Re: Time Machine Lion - accessing user prefs?

Howdy.

Also try the following.

In Lion, you can display your User/Library permanently. Press Option
key while clicking the Go menu on the Finder menu bar. You should see
Library appear when you press Option (and disappear when you let go of
Option).

Select Library and it should open as a visible folder. With it open,
you can drag the small window icon from the Title menu/Toolbar at top
of Library window to your Sidebar. It will then stay in the Sidebar.
A click opens it from now on.

There is a helpful graphic in MacSupportCenterl group (log in with your
web browser), in the Photos section, that shows parts of a Finder
window, labels them, including the small blue folder I'm referring to.

Now the Time Machine trick. Select Library in Sidebar (one click
only).

Then launch Time Machine.app. It helps to have Time Machine.app in
your Dock to do this easily. Some folks remove it. If removed, drag
it back to Dock.

With the item pre selected that you want to restore, in this case
Library, you launch Time Machine and it automatically goes to that item
in the backup. You can then wayback to the version you want.

If you select a sub folder in Library first, same thing happens and
Time Machine does a short cut to the item you want to restore.

Good luck.

Thanks Dan. I'd already had my various libraries in the sidebar. This trick worked as described.

Tip: Repair without your Install Disks

Posted by: "Tod Hopkins" hoplist@hillmanncarr.com   todhop

You don't need Installation disks to "repair" your system drive. Booting into "Safe Mode" includes an automatic Disk Utility "repair" of the system drive.

To boot into Safe Mode:

Hold the Shift key immediately after the boot tone.
Keep holding until you see the progress indicator line (not the spinning icon).
When you see the Log In window, the words "Safe Mode" show in red under the Mac OS X logo at the top.
Finish the Safe Mode login, then restart.

System is "repaired." You can run the a Disk Utility "Verify" to be certain.

Tip:  Clear lots of space!

Posted by: "Tod Hopkins" hoplist@hillmanncarr.com   todhop

Running short on space? Your various "caches" may be taking up a lot of space. Your mileage may very, but I just did this on a machine not recently cleaned and cleared 300GB, reducing the space used by 60%.

These instructions use the utility "Onyx" but there are others that do the same things.

In Onyx, under the "Cleaning" tab, you will see many, many caches that can be cleared.

Step through all of them and clear everything selected by default except "Logs" and "Misc" unless you wish to clear these as well.
Now go to Maintenance... Scripts... and run all the scripts.
Then Utilities... Trash... and "delete" the trash.

Do this for EACH user. You do not need to repeat the clearing of "System" caches, but you do need to repeat the "User" and "Internet" and Trash clearing for each user.

Yes, some things will run slightly slower for a short time as caches are rebuilt, and you might lose a convenience setting or two, but nothing consequential.

Cheers,

The default state on modern Macs is to save a Sleep Image of RAM to the hard drive. If you have not turned off "hibernate" mode, this sleep image -- 8 GB if you have 8 GB of RAM -- will be re-created almost immediately.

Is this something performed by a maintenance utility (if so, which?),
or a task best done manually (if so, how?)?

Installing software for use without disc

Some software seems to insist on loading in such a way that you have to use the disc each time you want to use the software. Is there a way to install the software so it is completely on the computer?

Yes, but it's not easy. Generally this is a deliberate form of copy protection. It is most common with games. It's not a performance issue. The game is almost always entirely installed on your hard drive. Often you can remove the disc once the game has started as many games only check on startup. This is not always true, but you'll find out quickly.

Bypassing this protection involves tricking the game into believing the disc is present when it is not. It generally involves "illicit" software. There's plenty of info on the web. Just be careful as the kinds of sites that specialize in such information also tend to be a bit less trustworthy.

Howdy.

I suspect you need to learn to either install software correctly, or,
need to learn about using disk image files.

But some programs, almost always games, require that the original
optical disc be inserted before they can work. There is a good
workaround for this.

If the disc has an installer on it, it probably installs the software
correctly in the main Applications folder and that's where programs
should be put.

Some software downloads and some software discs will have a disk image
file on it.

Disk Image File info.

A Disk Image File ends in the extension .dmg.

Disk Image Files have been around for a long long time on Macintosh.

You can make your own Disk Image File using Disk Utility.

A Disk Image File is a way to trick the computer. The Disk Image File
(see number 1 below) is just a file but it's sort of a special one.
When you double-click the Disk Image File it produces a 2nd file that
tricks the computer into thinking you have actually inserted a real
disk or disc. It's a great and convenient trick.

A dmg file has 2 parts and the name are confusing.

1) Disk Image File. a main part, this is what you download, or, what
might be on a disc. File extension ends in .dmg.
2) Disk Image. a sort of sub part that only appears when the disk
image file is double-clicked. This 2nd part often looks like a white
rectangular disk icon for a disk that has been inserted (but it can
also have a custom icon).

