‘WeeRoll’ will add over a dozen animations to Notification Center

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 05:15 PM PST

WeeRoll is an unreleased jailbreak tweak that lends the ability to add over a dozen animations to iOS 5′s Notification Center.

It’s very similar to the Flowtation tweak we covered a while back, except that there’s a lot more animation options bundled with WeeRoll.

I asked the developer why his tweak had so many animations, and he replied: “That’s just how WeeRoll”. Okay, I admit that was bad, really bad.

To make up for it, enjoy this special video preview of WeeRoll in action…(...)

Apple says apps will now need explicit user permission to access contacts

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 01:38 PM PST

Ever since the news broke that Path, a popular social network and iOS app, was uploading users’ contact lists without asking for their permission, everyone has been waiting to see how Apple would respond.

After all, it is Apple’s App Store team that is approving these apps that cull private user data without authorization. And today, the Cupertino company finally broke its week-long silence on the subject…(...)

Jailbreak apps leak less private user data than App Store apps

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 12:00 PM PST

The recent Path scandal has once again put user privacy at the forefront of mobile news. The social network was caught secretly uploading entire address books from its users’ cell phones without their authorization.

This has prompted further research into other App Store apps, and yes even jailbreak ones, to see how many other developers are guilty of these actions. And what folks are finding is, jailbreak apps actually leak much less private data than Apple-approved ones…(...)

Chinese Customs tells Proview that banning Chinese iPad exports would be difficult

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 11:06 AM PST

Apple’s latest legal hiccup, this time with display maker Proview, looked set to escalate into all-out war when the plaintiff suggested a ban on the importing and exporting of iPads in China. The latest on the situation may serve to calm fears in Cupertino however, with the news that such a move may not be easy to execute according to Reuters.

A full ban on the iPad would obviously prove disastrous for Apple, with the device being manufactured in China. A ban on exporting the tablet would effectively shut iPad sales down across the globe.

Thankfully for us, though not so much for Proview, Chinese customs authorities are erring on the side of caution, suggesting that a ban may be too difficult to enforce due to Apple’s huge popularity…(...)

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 09:00 AM PST

Don’t you hate it when it’s late at night, and you forget to turn on silent mode before plugging your iPhone in to charge? The audible alert that results seems loud enough to wake up the whole residence!

Sadly there’s no native way to totally disable the charging alerts, but don’t fret, the jailbreak community has your back.

Apple tells Amazon China to pull the iPad off its online store

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 07:39 AM PST

Apple has seemingly told Amazon China to pull the iPad from sale in the country, according to a report from MIC Gadget.

The news comes as Apple is in the midst of a trademark battle in the region, with display maker Proview claiming to own said trademark for use inside China. Interestingly, Proview also claims to have had no knowledge of Apple’s latest move, stating that the company had not requested Apple remove the iPad from sale in Beijing, which is where Amazon is located.

Unsurprisingly, Apple is currently refusing to comment on the situation…(...)

Why Apple won’t give the iPhone or iPad an LTE radio. Yet.

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 07:00 AM PST

Right, I’m going to come right out and say this before I go any further: I’m going to get a lot of stick for this, and the rest of the iDB team thinks that I’ve lost my mind, but I’m going to write this anyway. I don’t think the iPad or iPhone is going to get an LTE radio. At least, not yet.

Now I know this flies in the face of what we are being told by just about everyone, including a very recent article by the Wall Street Journal. The general consensus is that Apple will indeed bring an iPad 3 to market during the coming weeks, and that said iPad 3 will be the first Apple device to come packed with an LTE radio for hooking up to super-fast 4G networks.

I, however, think you’re all wrong. Here’s why…(...)
