine with Read It Later and InstaPaper accounts.
"While it could be an issue with our code, it feels like the Google connection was mysteriously disabled during Apple's review process," Dr. Wesson said. "We have rebuilt the app from source and it works fine here in our facility. Yet the version that users download from the App Store somehow cannot connect to Google Reader. We have asked Apple for immediate clarification - if they have a problem with our app connecting to the user's Google Reader feed via its publicly-available API, they should at least tell us that up front. On the off-chance that there was a hiccup in the original, we have already uploaded a revised Version 1.1 proven to work perfectly and requested an expedited review of it."

For searching the indexed data the server application supports advanced Boolean operators known only from high-end scientific databases (e.g. NEAR, BEFORE, AFTER, and OPT), wildcards, ranges, and an unlimited complexity of search terms. Fuzzy technology finds also words with typos. In addition DEVONsphere Server identifies, extracts, and indexes linked or embedded objects such as documents, PDF files, programming code snippets, email addresses, or RSS news feeds, and lets the user search and directly access them, too.
In addition DEVONsphere Server always delivers all search results (and not only the first few hundred), allows the user to sort and filter them in a number of ways, e.g. by language, and features DEVONtechnologies' unique artificial intelligence technology. DEVONsphere Server lists e.g. more documents or pages content-wise related to already found results, like DEVONthink does on the desktop.
DEVONsphere Server supports HTML pages, plain and rich text files, Office documents, PDF, PostScript, RSS/RDF/RSD/Atom news feeds and, for local files, all file formats supported by Spotlight. So-called "scanners" recognize a wide range of logical content types such as linked audio or video files, embedded multimedia, thumbnail galleries, wallpapers, webcams, downloadable files, Office documents, TeX files, contacts (vCard), RSS feeds, and email addresses. DEVONsphere Server's flexible and extensive plugin architecture allows to add more scanners without updating the main application.
DEVONsphere Server runs on standard Mac desktop hardware and is easy to integrate in existing systems. It offers flexible output options from HTML over RSS and XML/XSLT to JSON, supports Bonjour (ZeroConf), and uses up to 16 available CPUs for maximum performance on any hardware. The underlying technology maintains a small and lean index by weeding out all superfluous data and storing only essential data in a clever way. On a current Mac Pro with 32 GB of RAM DEVONsphere Server is able to index up to 2 million documents.