You install from the 2nd part, from the Disk Image. Might be by
dragging a program from the disk image (the white thing) to the
Applications folder, could be from an installer on the disk image (the
white 2nd part thing).

DO NOT run the program from the Disk Image. It will go away when you
eject the Disk Image.

When you are finished installing you "Eject" the 2nd part, the white
Disk Image. It dismounts and goes away but of course no disc comes
out. The first part, the Disk Image remains.

Note on games that need an installer disc to run. Use Disk Utility and
make a Disk Image File of the original disc. Instructions for doing
this are part of Disk Utility help. Then, before launching the game
application, double-click the disk image file and let it mount that 2nd
part, the Disk Image. Then launch the game and the game things the
original disc has been inserted. I do this with Sim City so I don't
have to insert the DVD.

Good luck.

Kind of a holdover from the time when disks were in the low megabyte
ranges and a CD held so much more. Try simply copying everything from
the CD to a folder on your drive. If that does not work then make a
disk image of the CD and mount it as needed.

Not free, by any means, but if you already own InDesign, the Data Merge
feature can be used with comma-separated files exported from whatever
application holds your data. It's not perfect about adjusting for missing
data fields, though.

Howdy.

This is overkill for labels, of course, but it works.

I use Adobe Illustrator to print single shipping labels.

I've created an Illustrator document with a standard Avery label format
as a single page document.

This lets me print one label today, a different one next week, and
another one next month.

The Illustrator guidelines show the boundaries of each label.

I can then print a single label and then save the Illustrator document
so that the next time I open the document it shows the position of the
last printed label and I just move the FROM and TO parts to the next
label. This way I can print single labels from, for example, a six
label per page sheet and run it through the printer 6 times to print 6
different labels.

This could be done with any word processor or layout or graphics
program but probably easier with something similar to Illustrator
rather than Photoshop. I'd guess you could do this with Excel with a
bit of work.

just an addition to Todd's and your posts: I have heard about Eudora for

Seems Qualcomm is NOT out of business, and altho' they may well have

not totally true!

Keith, I wish! But Denver Dan is correct. Eudora is indeed an orphan
application. For support I still can go to the Eudora-Mac discussion
list, with some members very knowledgeable of Eudora's workings. And
members there keep checking out and reporting on Eudora wannabes and
possible alternatives, but they're not Eudora except perhaps in name.
Eventually I'll probably switch to Apple's Mail. But I'll be giving
up some features of Eudora that are very important to me (e.g., being
able to easily edit received and sent messages with no workarounds,
which Dan's Gyazmail can't do).

Eudora is the only email program I've ever used, and I'm hoping to
stay with Snow Leopard and Eudora for a long time. At my age (70), I
get to be set in my ways. ;-)

Howdy.

Qualcomm is not out of business.

But Qualcomm discontinued Eudora development 6 years ago.

Qualcomm bought Eudora from the folks who original created it which I
think was involved with the University of Illinois. The original
programmer went to Qualcomm.

There have been two efforts to recreate a sort of Eudora as a
commercial product and as an open source product. Both efforts have
resulted in what can easily and accurately be called, at least in my
humble opinion, crapola.

The real Eudora was a great program. I owned and used it for years and
regretfully had to give it up.

However, Eudora required Rosetta and Rosetta is not included in Mac OS
X 10.7 Lion so it's bye bye Eudora.

I have a soft spot for corporations that support the performing arts.
A number of years ago Qualcomm (based in San Diego) donated one million
dollars to the broke San Diego Symphony and saved it. Why didn't they
donate Eudora to the San Diego Symphony and have them continue
development???

Question on Mail Filters - Rule not working consistently

Posted by: "Jay Abraham" jaygroups@abrahamgroup.net   kerala01212001

Hi all,

I've set up filters for Mail so that all Mail that doesn't come from people who are in my Address book, or some specific domains are automatically sent to the Junk Mail folder.

Recently, I've been receiving a number of spam messages that are somehow bypassing the Mail Rule and ending up in my inbox. On the other hand, the Rule isn't completely broken a lot of messages are still being sent to the Junk Mail folder.

Is there some preference file I need to trash so that the Rule works all the time or is this some new Junk Mail trick that is circumventing the rule?

Thanks

Schedule regular Onyx execution?

I've run Onyx a few times, and I plan to do so regularly. I'd like it
to run on a schedule when I'm sleeping, but I don't see how to do
that.

There is a pane at the top of the Onyx window called "Automation",
but it has only an "Execute" button at the bottom for running it
"right now"; no apparent ability for future scheduling.

Can Onyx be scheduled for regular execution? Or can it only be
manually initiated?

Is there a similar utility that can be scheduled?

Thanks,
