Well, by advertise I meant that it wasn't mentioned, not literally advertised. It may be common knowledge among those who already have Apple devices, but it most certainly has nothing to do with common sense. Common sense would dictate the iPad has usb ports, which other tablets have. And as far as I know, don't require a person have another PC.

Even with iOS 5, if you want to transfer music, photos, etc. You need iTunes. The iCloud's storage is limited unless you want to pay for it.

We recently purchased an iPad when my wife's laptop died. You may recall the thread. Until we upgraded to iOS 5, it had to be synched to her iPhone via a computer with iTunes. Now that we've upgraded both her iPhone and iPad, they sync without the computer and she has had no need of an additional computer. That may be the case with the new iPod Touch.
By the way, we read a great deal about the iPad on the Apple store site and in user reviews. I talked to a lot of people who have iPads and love them. It wasn't until I unpacked the iPad that I found out you couldn't even use it until you connected it to a computer with iTunes. Apple sure didn't advertise it, and none of the people mentioned it.

Hi Sue
The advertisements that I see today tell me that the only thing that you need to operate a new iPod Touch is the iPod Touch and a Wi-Fi connection.
(And maybe your Wi-Fi connection could be at Starbucks or standing out in front of an Apple Store)
Maybe buying one as your only digital device would not be a waste of money.
From time to time I think about abandoning my PC and living with my iPod Touch as my only computer. It is a poor tool for the Internet but better than nothing.

Hilarious statement, since everyone reading this is using a computer of
one sort or another.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me. My daughter and I got it figured out last night. :)

I then put a file from my computer on the IPod, but I can't seem to find it on the IPod. Do I need some kind of special (reader type) of software to do this?

RV Park iPad User Grp. and Upgrade

Thank you for all the helpful replies to my question "How to upgrade to iOS
5 w/o a computer. Yes, going to the Apple Store and making an appointment
with a Genius are good suggestions, but loosing all data sucks. I remember
when I wanted to upgrade my iTouch but my backup utility had been
corrupted. It took several Genius appointments to finally get it "fixed".
Now I'm wondering if using DropBox and uploading data before the upgrade
would help those folks w/o a computer. Our next iPad users group meeting is
Wed. 2/22 and I'd like to give our iPad 1 and 2 users advise on what best
to do.
BTW, At our first meeting last week we had 18 attending and quite a few
were out of the park travelling. Most in the group are stuck in 1st gear
and I'd like them to get them up to speed, maybe into 2nd gear. In our
Friendship Hall (Park Community) Hall we have a cinema video projection
system and I show and tell with the help of a giant screen and my iPad
connected to a $6,0000 projector.
