24U FM Bench has been updated to version 1.0.1 to address initial difficulties with registering the product. Updating to version 1.0.1 is highly recommended to all customers who bought FM Bench before February 9 and downloaded the previous version. Updating an already deployed copy of 24U FM Bench is possible by simply replacing the older FMBench Analyzer file with the updated version.

The new FM Bench website focuses on helping FM Bench customers with their optimizations. The How-To Guides section currently provides a list of videos explaining how to efficiently optimize FileMaker solutions using the tools included in the FM Bench package but more videos and articles are going to be added over time to address popular questions and common difficulties.

For most people lining up outside the Chicago Apple store in April of 2010, the iPad was merely the latest, must-have techno gadget. But for Spinlight Studio, it was a chance to reinvent the future. And that's exactly what they did, developing a slew of Top-100 apps for the education market, including AlphaTots, TallyTots and the popular spy-themed math app - Operation Math. And now, the small, four-person advertising team is quickly becoming a household name in early childhood app development.

Champaign, Illinois - On April 3, 2010, Matt and Candace Hutton, Chris Phillips and John Turner stood outside of the gleaming Apple store on Michigan Avenue like hundreds of others, impatiently waiting for the tablet revolution to begin. But little did they know as they exited the store on a hazy day in Chicago that they were holding more than iPads. They were holding their future in their hands.

"When you're a small shop, you have to be adapt to new technology," says Hutton, partner and creative director for Spinlight Studio, who together with his wife and two business partners represent the entire staff of the small advertising agency based in Champaign, Illinois. "Since we first touched the screen, we wanted to try our hand at app development for the iPad," says Phillips, partner and senior designer. "The recession just provided the motivation." So, with traditional print advertising in decline, the company began applying the same design skills they'd honed over a decade in print and web design to apps, focusing on the education market as a potential revenue stream.

Within a year, the company had six titles for the iPad - Swapsies, TallyTots, AlphaTots, TableTots, Yodel-Oh! and Operation Math. And just about every one of them received major attention from Apple. From What's Hot to Staff Favorites, Apple plugged the company's apps throughout the iTunes AppStore. Two apps made it into two separate Apple Education Spotlight emails, while three were enshrined in special collections within the iTunes store, leading to a major spike in sales.

"There's nothing like the rush that comes from watching an app you had a hand in pass titles from big names like Disney and Oprah," says Turner, partner and senior copywriter. And for Spinlight, that's already happened twice. On March 19, 2011, TallyTots shot onto the daily Top 100 list of all apps selling on the iPad, reaching 80 overall. And two months later, AlphaTots did even better, reaching no. 45.

"Right now, only a few companies are really enjoying success on the level of someone like Angry Birds," says Hutton. "But when you consider that there are over 500,000 third-party apps available in the iTunes store, we've done really well." From AppTudes to Babble.com, Spinlight apps have made the short list of recommended kids apps on a wide range of review sites, as well as 13 different Top 100 iTunes lists in 58 countries around the world. And now, the company is aiming higher, releasing apps that appeal to a slightly older demographic.

"Operation Math could very well become our biggest title yet," says Hutton. The spy-based math game for kids 5-12 has only been out since December, but Apple has already thrust it squarely into the spotlight, giving it a three-week banner promotion in education. "With so many new developers jumping on the bandwagon, the scene is getting pretty crowed. But there's always room for intuitive, well-designed apps that reward kids for learning. And over the next few years, we're hoping you'll see a lot of those titles from us."

Vocab Battle and Number Battle are both based around the same slapstick concept: players upload their photographs, then compete to earn the right to attack each others' faces using a library of silly stick-on body parts and accessories.

The comic-style stickers include funny noses, crazy hair, oversized glasses, silly hats and sound effect captions. Effective with today's update, both games now include nearly 250 stickers for free! Although Vocab Battle and Number Battle are designed to provide farcical entertainment by making your opponent look ridiculous, they are built upon educational material and can be used as a fun learning tool.

Vocab Battle features more than 5,000 questions based on English SAT vocabulary words and definitions, as well as thousands of foreign language words to assist study of French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Portuguese and Japanese. Users range from high school students practicing for exams to travelers trying to brush up on their vocab before a trip.

Number Battle is a quick-fire test of mental arithmetic, with a choice of addition and subtraction or multiplication and division, and three difficulty levels for each. The game is suitable for young children but can still provide a challenge to grown ups.

"We'd heard from players that the old system was confusing and off-putting, so we listened", said Lightwood's Chris Newman. "This new way makes these games more accessible. We know there's nothing else like them and we want as many people as possible to enjoy stickering their friends - while subconsciously learning Spanish at the same time!".

Pricing and Availability:
Number Battle and Vocab Battle are universal apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Both apps are free downloads, available on the App Store. They include free sample games with full functionality and all the stickers, but limited to a small number of questions in each subject. Today's update introduces a single $1.99 (GBP 1.49) in-app purchase that unlocks the full game content, replacing the previous system of requiring an in-app purchases for each individual subject.

Spirits is a first-class citizen on the Mac. Rather than simply porting it over pixel-for-pixel from iOS, all 42 levels have been completely redrawn by hand. The game supports any resolution natively up to 25601440 pixels, making it look stunning both on a 11" MacBook Air and a 27" iMac alike. The controls offer multi-touch trackpad support for zooming, scrolling and panning.

The Mac version also lets players take screenshots of their own creative solutions and share it on Twitter. As on iOS, there are online ranks for each individual level and a global game rank. The idea for muser came to designer and developer Dan Barrio while he was enrolled in a year long sketch comedy writing program at The Second City Los Angeles Training Center. "During the program, we would use a lot of improv games and techniques to free associate story ideas. I thought it would be fun to have an App that created a similar experience where you had to justify how these random elements might fit together as a story." says Dan Barrio.

The 350 photographs have been selected from 6 different photographers around the world to provide an interesting mix of places, objects and scenarios. The 8 categories of idea cards have 100 different variations each and can be a simple as a single word, a short phrase or the beginning of a line. They are designed to get the writer thinking about character, conflict and plot in surprising and indirect ways.
