You are in that country where they add extra letters to words such as
color and honor and where spellings get changed in other ways such as
tyre for tire and centre for center, so maybe it is different there.
Here, as I understand it, Apple is giving out free copies of 10.6
Snow Leopard so people can upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion, when the
latter comes out. The Catch-22 (and such a catch can be a real
heller) is that the upgrade is available from only the App Store, and
you need Snow Leopard to access the App Store.
And, teasing you from before, according to Psalm 92:12 the righteous
will flourish like the palm tree, not the other way around :-) Tsadik

Dear Barry,
I am indeed from the country that spells colour and honour differently
but may I remind you that English started here. And by the way it is"

On a serious note, I have been told that some of my current
applications will not work with the upgraded system.

Old computers are like old dogs. A 12-year-old dog is old. A 12-year-old computer is old.
Computer years are just about like dog years.
I "inherited" a lap-top (titanium case) that must have dated back to about 2000. It runs—I was able to update the OS to about 10.2 (Cheetah, I think.) It will run Sys 9.1.
But what is it good for? The titanium case is novel. This thing is probably worth more as an antique. Interestingly, the battery is removable from the bottom of the case. Amazing!
In dog years, I am now 972.

Actually, some of the words are from Latin, such

Seriously, there are always applications that
will not work with newer systems. 10.5 for
PowerPC Macs lost the ability to run the Classic
Environment (It was already lost for Intel Macs
when they came out, at first with 10.4) and 10.7
Lion loses Rosetta, so you can't run applications
that require it as they are written in PPC code.
I still use Eudora and AppleWorks, so I am still
running 10.6. Eventually I know I will switch
over, but am not in any real hurry yet to do so.

Well, speaking as someone who's entirely laptop-based and passes older computers on to the kids, I'd love to have an *extra* older computer lying around. I'd really like to have the ability to take my laptop with me while another computer manages the uploading of my SuperDuper! backup to an online backup service. Other than that, dunno.

I found a Mac Mini on eBay.
The specs are:
1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
1 GB of memory
08/2007
Snow Leopard
I hope I didn't go too old and too small, but it was all I could afford.
Now the barrage of questions because my 12 yr old G4 was my first Mac and it was brand new.
1. I plan to keep my old G4 and give it to my 10 yr old son. How do I get what files I need off it and on my "new" Mac?
2. Do I need to upgrade my OS?
3. I have 14 days to return it. It seems fine except the remote is missing. What should I check for?
I just went from the Flintstones to the Jetsons! Thanks for any help!

Hi Carrie;
Take a look at this app, Mactracker: http://mactracker.ca/
Shows information for just about every Mac ever made. (including the one you just bought.
It looks like Lion will work if you need (or decide) to upgrade, but you'll probably have to add RAM. It will take up to 3 gig (2+1)

You can connect them via Ethernet or Firewire. Look in "Help" for instructions.
Keep it running 24/7 and use it a lot doing a lot of different things.

I think it will only upgrade to 2 gig. I wonder how long I can run without Lion.
I will check mactracker to find out about my new Mac. I'm so excited.
Thanks!

Howdy.
Congratulations on the Mac Mini. My personal opinion is that it may be
a bit slow but I think that's OK. I think this Mac Mini model was
first introduced in August 2007 and discontinued in March 2009. That
means it's 5 years old already.
What it DOES need, however, is more RAM (Memory). 1 GB just ain't
enough these days.
This model Mac Mini can have up to 3 GB of RAM installed. So max out
the RAM to be a happier computer user.
You can install Lion on this Mac. Lion costs $29.95 as a download.
Ask some questions here before doing that. And you can read back and
search previous messages (use your web browser to log into the group)
and search for message topics about installing Lion.
Good luck.

Thanks!
Remember, slow is a relative term. I just unplugged my 400 Mhz processor G4.
I hope RAM isn't hard to install. It's so TINY :)
I will look into more memory and upgrading the OS after I get my files off the old Mac.
Thank! :)

Remember, slow is a relative term. I just unplugged my 400 Mhz processor G4.
I hope RAM isn't hard to install. It's so TINY :)
I will look into more memory and upgrading the OS after I get my files off the old Mac.
Thank! :)

Howdy.
I have a question that may help some friends at a Washington, D.C., not
for profit. They are all Macintosh based, with a server and about 70
Mac users in their DC offices.
They are changing to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion from Snow Leopard. Only a
couple of people have so far changed from Snow Leopard to Lion.
A major problem is happening for one of the new Lion users with his
Calendars and with iCloud.
He is getting an error when trying to sync calendars.
Here is the error:
"iCal couldn't move your calendars to iCloud because an error occurred.
Make sure you're connnected to the Internet and then try again."
and then . . .
"The server responded with an error. The request for account "iCloud"
failed.
The server responded with "509" to operation
CalDAVMigrateToServerQueueableOperation."
And, here is a link to an Apple Support Community thread on this
problem:
<https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404139?start=0&tstart=0 >
It keeps trying to connect and sync, error keeps happening, and his
calendars are constantly duplicating, duplicating, duplicating. So
often he can't keep up with deleting the duplications.
This guy isn't the only person to experience this problem.
Does anyone have suggestions for a fix, solution?
